The PoE 2 Abyssal Lich best build is here. Plants Witch tears through campaign and T14+ maps. Entangle from level 1, near-infinite Energy Shield endga
You are a Physical Spellcaster who turns plants into weapons and then hides behind a wall of Energy Shield so thick that bosses question their career choices. The PoE 2 Abyssal Lich best build starts at level 1 with Entangle and never really needs to change the game plan: which is exactly why it works.
The Abyssal Lich is a hidden ascendancy. You play as a regular Lich until T14 Maps, then unlock the upgrade by defeating the Vessel of Kulemak. Until then, the passive nodes are identical: you lose nothing.
Core damage: Entangle and Thrashing Vines plant terrain, Thunderstorm triggers Overgrown Plant explosions via Accelerated Growth. The result is a screen-wide detonation that doesn't care how many enemies GGG spawned.
Alternative physical spells: Bonestorm, Bone Cage, Detonate Dead: are available if you want to mix in extra carnage. They all scale off the same physical damage investment, so the decision is purely aesthetic.
This is where the game makes you work for it. The Abyssal Lich hidden ascendancy is not handed to you at the trials: you earn it by fighting a boss that refuses to die politely.
You cannot lose the trial. The boss retains its health between attempts. If you wipe, come back and finish the job. There is no reason to panic: just enough reason to be adequately geared before walking in.
The Abyssal version replaces Necromantic Conduit with Umbral Well, shifting the identity from minion-support to self-focused destruction. This build picks the defensive core that makes it notorious in HC.

Skill / Notable |
Description |
|
Soulless Form |
Inherent damage reduction. The reason this build doesn't die to things that should kill it. |
|
Eternal Life |
Requires Soulless Form. Doubles down on the immortality investment. |
|
Heavy Buffer |
Additional damage bypass layered onto already absurd Energy Shield. |
|
Rupture the Flesh |
Scales with Physical Damage: not Chaos. This is why Plants works with Abyssal Lich. |
|
Umbral Well |
Replaces Skeletal Minions with Umbral Souls granting stat bonuses per minion type. |
|
Crystalline Phylactery |
Jewel socket notable: 100% increased effect of socketed jewel. A free power multiplier. |
Atziri's Disdain further extends the damage bypass, stacking on top of the nodes above. In full endgame configuration, the Lich Witch build endgame tanking is legitimate: enormous Energy Shield numbers, layered bypass, inherent damage reduction. Most things simply run out of damage before you run out of shield.
The PoE 2 Witch league starter leveling path here is forgiving to an almost offensive degree. Entangle clears packs. Volcano handles single-target until Bonestorm arrives. You don't need to think very hard.
Act 1 rotation: Entangle for packs, Volcano for bosses until Bonestorm lands. After Bonestorm, single-target becomes trivial.

The Entangle Thrashing Vines PoE 2 build reaches its final form here. Thunderstorm joins the rotation as the trigger for Overgrown Plant explosions via Accelerated Growth. One cast, entire screen explodes. Efficient.
Main Damage: Entangle + Thrashing Vines plant Overgrown terrain → Thunderstorm procs Accelerated Growth → Overgrown Plants explode → everything dies.
The physical spellcaster identity also permits running Bonestorm or Bone Cage for additional single-target burst. Both scale identically with the physical investment, so there's no gear change required to swap between them.
Weapon choice: either a Bone Wand (comes with Bone Blast, scales physical) or a Voltaic Staff (Lightning Bolt, fast clear). Both work. The affixes matter more than the base type.
Get Strength early: Entangle and Volcano are Strength/Intelligence hybrid spells. One attribute node in Act 1 solves this. Don't skip it and wonder why you can't cast.

The Energy Shield build PoE 2 Witch end state combines Soulless Form + Eternal Life + Heavy Buffer + Atziri's Disdain. The result is an Energy Shield pool that absorbs damage on multiple bypass layers before anything reaches life. Enemies run out of damage. You don't.
The tree chases Physical Spell Damage, Cast Speed, and Energy Shield. The Physical Spellcaster passive tree PoE 2 pathing is straightforward: there are no clever shortcuts, just efficient nodes that multiply the two things the build does: hit hard and not die.

The Plants core doesn't restrict you as much as it looks. The Abyssal Lich build variants PoE 2 branch naturally from the same passive investments:

Trade-off |
|
Plants (Core) |
Entangle + Thrashing Vines + Thunderstorm |

Bonestorm Focus |
Bonestorm replaces Thrashing Vines for ST |

Detonate Dead |

|
Bone Cage Utility |
Bone Cage for CC-heavy content |
Defensive, lower damage ceiling |
For anyone playing the Twister Abyssal Lich PoE 2 variant (separate build by 787prada), the mechanics differ entirely: Umbral Well is used for Skeletal Sniper Projectile Acceleration III to accelerate Twister projectiles. Different ascendancy node priority, different gear. Worth researching separately if the Plants doesn't appeal to you.
The PoE 2 patch 0.5 Witch builds landscape shifted significantly when GGG adjusted Infernalist minion builds: Grim Feast gone, Hellhound gutted, scepter nerfed from +5 to +4. Lich and Abyssal Lich absorbed the displaced playerbase and are currently among the strongest choices for players who want a Witch-based character that survives maps without constant hedging.
The Plants Abyssal Lich is specifically notable because it was built and verified in Hardcore SSF: the format that immediately exposes gear-check builds. It passed. That's worth more than any damage number.

After reaching T14 Maps, defeating Abyssal Commanders for Kulemak's Invitation, then killing the Vessel of Kulemak four times.
Yes. Build author cleared HC and HCSSF as a league starter. It is one of the safest options available for those formats.
Brutality provides higher pure physical scaling. Switch to Zenith I if any item grants "damage as extra elemental": Brutality blocks that conversion.
Bone Wand with Bone Blast, or Voltaic Staff with Lightning Bolt. Affix quality matters more than base choice at that stage.
No. The boss retains health between attempts. Death is a setback, not a reset. Bring adequate gear and finish it.
