Square Enix revealed Bastion as the first new job for FINAL FANTASY XIV: Evercold at the Berlin Fan Fest 2026 keynote, and yes, it is a tank that turns its shield into a gun. The FFXIV Evercold Bastion job is a main tank wielding twin transforming greatshields called Skyltborg, starts at level 90 in Limsa Lominsa, and only works in the new Evolved Action Mode. No Reborn option. Adapt or sit this one out.

If you were hoping for another sword-and-board clone, tough luck. This is Final Fantasy XIV new tank design gone slightly unhinged, blending medieval plate armor with mounted firearms, because apparently shields blocking hits was getting boring after fifteen years.

Bastion hails from Aerslaent in the far reaches of the Northern Empty, a region apparently populated entirely by people who thought regular shields weren't threatening enough. Their name is a nod to Skjoldborg, the old Viking shield wall formation, because nothing says innovation like naming your gun-shield after something from a thousand years ago. The lore insists no raider's axe can pierce a Bastion's Skyltborg, and any raider who tries gets introduced to its aetherial artillery instead.

How It Actually Plays

• The Skyltborg shifts between a claw-like melee form for close combat and a barrel-loaded ranged form for mid-range punishment.
• Early combo shown in the reveal trailer includes right and left claw swings followed by a leaping gap closer.
• A finishing sequence launches the Bastion into the air before slamming Skyltborg fire into the ground beneath the enemy.
• Beyond damage, the job carries defensive and curative boons for allies, so it babysits the party while also shooting things, multitasking at its finest.

Bastion is locked to Evolved Mode with zero option to fall back on the classic Reborn layout, so if the new combat system flops, you are stuck with it until Square Enix decides otherwise.

The FFXIV Evercold expansion launches in January 2027 across PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC, and it is dragging the whole game through a redesign nobody asked for but everyone will get used to eventually. Auto Content Balancing scales dungeons and FATEs to your level automatically, and the main scenario now splits into three branching paths instead of the usual two, presumably to make you feel like your choices matter.

A crossover raid titled Beyond the Lifestream teams up with the FINAL FANTASY VII Remake team for an 8-player fight, directed alongside Naoki Hamaguchi. Expect Midgar nostalgia wrapped around ice-themed dungeon design, a combination nobody predicted and everyone will screenshot anyway.

Also announced: an Evangelion alliance raid, a Chocobo system overhaul, and a new Gold Saucer minigame, because Yoshi-P apparently cannot resist adding one more thing to an already overstuffed keynote.

Release Timeline

The Bastion main tank FFXIV reveal was only six minutes long, so most of its actual skill list and rotation remain a mystery until Tokyo Fan Fest, where the second new job, a physical ranged DPS, finally gets its turn in the spotlight. Until then, everyone gets to argue on forums about what "Evolved Mode" even means, which is apparently the real endgame content this cycle.
