FFXIV Samurai Build Guide 7.55: BiS, Rotation

Here is the only fact that matters: Samurai is a katana wielding melee DPS with zero raid buffs and zero excuses, a job that shares Striking gear with Monk and runs on Strength. If your ffxiv samurai bis search led you here, congratulations, you can stop scrolling forum threads from 2022 written by people guessing at stat weights with a straight face.

Stat Priority (Read This Before You Waste a Materia)

The current samurai stat priority is Skill Speed to a tier, then Critical Hit, then Determination, roughly equal to or ahead of Direct Hit. Weapon Damage and your Main Stat, Strength, outrank everything else by default since they come baked into gear rather than melds, so stop trying to meld around them.

StatPriority RankNotes
Weapon Damage1Comes from gear, not choices, so relax
Strength2Your Main Stat, non negotiable
Skill Speed3Melded to a specific GCD tier, not stacked blindly
Critical Hit4Best pure damage stat after tiering Skill Speed
Determination5Kept roughly even with Direct Hit
Direct Hit5Same tier as Determination, don't overthink it

Materia Melds

Your samurai materia melds should follow the table above, tiering Skill Speed first and dumping the rest into Critical Hit. Melding pure Determination on everything because it "feels safe" is how mediocre parses are born.

  • Meld Skill Speed materia until you land on a recognized GCD tier and never a single point past it.
  • Fill every remaining slot with Critical Hit materia unless your current gear already overshoots the tier, in which case shift into Determination.
  • Use grade appropriate materia for your current item level instead of hoarding tier six materia like it's a retirement fund.

Job Gauge, Explained For The Impatient

The samurai job gauge is really three gauges wearing a trenchcoat: Sen, Kenki, and Meditation. Sen accumulates from combos and gets spent on Iaijutsu, where one Sen gives Higanbana, two gives Tenka Goken, and three gives Midare Setsugekka. Kenki builds from weaponskills and positional hits, then gets dumped into Hissatsu: Shinten, Gyoten, or Guren so it never sits there capped doing nothing for you. Meditation stacks from Iaijutsu, Meditate, or Ogi Namikiri, and three stacks unlock Shoha, which you should never let rot unspent.

Trait Overview

The relevant samurai trait guide in one paragraph: Kenki Mastery unlocks the Kenki Gauge from combo finishers, Kenki Mastery II extends that generation to nearly every weaponskill, and Iaijutsu Mastery scales your Iaijutsu damage as you level. None of these are optional or skippable, they just arrive as you level and quietly reshape your rotation.

If you are still holding Shoha at three stacks "just in case," you are not saving it, you are deleting the potency it represents, and no amount of hoarding will earn you a trophy.

Rotation

The core loop for a solid samurai rotation guide is three weaponskill combos rotating to build Sen while keeping Jinpu and Fugetsu buffs alive, spending Sen on Iaijutsu whenever three stacks are ready, and dumping Kenki into Hissatsu abilities so nothing overcaps. Every 120 seconds you unload Ikishoten into Ogi Namikiri and Kaeshi: Namikiri for the real burst, with a smaller version landing every 60 seconds through Meikyo Shisui charges.

  • Keep the DoT from Higanbana refreshed near its expiration rather than clipping it early out of nervousness.
  • Alternate between the Gekko and Kasha combo finishers to maintain both positional buffs without gaps.
  • Spend Kenki on Shinten whenever it climbs above roughly forty rather than letting it sit there uselessly.
  • Use Tsubame gaeshi immediately after Tenka Goken or Midare Setsugekka before pressing anything else, since any other action resets it.

Opener (7.55)

A clean samurai opener 7.55 looks like this, assuming full party buffs align at pull.

Step

Action

1

Meikyo Shisui pre pull for a free combo skip

2

Hakaze into Jinpu into Gekko

3

Hakaze into Shifu into Kasha

4

Ikishoten, then Ogi Namikiri, then Kaeshi Namikiri

5

Third Sen combo into Midare Setsugekka for the DoT and burst nuke

6

Weave Hissatsu: Senei, Guren, and Shinten throughout without capping Kenki

Best in Slot Snapshot

A best samurai build ffxiv setup right now generally points toward the current tier's raid gear over crafted pieces once you clear a couple of fights, since crafted and tome gear exist mainly to bridge the gap while you farm drops.

Slot

Source

Priority

Weapon

Raid drop or current relic

Highest impact slot, chase it first

Weapon Alternative

Tome weapon

Fine bridge gear, not a long term goal

Accessories

Tome or raid

Melded to Skill Speed tier then Critical Hit

Armor

Raid drop preferred

Crafted works early, replace as you clear

Relic Weapon

The current samurai relic weapon track runs through Phantom Weapons tied to Occult Crescent content rather than the older Manderville questline, meaning you earn and upgrade it by actually playing the new zone instead of buying your way through tomestones alone. Treat it as a solid glamour and stat stick, not a mandatory grind that should consume your entire week.

None of this is complicated, it just requires you to actually press your Kenki spenders instead of admiring your Sen gauge. Follow the stat priority, respect the opener, and stop overcapping Meditation like it's a trophy case.
