FFXIV Auxesia Guide: Cosmic Exploration Before/After

Auxesia is the fourth and final planet of FFXIV Cosmic Exploration, added in Dawntrail patch 7.51. It starts as an empty forest and gets rebuilt, piece by piece, only because thousands of crafters and gatherers cannot resist a shiny progress bar. You do not build anything alone. The server builds it collectively, and you are, at best, a rounding error with a pickaxe.

Unlocking Auxesia requires a level 10 or higher Disciple of the Hand or Land and completion of the quest Memory's Orbit on the previous planet, Oizys. There is no shortcut. Square Enix designed the whole chain specifically so nobody skips ahead, and yes, someone always tries anyway.

What Is Cosmic Exploration

This Auxesia guide assumes you already know the basics, but here is the summary for the lazy. Cosmic Exploration is lifestyle content for Disciples of the Hand and Land, unlocked in Old Sharlayan through the quest "A Cosmic Homecoming," available once Endwalker's main scenario is finished. It is a direct Ishgard Restoration comparison waiting to happen: same server-wide progression, same crafting grind, same feeling of shouting into a void that occasionally answers with a house.

How Progress Actually Works

Every planet tracks development through the Infrastructure Index, called the Auxesia Development Initiative in game. Completing Stellar Missions, FATEs, and Mech Ops fills a shared bar. Once it fills, the whole server unlocks a new stage: new buildings, new areas, sometimes a new form of transport. The screen does not refresh itself. You have to walk back and check it manually, which is a genuinely dumb design choice that has not been fixed in three prior planets, so do not expect it to be fixed now.

  1. Talk to a Cosmic Exploration NPC on Oizys once its infrastructure is complete.
  2. Finish the quest Memory's Orbit, which sends you walking around with Namingway like an unpaid tour guide.
  3. Follow the game's marker to the eastern part of Oizys and trigger the final cutscene.
  4. Arrive on Auxesia and receive your starting Cosmic Prototype Coffer if you have not already claimed one.

The forests of Auxesia are initially barren, and your first fifty missions will not visibly change a single tree. That is normal. Progress here is collective and slow, so anyone expecting instant scenery upgrades should lower their expectations immediately.

Before and After: The Visible Changes

The most satisfying part of the whole system is watching a dead map turn into a functioning colony. Early Auxesia is described on the official site as "pack your pruning shears" territory, which is corporate speak for a giant unmowed forest with a single tiny camp.

Stage

Base camp

A tent and some crates

Full Cosmoport with vendors and facilities

Empty grass, marked construction zone

Rows of finished habitation modules

Towers

Dry, root covered ruins

Powered towers using living vegetation for energy

Map access

Locked eastern and northern sections

Fully explorable zone with jumping puzzles

Nobody can rewind the zone to see an earlier stage in person. The only record is the in-game report log and whatever screenshots players bothered to take, which is why this kind of before and after documentation matters more than it sounds like it should.

Key NPCs and the Namingway Questline

The Loporrits run this entire operation, and Namingway is the one who follows you across every planet. He is not just comic relief. His personal questline, tied to small delivery side quests on each world, culminates in a final scene about why names matter to a race that otherwise has none. Skip the deliveries and you will finish the main Cosmic Exploration story without ever seeing it, which is exactly as anticlimactic as it sounds.

  • Namingway travels with you and unlocks his own emotional side story through deliveries on multiple planets.
  • Searchingway runs the Cosmic Exploration Initiative and hands out the big picture speeches.
  • Drivingway shuttles you between Sinus Ardorum and whichever planet is currently active.
  • Mesouaidonque handles the credit exchange on Auxesia and every earlier zone.

Currencies: Do Not Mix Them Up

There are two economies here, and the game expects you to keep them straight without much help. Cosmocredits work across every planet and buy gear, furnishings, dyes, and high grade materia. Auxesia credits, meanwhile, only exist on Auxesia and only pay for two things.

Cosmic Fortune spins and Mech Ops tickets

Mech Ops lets you pilot a mech through short missions for solid rewards, and pilot tickets come from playing normally, so there is no separate grind required. Cosmic Fortune is a gacha wheel funded by Auxesia credits that occasionally hands out something worth the wait and usually hands out filler. Artifact Search missions dig up relics tied to the vanished civilization that once lived here, which is the closest thing this content has to actual lore payoff for gatherers.

Tips For New and Returning Players

  • Auxesia has no Sequential missions, unlike every planet before it, so plan your rotation differently.
  • Weather-restricted missions trigger on Cloudy or Clear Skies, each showing up roughly one fifth of the time.
  • FATEs on Auxesia vanish permanently once the server hits their milestone, so stop procrastinating on them.
  • Master Missions only unlock after your Cosmic Tool reaches its final stage, so finish the tool first.
  • You do not need your Cosmic Tool equipped to earn research data toward upgrading it further.

None of this content requires endgame gear or relic completion, which makes it one of the more approachable systems in current Dawntrail patches. Whether that is a compliment or an insult to your free time is entirely your problem to sort out.

FFXIV Auxesia Guide: Cosmic Exploration Before/After FAQ

What level do I need to start Auxesia?

Level 10 Disciple of the Hand or Land, plus Memory's Orbit completed on Oizys first.

Can I skip the earlier planets and go straight to Auxesia?

No. Oizys must be finished before Auxesia becomes accessible to anyone.

What's the difference between Cosmocredits and Auxesia credits?

Cosmocredits work everywhere; Auxesia credits only buy Cosmic Fortune spins and Mech Ops tickets.

Does the Infrastructure Index update automatically?

No. You must manually revisit the screen; it never refreshes on its own.

Do I need my Cosmic Tool equipped to earn research data?

No, research data accrues regardless of which job you're actively playing.
