Patch 0.5 is live and the Lich is still eating. Our updated Witch Lich build guide covers every variant from league start to Abyssal endgame. Go kill
The Lich ascendancy for the Witch is the best-positioned class in Path of Exile 2 0.5 for league start. It clears the campaign fast, scales hard into endgame without unique items, and survives by stacking Energy Shield until it becomes a cockroach that cannot die. The PoE 2 Lich build rewards knowing the Chaos DoT loop. If you don't, it punishes you slowly over four seconds.
The core engine: Essence Drain applies a heavy Chaos DoT. Contagion spreads it to every enemy in the pack when one dies. The screen clears itself. For bosses, Bonestorm fires up to 20 Bone Spikes, stacks Impale, and Living Lightning consumes every stack simultaneously. Bosses dissolve. You barely needed to be there.
Dark Effigy supplements single-target as the build matures. By endgame you open with Sigil of Power, drop your Effigy totems, cast Despair, and watch the boss bar evaporate while you pace in circles.
THIS GUIDE COVERS CAMPAIGN THROUGH T15 MAPS. Transition from leveling setup to endgame between Level 70–80. The Ascendancy changes: plan accordingly.
There are three directions worth committing to. All start from the same Witch Lich league starter skeleton and diverge at endgame. Choose based on how much currency you expect to have and how much you enjoy pressing buttons.

T14+ maps unlocks Abyssal |
Tankiest build in the game. Requires Kulemak kill. |
Abyssal Lich is a hidden ascendancy unlocked by defeating Kulemak after reaching T14 Maps. Same nodes as regular Lich until the swap. Use Physical Spell scaling instead of Chaos to maximize Rupture the Flesh synergy.
The Lich ascendancy passive tree has four notable nodes. Take them in this order. Every other choice is a skill issue.
10% of damage taken bypasses Energy Shield. No inherent mana regeneration: you regen mana equal to 6% of max Life per second instead. Your life cannot change while you have Energy Shield. The core of this entire defensive setup.
Combined with Atziri's Disdain and Heavy Buffer, delivers 25%+ damage mitigation out of the gate. Pair with high ES gear and this is arguably the strongest defensive node in PoE 2 right now. Unlocks the Low Life transition that makes this build unkillable.
Sacrifice 5% of max ES per spell cast. Spells for which the sacrifice was fully made deal 30% more damage. Sacrificing does not interrupt recharge. Free damage tax. Pay it.
Socket one non-unique Basic Jewel with 100% increased effect. Scales excellently into endgame when you find a jewel with high ES and spell damage. Swap to Rupture the Soul for improved map clear if your jewel situation is bad.
Additional small passives: Dominion Over Flesh lets you apply an additional Curse and makes Curses affect Hexproof enemies. Rupture the Soul causes cursed enemies killed by you or your allies to have a 33% chance to explode for a quarter of their max Life as Chaos damage. Pack clearing suddenly gets even lazier.
With 30 Spirit early: Arctic Armour for defense (cold hit on being struck, chills attackers) or Ravenous Swarm for offense (Poison that spreads via Contagion). Take Arctic Armour unless your dodge roll is embarrassingly good.
After Ignaduk grants 60 Spirit: Temporal Chains (slows enemies, extends DoT duration: recommended) or Despair (more Chaos damage: theoretically superior, practically punishing). Use Blasphemy support for permanent aura application.
Swap Unleash into Contagion until you get Quality on it. Without Quality, one enemy is hard to reliably hit with both Contagion and Essence Drain. Unleash + Chain smooths this significantly.
The best gear for Lich Witch PoE 2 is entirely about Energy Shield. Every slot, every modifier decision flows from this. Resistances cap, then more ES.

The Essence Drain Contagion gameplay loop is deliberately simple. The skill ceiling is in positioning, not button complexity.
Use Entangle for clear. Swap Unleash into your Basic Skill for boss fights. Use Frost Bomb on cooldown if your weapon skill is Elemental-based. It is unpleasant. It ends at Level 6.
Demon Form (Infernalist Ascendancy) stacks Demonflame every second. Each stack = 3% more Spell Damage but drains Life. Counteract with Life Regeneration. The net gain is massive. Do not ignore it.
The PoE 2 Lich passive tree path prioritizes Spell Damage nodes early, then transitions to Energy Shield stacking. Allocate Physical Damage nodes in Weapon Set 1 and Chaos/Curse nodes in Weapon Set 2. The game enforces this mechanically: don't forget to configure it or your Bonestorm will do Chaos damage and your DoTs will do Physical damage. You will cry.
Damage nodes to prioritize while leveling: Potent Incantation, Lingering Horror, Void, and Dark Entries. These carry Essence Drain's DoT through the entire campaign.
The PoE 2 Lich endgame build pivots during early Atlas progression. Your goal is to upgrade all gear to high-ES bases, allocate Eternal Life as your third Ascendancy node, then execute the Low Life swap by equipping Atziri's Disdain. At that point 25%+ of incoming damage is bypassed before it even touches your ES pool.
Weapon Set Points shift: Weapon Set 1 holds Damage nodes, Weapon Set 2 holds Curse nodes. Endgame passive optimization primarily adds Jewels and Curse scaling. Aim for 10,000+ Energy Shield. It is achievable. It is not fast. The build remains functional at 6,000 ES: you just die occasionally, which is fine, this is Path of Exile.
For Abyssal Lich: defeat Kulemak after T14 Maps. The same Lich Ascendancy nodes apply until the swap. Rupture the Flesh scales off Physical Damage in this variant: adjust Bonestorm accordingly and stop investing into Chaos modifiers on gear.

Yes. ED Contagion Lich is the strongest self-found viable build in PoE 2, clearing yellow maps on campaign gear alone.
Between Level 70 and 80. Transition earlier only if your Energy Shield gear is already upgraded and resistances are capped.
Not for campaign or early maps. It becomes essential for the Low Life endgame transition. Corrupted version is better: more bypass percentage.
Hidden ascendancy unlocked post-T14 by killing Kulemak. Converts the build to Physical scaling. Tankiest option in the game. Worth it if you plan to stay.
Yes. Abyssal Lich variant with Eternal Life + Atziri's Disdain has been proven HC and HCSSF viable, described as virtually unkillable in endgame.
