FFXIV Monk Guide 7.55: BiS, Rotation, Opener, Stats

This ffxiv monk guide covers everything a fist-fighting masochist needs for patch 7.55: stat priority is Crit, then Direct Hit, then Determination, with Skill Speed dead last unless you hit the 955 breakpoint for a 1.94 GCD. Monk remains a melee DPS built around generating Nadi and detonating them into Phantom Rush, so if you enjoyed math homework, you're home.

Monk's identity in Dawntrail is simple on paper and miserable in practice. You build a solar Nadi and a lunar Nadi through your Forms, then spend both on a Blitz. Get this wrong and you lose an entire Phantom Rush, which is the single biggest self-inflicted DPS wound a Monk can create. The monk rotation hasn't changed its bones since 7.0, it's just been tuned, so old habits mostly still apply.

Opener and Rotation

The monk opener exists in three flavors, and picking wrong for your kill time is how you throw a Phantom Rush into the void. Solar Lunar is the safe, default choice that maximizes total Phantom Rush count across most fight lengths. Double Lunar and Triple Lunar shift the cycle so your odd windows carry Rising Phoenix instead of nothing, but they only pay off at specific kill times.

StepAction
1Buffs, pre-pull Forms into Bootshine
2Dragon Kick, Perfect Balance
3Twin Snakes, Demolish
4Riddle of Fire, Brotherhood
5Snap Punch into Nadi generation
6Spend Nadi on first Blitz
Monk punishes bad kill-time planning harder than almost any other job. If you don't know your kill time, don't bother theorycrafting your opener, just play Solar Lunar and stop pretending you're a parser.

AoE is simpler than it looks but the thresholds are annoying. Shadow of the Destroyer is always worth it on three targets. Four-point Fury only earns its keep on four. Rockbreaker needs an obscene amount of Critical Hit, around 5035, to beat single-target on three targets, which basically never happens, so treat it as a four-target-only tool.

Job Gauge

The chakra gauge stacks up to five and dumps into either a single-target or AoE oGCD, which is the least confusing part of the entire kit. Layered on top is the Nadi gauge, tracking Solar and Lunar Nadi separately, plus a Beast Chakra counter feeding your Blitz. Once both a Solar and a Lunar Nadi are banked, spend them immediately on a Blitz, sitting on them accomplishes nothing and only risks an overcap.

Traits

Level 100 traits mostly boost potency and unlock the full Blitz suite, including access to phantom rush as the strongest hit in the kit once both Nadi types are generated. Nothing here requires a choice, traits just arrive and you take them, unlike your life decisions.

Stat Priority and Materia

Weapon Damage and Strength beat every substat combined, so stop obsessing over minor materia swaps before your gear itself is upgraded. After that, monk stat priority runs Crit, Direct Hit, Determination, with Skill Speed only mattering at the 955 breakpoint for a clean 1.94 GCD, or 1083 if you're chasing 1.93.

2

3

5

Skill Speed (breakpoints only)

Monk materia melding follows the same order as the stat table above, no surprises, no secret tech. Melding Skill Speed past your breakpoint is a pure loss, since Monk has no burst window that scales with extra GCDs the way some casters do.

Best in Slot Gear

Monk bis 7.55 combines current tier savage raid drops with augmented tomestone gear, and item level is king when leveling, so grab whatever's highest before agonizing over substats. Endgame sets vary by fight and by whether a clean 2.00 GCD is even available that tier, so check current sim tools before committing materia.

Relic Weapon

The monk relic weapon for Dawntrail is the Phantom Weapon, unlocked through Occult Crescent content via South Horn and North Horn. Once fully upgraded it becomes best-in-slot by expansion's end, same story as every relic weapon before it, so don't expect a shortcut.

Play any ffxiv monk dps build competently and Monk rewards you with high sustained damage and a rotation that punishes sloppiness immediately. Get the opener wrong, drop a Nadi, or ignore your kill time, and the fight itself will remind you, loudly and repeatedly.

FFXIV Monk Guide 7.55: BiS, Rotation, Opener, Stats FAQ

What is the best stat priority for Monk in 7.55?

Weapon Damage and Strength first, then Critical Hit, Direct Hit, Determination, with Skill Speed only mattering at set breakpoints.

Which opener should Monk use?

Solar Lunar is safest for most kill times; Double or Triple Lunar only pays off at specific fight lengths.

What is Monk's relic weapon in Dawntrail?

The Phantom Weapon, obtained through Occult Crescent content via South Horn and North Horn zones.

How does the Chakra gauge work?

It stacks to five, then spends on a single-target or AoE oGCD, separate from the Nadi and Beast Chakra gauges.

Is Skill Speed worth melding on Monk?

Only enough to hit the 955 or 1083 breakpoint for a clean GCD; anything beyond that wastes materia slots.
