WoW Midnight Leatherworking Guide 1–100
Think you're the hunter? Think again. Dive into our Midnight Prey guide and survive the hunt before your target finds you. Let's get loot!
Prey is a world activity where you, a supposedly powerful champion of Azeroth who has saved the planet approximately seventeen times, are sent out into the open world to hunt down powerful targets. The twist — and oh, Blizzard was so proud of this twist — is that your target will also hunt you. How delightfully sadistic. How utterly on-brand.
You're a veteran player. You've killed gods. You've punched the Jailer in the face. And now you're playing cat-and-mouse with some Midnight Prey location WoW elite mob while Astalor Bloodsworn whispers dramatically in your ear. Sure. Fine. Whatever you say, Blizzard.
The system was designed to bring genuine danger and unpredictability back to open-world content, which, let's be honest, had become about as threatening as a Sunday stroll through Elwynn Forest. Whether they succeeded is a matter of heated debate. Whether the rewards are worth your time is not — they absolutely are, and we'll get to that.
The core concept: you opt in, you hunt, you get ambushed, you collect Anguish, your crystal fills up, and then you fight your actual target. It's a. A brutal, potentially humiliating, surprisingly well-designed. This is the WoW Midnight Prey guide you need to understand every infuriating inch of it.

Unlocking the Prey system involves a short questline. Yes, a questline. You cannot simply stumble into this content like you're accidentally aggroing a training dummy. You have to actually choose this. Blizzard wants it to feel intentional. Respect that, even if you don't want to.
WoW Midnight Prey Quest Walkthrough
Normal difficulty has no level cap requirement — you can start Prey hunts while still leveling. Hard and Nightmare difficulties require level 90 (max level). So yes, you'll eventually have to come back. Don't forget. The Hunt Table will haunt your dreams.

The Hunt
When your target ambushes you during Step 4, focus on getting it to 50% HP — it will flee, leaving behind a blood mist trail. Follow that trail and hit it again for bonus Hunt progress. This is how Midnight Prey location WoW tracking actually works, and it's genuinely clever. Give credit where WoW Dreamrift carry's due. Begrudgingly.

Nightmare difficulty does not allow groups. Zero. None. You're alone. With a target that hits like a freight train, a Torment stacking to 4% damage increase every 60 seconds, a ghost of yourself chasing you, and Astalor telepathically commanding you to murder a random critter or suffer a DoT. This is the WoW solo Midnight Prey experience in the most psychologically devastating way possible. Blizzard called this "fun." I have questions

Affixes rotate throughout seasons. The ones below are confirmed for Season 1. Learn them. Memorize them. Tattoo them on your forearm if you're doing Nightmare.
|
Affix |
What It Does |
How Bad Is It |
|
Ambush |
Your target randomly ambushes you while you're doing other content. Base affix on all difficulties. Welcome to the system's entire identity. |
Present on every difficulty. Learn to live with it. |
|
Torment |
Increases damage you take by 2% (Hard) or 4% (Nightmare) per stack, ramping as you pursue your prey. Move fast. Die slow. Pick one. |
Manageable on Hard. A catastrophe on Nightmare if you stall. |
|
Seeping Gore |
Puddles of gore appear beneath your feet in combat. Move out of them or take extra damage. Standard MMO hazard. Still annoying. |
Standard move-out-of-the-bad mechanic. You've done this a thousand times. |
|
Echo of Predation |
A bloody spirit version of you fixates on you and chases you down. Kite it or take massive damage if it reaches you. The horror is personal. |
Extremely dangerous. Never let it touch you. Kite at all costs. |
|
Bloody Command |
Astalor whispers to you to kill something — anything — within a tight timer. Including critters. If nothing is nearby, you get a nasty DoT. One dev literally jumped off a cliff mid-fight to harpoon an eel to satisfy this. That is the content. |
Chaotic and unforgiving. Always keep a mob nearby. Failing it mid-ambush is a wipe scenario. |
|
Death Penalty |
Dying reduces your Hunt progress. Not just your ego. Actual progress. Don't die. Helpful advice from this guide. |
The most demoralizing affix in the set. There is no worse feeling. |

On Nightmare difficulty, when your prey ambushes you, it fixates entirely on you — other players nearby won't draw aggro. There might be minor AoE splash damage, so bystanders should stay clear. Prey is a deeply personal, deeply unfair experience. By design. Per Blizzard's own words. With pride.
This is why you're here. Not for the lore. Not for Blizzard's poetic vision of a hunter becoming the hunted. For the loot. Here's every reward category the Prey system offers, explained without WoW March on Quel'Danas carry.

Remnants of Anguish is Prey's dedicated currency. It's warband transferable — your alts can pool it together, which is a genuinely nice touch you should exploit aggressively. You spend it at Construct V'anore and Construct Ali'a, both located in Astalor's Sanctum.

During hunts you'll collect three tiers of Anguish Runes. Don't discard them. Bring them to Construct V'anore to exchange for other currencies including Remnants of Anguish, Dawncrests, or Coffer Key materials depending on what you need. Flexibility is, apparently, a feature now.
The Prey system has a weekly structure. Because of course it does. This is WoW. Everything has a weekly structure. Here's how it actually works so you can plan your schedule accordingly and be disappointed efficiently.
|
Parameter |
Details |
|
Hunts per week per difficulty per zone |
1 Hunt per difficulty, per zone, per week. As you unlock higher difficulties, your weekly menu grows. |
|
Optimal weekly count |
4 Hunts per week for maximum Preyseeker's Journey progress. After 4, you still earn points (50 per hunt instead of 1,000) but the pace drops hard. |
|
Journey XP — first 4 hunts |
1,000 points each. Do not skip these. |
|
Journey XP — hunts 5 onward |
50 points each. Barely worth the trauma. |
|
Journey rank range |
Rank 1 through Rank 10 |
|
Remnants of Anguish weekly cap |
Not hard-capped — accrues naturally across hunts and ambient Prey activities. |
Complete your 4 highest-difficulty Hunts first each week. Then use the Coffer Keys earned to run Bountiful Delves for additional gear. Pair with 3 Tier 11 Delves for the best Great Vault outcome. This is the WoW Midnight Prey efficient that keeps your character competitive without requiring you to also be a professional athlete.
Can you solo Prey in WoW Midnight? Yes. Should you? On Normal and Hard, absolutely. On Nightmare — also yes, but only if you've prepared, you understand the affixes, and you've made peace with dying and losing progress.
The system was deliberately designed with solo players in mind. Blizzard wanted this to be an alternative to Mythic+ and raiding, not a prerequisite for them. The rewards are genuinely competitive enough to justify the time investment.
|
Class / Spec |
Why It Works |
Solo Tier |
|
Blood Death Knight |
Near unkillable. Life regen so absurd you can facetank things normal people cannot. Death literally fears you. |
S-Tier |
|
Beast Mastery Hunter |
Kites effortlessly. Pets absorb mechanics. Range keeps you safe from the worst affixes. Very forgiving. |
A-Tier |
|
Guardian Druid |
Tanky, mobile, strong self-healing. Can reset bad situations with bear form survivability. |
A-Tier |
|
Vengeance Demon Hunter |
Mobility helps escape Seeping Gore and Echo of Predation. Self-sustain is solid. |
B-Tier |
|
Subtlety Rogue |
Vanish is a get-out-of-ambush-free card. Limited to players who know the spec well. |
B-Tier |
Survivability should be your primary stat priority for Prey regardless of spec — this is not a DPS race, it's a survival gauntlet. Prioritize throughput second. Your DPS means nothing if you're dead and losing progress to the death penalty affix.
There are several achievements tied to the Prey system. The one that matters — the one that wakes you up in cold sweats — is the WoW dungeon carry.

Tip |

Applies To |
|
Save cooldowns for the actual fight |
Not for the rare you randomly pulled. Not for three world quest mobs. When the crystal turns red, everything stops. Go in fresh. |
All difficulties |
|
When ambushed, deal with it immediately |
Drop aggro on random mobs if possible. The target ambushing you is the only thing that matters. Tunnel vision is how you die. |
All difficulties |
|
Get the ambush target to 50% HP then stop |
It flees and leaves a blood mist trail. You gain bonus progress. Don't blow all cooldowns finishing it outright. |
All difficulties |
|
Follow the blood mist trail |
Track your fleeing prey for extra Hunt progress. This is free advancement that players ignore constantly. Stop ignoring it. |
All difficulties |
|
Bloody Command — kill anything, immediately |
Jump into water if needed. Harpoon an eel. Become unhinged. This is literally what the developers intended and demonstrated themselves. |
Nightmare only |
|
Kite the Echo of Predation spirit at all times |
Do not let it reach you. The damage if it connects is catastrophic. Treat it like a void zone with a personal grudge against you specifically. |
Nightmare only |
|
Manage Torment stacks actively |
On Nightmare, +4% damage increase compounds every 60 seconds. Retreat to a rested area to clear stacks if the hunt is going sideways. You are not immortal. |
Hard / Nightmare |
|
Pool Remnants of Anguish across alts |
The currency is warband transferable. Your alt farming Normal hunts contributes to your main's mount purchases. Plan accordingly. |
All difficulties |
|
Always do your 4 cap hunts at max difficulty |
4 hunts at 1,000 Journey XP each = 4,000 per week. Miss a week and you're 4,000 points behind. That is not a gap, that is a crater. |
All difficulties |
|
If something is Midnight Prey bugged WoW — check first |
Multiple hotfixes have already dropped in the early access patch cycle. Before spending an hour fighting a broken mechanic, check Wowhead or the Blizzard forums. |
All difficulties |
On Normal difficulty, other players can and will help you. This creates spontaneous co-op moments that are actually fun. The Prey system was designed for this. Let a stranger help you kill your target. Thank them. Remember that WoW is a multiplayer game. Occasionally.
Is the Prey system in WoW Midnight a great piece of content? Against all odds, after all the ambushes, death penalties, cursed Torment stacks, and a ghost of yourself chasing you through Eversong Woods? Yes. Probably. The rewards are real. The solo viability is real. The Nightmare mount is real. The fact that you'll spend at least one session absolutely losing your mind over a Voidstorm Midnight Prey coordinates mob that won't die is also real. Welcome to WoW Midnight. Good luck out World of Warcraft gearing.
