FFXIV Dragoon Guide 7.55: BiS, Rotation, Stats

This FFXIV Dragoon guide exists because the text you handed me had a job gauge, a trait and a prayer, and nothing else. Dragoon in 7.55 is a melee DPS built around Life of the Dragon, a burst phase that hands you fifteen percent more damage and unlocks Nastrond, Stardiver and Starcross for twenty seconds. Skip that window and you are just a man with a spear poking the air.

FFXIV Boosting Services

The single fact that decides whether your gear is good or garbage: Weapon Damage and Strength outweigh every secondary stat you own, so stop obsessing over melds before your gear pieces are even upgraded. Everything below, the Dragoon stat priority, the Dragoon materia melds, the Dragoon BiS list, the opener and the job gauge, exists to squeeze the last drops out of a job that punishes hesitation.

Job Gauge

The Dragoon job gauge has two halves and neither forgives laziness. Blood of the Dragon upgrades into Life of the Dragon at level 70, granting three stacks that each authorize one Nastrond during the twenty second window, and Stardiver plus Starcross ride along once each. The second half, Firstminds' Focus, fills by one stack per successful Raiden Thrust or Draconian Fury, caps at two, and once full lets you fire Wyrmwind Thrust, a straight line attack that hits for 370 potency on the first target and half that on everything behind it.

Firstminds' FocusRaiden Thrust or Draconian FuryWyrmwind Thrust at 2 stacks
Do not hold Geirskogul to line it up with something prettier. It shares its sixty second cooldown with Lance Charge, so delaying it just delays your entire burst profile and every raid lead will silently judge you for it.

Trait

The relevant Dragoon trait, Enhanced Life of the Dragon, is the reason the job feels different from earlier expansions. It pushes Geirskogul to 280 potency and Nastrond to 720, and it is the trait responsible for the Firstminds' Focus mechanic existing at all. At level 64 the old awkward Fang and Claw and Wheeling Thrust naming nonsense disappears and Drakesbane simply becomes the fifth hit of both combos, permanently, no conditions attached.

Stat Priority

Your Dragoon stat priority is not a matter of opinion, it is arithmetic. Determination and Direct Hit scale in a straight line, Critical Hit scales quadratically so it rewards you twice for every point, and Skill Speed scales worse than all three, which is why you avoid it whenever the gear lets you.

PriorityStatNote
1Weapon Damage / StrengthAlways take the higher item level piece first
2Critical HitQuadratic scaling, the greedy stat
3Direct HitLinear but efficient
4DeterminationLinear, solid filler
5Skill SpeedAvoid unless forced by gear tiering

For consumables, use the highest tier Gemdraught of Strength available and food that pushes Critical Hit or Direct Hit, since your Dragoon materia melds should reinforce whichever secondary stat tier you are closest to breaking, not whichever one looks nicest on paper.

Best in Slot Gear

Tomestone purchases for Dragoon BiS follow a fixed order because Square Enix enjoys rationing your patience. Prioritize Helmet first, then Legs, then Gloves, Necklace and Ring in whichever order your currency allows, since raid tier pieces you cannot yet farm will slot in as they drop.

  • Buy the tomestone helmet before anything else because it carries the largest substat gain per upgrade.
  • Take tomestone legs second since they close the gap fastest for a fresh character.
  • Fill gloves, necklace and ring in any order once the first two pieces are secured.
  • Replace tomestone accessories with raid drops the moment they clear your current item level.

Relic Weapon

The current Dragoon relic weapon line is worth building only after your core gear is settled, since a fresh relic without melds is a worse weapon than a raid drop with proper substats. Once fully upgraded and melded it competes with or beats savage tier weapons, so treat it as an endgame side project, not a shortcut to skip raiding.

Opener

The Dragoon opener is long, unforgiving and identical every single pull, which is the entire point of practicing it until your fingers do it without your brain's permission.

Rotation 7.55

The Dragoon rotation 7.55 runs on a ten GCD loop alternating Chaotic Spring and Heavens' Thrust finishers, with every off global ability pressed the instant it comes off cooldown.

  • Use Geirskogul the moment it is available since delaying it delays Life of the Dragon and every buff attached to it.
  • Weave Wyrmwind Thrust after your second Raiden Thrust or Draconian Fury each cycle, shifting slightly later only to catch a buff window.
  • Save Life Surge for Heavens' Thrust or Drakesbane and prioritize landing it during Lance Charge or Battle Litany.
  • Fire Mirage Dive within fifteen seconds of it becoming available or lose the charge entirely.
  • Press Lance Charge and Battle Litany on cooldown after the opener and position so the whole party benefits from Litany.

For the best Dragoon build overall, every minute lines up Lance Charge and Geirskogul together for a combined twenty six and a half percent damage buff, with Battle Litany stacking on top every second minute for the real burst spike.

AoE Rotation

Against three or more targets, swap to Doom Spike into Sonic Thrust, then finish with the AoE combo tail, refreshing Draconian Fury whenever it is up since it feeds the same gauge as single target Raiden Thrust.

Final Word

None of this matters if you cannot execute the opener consistently, so record a parse, count your Geirskogul timings and stop blaming the healer for your damage numbers.
