Patch 0.5 "Return of the Ancients" is the largest Path of Exile 2 update since early access launched. Two new ascendancies, five endgame storylines, 21 new Kalguuran skills, the Runes of Aldur league mechanic, and a balance pass that reads like a hit list. The PoE2 0.5 league start meta is unusually readable: Grinding Gear Games decided that sustainability was a sin, and punished accordingly.
The league starts May 29. Servers will crash. That's not a prediction, that's GGG tradition. While you wait in queue, memorize this tier list. Use CRINGEBLOG promocode, and will give you every build for almost free!
DEAD ON ARRIVAL: instant leech, energy shield recovery stacking, Wall of Shields endgame, Infernal Legion (nerfed 67%), Blood Mage immortality loops.

The best PoE2 0.5 league starter by community consensus. Twisters (Whirling Slash generating Twister projectiles) survived the patch untouched. The new Spirit Walker ascendancy for Huntress provides cleaner leveling through Hollow Palm technique, with evasion-ES hybrid bases available around level 30 eliminating the early squishiness window. Buffed attack runes and improved armor/evasion on gear bases make this even more comfortable than 0.4.
The downside: every human being alive is starting Twisters. Spear prices will be deranged for the first 48 hours. Budget accordingly or suffer.
Best class: Huntress / Spirit Walker. Alternative: any class with a spear. Transition to Hollow Palm at level 22, full Twister spam from there. Acts completable in under 4 hours with proper execution.
Lightning Arrow Deadeye is the statistically dominant endgame build in PoE2: over 34% of top players chose Deadeye in 0.4, with the vast majority running Lightning Arrow. Patch 0.5 does nothing to threaten it. Each shot chains lightning beams to three nearby enemies; paired with Herald of Thunder on-kill, entire screens evaporate in two casts.
It requires no unique items. Bows and quivers are available from vendors throughout the campaign. The Runes of Aldur league start build that requires the least planning and the most reliable execution.
Explosive Grenade + Gas Grenade + Oil Grenade is the PoE2 grenade build guide entry that hasn't changed because it didn't need to. The strongest grenade skill drops in act 1, zone 1. New grenade launcher base type added in 0.5 is a meaningful improvement. The archetype is playable on any class, but Witchunter and Gemling extract the most value. Note: large button count early. Transitions cleanly into Explosive Shot or Freezing Bolt crossbow by midgame for one-button comfort.
The Martial Artist Monk build 0.5 is the most mechanically interesting starter this patch. The new Martial Artist ascendancy generates combo faster, enabling triple Tempest Bell placement on bosses. Three bells down, Whirling Assault hits all three: bosses vanish. Herald of Ice cleans the rest of the screen.
Levelilng options are flexible: grenades, Ice Strike, Ice Cascade with Directed Freeze into Whirling Assault at level 41. The new Way of the Stonefist node transforms gloves into a defensive and offensive powerhouse: provided you find the right bases. Warning: bell placement can and will misfire at inopportune distances from bosses. You'll live with it.
Endgame target: 9K Energy Shield, 80% Evasion, 85% Deflect. Chaos Inoculation once ES hits 4K. This is a week-2 goal, not a day-1 reality.
The best SSF build PoE2 0.5 is Erasure Dot Contagion Lich and it has been for two leagues in a row. It doesn't leech, doesn't rely on ES recovery stacking, and doesn't care about the sustainability nerfs because it was never doing those things. If you're playing without trade, this is the answer. If you find trade obvious, it's still A-tier. Just boring.

Not everything died. The Return of the Ancients expansion builds that benefit from 0.5 are worth cataloguing before you assume the entire patch is a funeral.
