WoW Midnight Arcane Mage Guide | Rotation | Build | Talents
The Preservation Evoker guide for WoW Midnight is live. Talents, rotations, Merithra's Blessing mechanics, BiS gear, M+ and raid builds: everything, w

Preservation Evoker is a mid-range, HoT-focused, preparation-based healer. The range cap is 25 yards. That is not a typo. Your single most powerful healing spells require you to be standing close enough to your target that they can smell your breath. If your raid group perpetually spreads to the four corners of the room, congratulations: you have made the correct choice of playing a spec that functions best when the entire group is stacked like frightened sheep. The good news is that frightened sheep is the natural state of most raid groups anyway.
The spec's mechanical identity in Midnight revolves around four pillars: Echo, Temporal Anomaly, Dream Breath, and the new Apex talent Merithra's Blessing. You apply Echo to players, you shoot a Temporal Anomaly orb through them to apply more Echoes efficiently, you exhale a Dream Breath guaranteed to trigger Merithra's Blessing, and then you consume those Echoes with smart Reversion applications. Every time you fail to stand in your own healing cone, a dragonkin somewhere weeps silently.

Strength |
Weakness |
|
Exceptional stacked AoE healing via Dream Breath and Temporal Anomaly |
25-yard range cap on core spells: you will need to be uncomfortably close to people |
|
Powerful party externals: Time Dilation, Obsidian Scales via Flameshaper Lifecinders |
Spiritbloom gone: no more single-target burst nuke to save your tank mid-pull |
|
Exceptional personal defensives: two charges of Obsidian Scales |
Very poor utility breadth: fewer interrupts, fewer dispels compared to other healers |
|
High mobility through Verdant Embrace, Hover, and Rescue |
Positioning demands are punishing: bad placement equals zero output |
|
Unique group utility: Zephyr, Tip the Scales, Fury of the Aspects |
Mana management is more demanding in Midnight following the removal of Emerald Communion |

The Preservation Evoker Midnight expansion overhaul is the Blizzard equivalent of a business owner renovating the break room by removing the coffee machine and installing a second sink. Several abilities have been removed, a few have been redesigned, and the entire playstyle has been re-anchored around a smaller set of spells that are individually more impactful. On net, the spec became more approachable and lost some complexity, which is either a gift or an insult depending on how smug you were about your Spiritbloom timing.
The following abilities no longer exist in Midnight: Spiritbloom, Emerald Communion, Cycle of Life, and Engulf. Lifebind can no longer be replicated through Echo, which removes the most elaborate ramp setup in the spec's history. Dream Breath has been significantly strengthened to compensate: its range has been increased to 40 yards, its initial heal is substantially higher, and it is now the mandatory anchor of every meaningful healing interaction through the new Merithra's Blessing Apex talent.
Key removal: Spiritbloom is gone. If your Mythic+ plan involved a Spiritbloom nuke to save your tank, that plan now involves weeping and spamming Living Flame at them while whispering apologies.
On the positive side, Verdant Embrace received an 84% healing increase and Emerald Blossom received a 70% buff. Rewind remains the most powerful raid-healing cooldown any healer possesses. The new Wings of Liberty talent grants an additional charge of Verdant Embrace, which is quietly one of the more significant quality-of-life additions to the spec in years. Dream Flight now absorbs damage you take during its flight animation, making it simultaneously your strongest raid cooldown and your most stylish way to ignore a frontal.

The keystone of the entire Midnight rotation. See dedicated section. |

The WoW Midnight Preservation Evoker talent builds divide into three meaningful contexts: Raiding, Mythic+, and PvP. The upper tier of the talent tree is fully fixed: every build takes identical talents because they constitute the non-negotiable functional core of the spec. The divergence happens in the lower half, where your choices determine whether you are a Chronowarden-flavored bronze wizard or a Flameshaper who exhales healing with the regularity of a broken furnace.
Every Preservation Evoker build in Midnight takes the following with no exceptions: Unshakable, Spiritual Clarity, Call of Ysera for Dream Breath, Temporal Anomaly with Resonating Sphere, Grace Period, Golden Hour, and Time Lord. These are not optional. These are the spec. If you do not take these, you have misread the talent tree and possibly also the English language.
The recommended raid build follows Chronowarden, which concentrates power into planned burst windows synchronized with Tip the Scales and Temporal Anomaly. Chronowarden's strength in raid lies in its predictability: you know when the big damage is coming, you set up your Echo ramp ahead of it, you release Stasis into the window, and you look like you know what you are doing for approximately eight seconds before the next mechanic. Through Reverberations and Primacy, casting Verdant Embrace consistently maintains a Haste buff that compounds your cooldown recovery and makes the entire rhythm of the rotation feel significantly faster.
Chronowarden Raid: Best on fights with predictable burst damage windows. Nozdormu Adept reduces Temporal Anomaly's mana cost and cooldown: take it every time.
Flameshaper is the preferred choice in Mythic+ for Midnight Season 1, primarily because the removal of Spiritbloom creates a healing vacuum that Flameshaper's two charges of Dream Breath help fill. The ability to place Obsidian Scales on other players via Lifecinders is a meaningful defensive tool in high keys. Two charges of Dream Breath mean you can proc Merithra's Blessing more frequently, which translates into a near-constant stream of smart Reversion healing cascading through your party after every pull. This is either powerful or deeply irritating to look at, depending on your raid frame setup.
Flameshaper M+: Legacy of the Lifebinder for dual Dream Breath charges. Lifecinders to externalize Obsidian Scales. Essential in high keys with predictable spiking damage.
Preservation Evoker talent builds Midnight break into two Hero Talent paths, and you will spend no small amount of time on Discord arguing about which one is better before ultimately learning that the answer is: it depends, and also you should sim your character.
Meta: Raid
Bronze-dragon-themed specialization in time manipulation and Temporal Anomaly enhancement. Rewards predictive play, ramp setup, and knowing damage timers better than the encounter designer intended.
Meta: M+
Breath-based sustained AoE throughput. No big burst windows to plan around: just continuous, reliable healing output through repeated Dream Breath interactions and Consume Flame triggers.
The Merithra's Blessing Apex talent is the defining mechanical addition to Preservation Evoker in WoW Midnight, and it functions as the keystone that connects every other piece of the spec's rotation into a coherent loop. It has three ranks. You want all of them. Allocate four talent points. Do not argue with this. There is no alternative Apex talent that competes.
|
Rank |
Effect |
Priority |
|
Rank 1 |
Essence consumption gives a chance to transform your next Reversion into a Merithra's Blessing: a smart bouncing heal similar to old Spiritbloom |
Always take |
|
Rank 2 |
Reversion reduces damage taken by 1% per stack and heals for 1% of max HP per stack: shows as an absorb in damage meters, confusing everyone in your raid |
Always take |
|
Rank 3 |
Dream Breath's instant healing increased by 125%. Every Dream Breath cast guarantees a Merithra's Blessing proc: this removes the RNG from the core loop entirely |
Always take |
The interaction that makes Rank 2 quietly oppressive is that it makes Reversion coverage worth maintaining on as many players as possible before damage events. Each active Reversion stack contributes absorb and healing during the hit. When combined with Echo spreading through Temporal Anomaly, you can have five or more Echoed Reversions active simultaneously, each one protecting a different target. This is what "preparation healer" means in practice: not that you heal reactively, but that you pre-apply the conditions that make your reactive casts hit for significantly more.

The WoW Midnight Preservation Evoker stat priority is refreshingly simple to understand and moderately difficult to execute correctly on your own gear without a sim. The short version is: Intellect first always, then Mastery as the dominant secondary, then Haste, then Critical Strike, then Versatility. The WoW Midnight Preservation Evoker DPS optimization standpoint shifts this slightly: Mastery provides no DPS, so if healer damage becomes relevant in a given tier, you may want to shift some weight toward Haste. It is not relevant in Season 1. Go get Mastery.
|
Stat |
Priority |
Why |
|
Intellect |
1st: always |
Scales all healing. Item level is almost always correct. Almost. |
|
Mastery: Life-Binder |
2nd |
Increases healing done when your HP percentage is higher than your target's. Stack it. Never cap it. Never neglect it. |
|
Haste |
3rd |
Reduces cooldowns on Temporal Anomaly and Verdant Embrace, adds ticks to Dream Breath and Reversion HoTs. |
|
Critical Strike |
4th |
Extends Reversion duration on crit. Mildly useful. Not exciting. |
|
Versatility |
5th |
Flat healing and damage reduction. Valuable in PvP. In PvE, it helps keep you healthy enough to maintain Mastery uptime. Still last. |
|
Leech / Avoidance |
Tertiary: pursue |
Leech keeps you healthy in raid, maintaining Mastery bonus. Avoidance preferred in M+ where group-wide AoE spikes are common. |
Sim your character. Use QuestionablyEpic (QELive) for accurate per-character stat weights. This table gives you a starting point. Your specific gear will produce different breakpoints, and generic stat lists cannot account for that.

Preservation Evoker in Midnight does not have a rotation in the conventional sense. It has a priority list built around maintaining HoT coverage on the right people, spending Essence efficiently, and setting up Echo ramps before predictable damage events rather than reacting to them afterward. If you are casting Living Flame as your primary healing spell, something has gone catastrophically wrong, and that something is probably that you forgot to cast Temporal Anomaly for the past thirty seconds.
The central loop of the Preservation Evoker single target priority in Midnight is: generate Echo through Temporal Anomaly and direct Echo casts, trigger Merithra's Blessing through Dream Breath, and consume those Echoes with Reversion and Merithra's Blessing procs. In between, you maintain Verdant Embrace on cooldown to keep Primacy stacks active (Chronowarden) or to maintain Consume Flame throughput (Flameshaper). You cast Fire Breath on cooldown to proc Leaping Flames and generate additional Essence Burst procs for free Emerald Blossom casts.
The Preservation Evoker burst cooldown alignment in Midnight centers on Stasis. The recommended default Stasis combo stores three spells in this order: Temporal Anomaly first (to pre-load Echo on release), Verdant Embrace second (to consume existing Echoes and trigger Lifebind), and Dream Breath third (for a strong AoE heal with guaranteed Merithra's Blessing proc). Release Stasis just before the damage hits. If you release it after the damage hits, that is called reactive healing and it will be less effective and also more embarrassing.
Advanced Stasis (Chronowarden): Pre-cast Dream Breath before activating Stasis to bank a Merithra's Blessing proc. Then store two Temporal Anomaly casts and Merithra's Blessing inside. Release covers a majority of the raid with Echo then detonates with a smart bouncing heal. Requires not pressing any healing spells between the two Temporal Anomaly casts, which will feel physically painful.
The WoW Midnight Preservation Evoker raid rotation is the art of pretending to be relaxed while internally running a damage timer spreadsheet that your raid leader does not know exists. Raid healing as Preservation rewards knowing when the damage is coming, applying your HoTs before it arrives, and then releasing your Stasis combo at the precise moment the damage lands so that the healing appears to be effortless. It is not effortless. It is pre-meditated.
The default loop in a raid environment between damage events is: maintain Reversion on tanks and priority targets, cast Temporal Anomaly through the group to distribute Echoes via Resonating Sphere, keep Dream Breath cycling at Rank 1 for consistent throughput and Merithra's Blessing procs, and spend Essence Burst procs on Emerald Blossom to generate Twin Echoes. Before large damage events, ramp by building additional Echo stacks and pre-casting Reversion on the targets most likely to take concentrated damage.
Rewind is the strongest single healing cooldown any healer in the game possesses. It reverses 30% of damage taken by the entire raid in the last five seconds. Use it early enough that targets are still alive to be reversed. Holding it until someone is already dead makes it a very expensive buff to corpses. Dream Flight provides enormous HoT coverage on all allies in your flight path and now absorbs damage equal to up to 100% of your maximum health during the animation: meaning you can fly through a frontal while Dream Flighting and survive it, which is either clever or reckless depending on whether your flight path was intentional.
Tip the Scales should generally be paired with Stasis releases, allowing you to instantly max-rank Dream Breath as one of your stored spells without the channel delay. The combined healing of an instant max-rank Dream Breath into a pre-staged Temporal Anomaly Echo release is the strongest single cooldown burst Preservation has access to. Use it on cooldown. Do not hoard it for a "better moment." The better moment is the moment it is off cooldown.
The Preservation Evoker Mythic+ build for WoW Midnight runs Flameshaper as the preferred hero talent due to its stronger sustained output and the frankly indispensable Lifecinders talent in high keys. Mythic+ as Preservation Evoker is a masterclass in being simultaneously responsible for keeping five people alive and being the most positionally demanding spec in the dungeon. You must be in range. You must be facing the right direction. You must not stand in the thing. You must also track your Essence, your Echo buffs, your Temporal Anomaly cooldown, and whether the tank has accidentally run the entire pack behind a pillar where your Dream Breath cannot reach them.
The Preservation Evoker AoE rotation in Mythic+ between pulls prioritizes immediate Temporal Anomaly through the group to shield and Echo all five players, followed by Dream Breath through the pack for immediate AoE healing and Merithra's Blessing proc, then consuming generated Echoes with Reversion on any player taking focused damage. Emerald Blossom is significantly more valuable in Midnight than in prior expansions: its 70% buff has elevated it from an Essence-dump afterthought to a genuine AoE heal worth casting during chaotic damage windows when players are stacked.
Positioning discipline in M+: Temporal Anomaly travels in a straight line. Dream Breath is a frontal cone. Verdant Embrace physically moves you. All three of these facts will conspire to get you killed approximately once per dungeon until you develop the muscle memory to manage them simultaneously.
Time Dilation is your primary external cooldown: it distributes incoming damage on your target over eight seconds, buying your healer-self time to heal them through it. Flameshaper with Lifecinders lets you place Obsidian Scales on other players, giving your tank or any squishy DPS a 30% damage reduction cooldown. Zephyr reduces AoE damage taken by 20% for your five nearest allies: use it on pulls where ground AoE is the primary threat, not single-target casts.
The Preservation Evoker PvP guide for WoW Midnight arena build is the section where we acknowledge that playing a healer in PvP requires both psychological resilience and the ability to enjoy being trained by melee for the duration of a match. Preservation is a capable arena healer. It is not the strongest healer in PvP. It brings exceptional mobility, strong externals, and the unique Time Spiral utility that lets your partner use their movement ability on cooldown, which sounds niche until the Windwalker in your team realizes they can Roll out of everything indefinitely.
The Preservation Evoker arena build WoW Midnight prioritizes Versatility above all secondary stats: the PvP stat priority is completely different from PvE. Versatility increases both your healing output and your personal damage reduction, which matters enormously when two Rogues have decided that you personally are responsible for their losses this season. Haste follows for faster casts and shorter cooldown cycles on your Empowered spells. Mastery drops significantly in PvP value because keeping your own HP percentage high enough to maintain its bonus is functionally impossible when you are being actively hunted.
Preservation performs best in compositions that can generate frequent crowd control, allowing you to cast Empowered spells without interruption and enabling your partners to follow up on your Time Spiral windows. Pairing with specs that have strong CC chains: Mage, Death Knight, Warlock: gives you room to breathe. Going into melee-heavy cleave as a Preservation Evoker with no way to create distance is a character-building experience that will either teach you the limits of Verdant Embrace as a mobility tool or convince you to play Mistweaver.
The Preservation Evoker BiS gear for WoW Midnight Season 1 begins, as all gearing conversations do, with the tier set. Acquiring four pieces of the Season 1 tier set is your primary gearing objective, full stop. The 2-piece bonus increases Verdant Embrace healing by 20% and reduces its cooldown by 2 seconds. The 4-piece bonus causes Verdant Embrace to grow an Emerald Blossom on your target at full effectiveness. This is an enormous healing increase in Mythic+ where Verdant Embrace is already your primary single-target tool, and it is also a source of free Twin Echoes procs for Chronowarden, because Blizzard occasionally rewards talent tree coherence.
Tier slot priority is Shoulders, Chest, Gloves, and Legs first, then the Helmet to complete the four-piece bonus. Upgrade your tier pieces to Myth track before upgrading non-tier pieces, unless the non-tier piece is a weapon: weapons are the exception because item level on a weapon contributes more raw Intellect than almost any other slot.
|
Slot |
Priority Note |
|
Weapon |
Highest priority non-tier slot. Intellect from weapon upgrades is disproportionate. Target weapon drops from the raid immediately. |
|
Tier (Shoulders, Chest, Gloves, Legs) |
Four-piece bonus is transformative. Prioritize Myth track tier above everything except the weapon. |
|
Tier (Helm) |
Complete the set. Even a lower item level tier helm completes the bonus and outperforms a higher item level non-tier helm. |
|
Rings + Neck |
Always socketed in Midnight. Target Mastery on rings. Telluric Eversong Diamond in the neck socket for mana sustainability. |
|
Other slots |
Item level is king. Prioritize Mastery/Haste secondary combinations where possible. |

Best Preservation Evoker trinkets for WoW Midnight lean heavily toward Mastery-stat trinkets with secondary Intellect procs, because Mastery is the dominant secondary and Intellect scales everything. Do not overthink this. If the trinket gives you Mastery and occasionally makes you briefly much stronger, it is probably good. If it gives you Versatility, it is probably not.
|
Trinket |
Type |
Notes |
|
Locus-Walker's Ribbon |
Raid |
Mastery trinket with an Intellect proc that ramps over time. Exceptionally strong in sustained raid encounters. Highest priority raid trinket. |
|
Gaze of the Alnseer |
Raid |
Mastery trinket with a stacking Intellect buff proc. Very strong in any fight where you are actively healing throughout. |
|
Refueling Orb |
Raid |
Intellect trinket that provides Versatility to teammates and heals them below 50% HP. Combines personal throughput with mild group utility. |
|
Emerald Coach's Whistle |
Raid |
Intellect trinket. Your helpful spells can grant both you and the coached target a Mastery buff. Strong synergy with the stat priority. |
|
Vaelgor's Final Stare |
Raid (Boss Drop) |
Second best available according to Icy Veins. Drops from the raid. |
Sim your trinkets. QuestionablyEpic provides trinket sims that account for interaction effects. The list above represents general ranking. Your specific character's stats may change the order.
The Preservation Evoker best professions for WoW Midnight answer the question of what to do with your limited crafting points, and the answer is "something that makes you harder to kill or gives you better consumables." The meta combination for healers in Midnight is Alchemy paired with Enchanting, which covers your consumable needs, provides Soulbinding materials for crafted gear upgrades, and lets you disenchant the disappointing items you will receive from the Great Vault.
|
Profession |
Tier |
Reason |
|
Alchemy |
S |
Self-sufficient flask and potion production. Flasks of the Magisters and Lightfused Mana Potion are your primary consumables: crafting them yourself removes a significant recurring gold cost. |
|
Enchanting |
A |
Crafts your own ring and weapon enchants. Enchant Ring: Zul'jin's Mastery on both rings is the default choice. Saves consistent gold expenditure across patch cycles. |
|
Herbalism |
A (alt to Enchanting) |
Passive gold generation to fund Alchemy mats. Passive gathering procs in outdoor content. Less useful if you are not actively farming. |
|
Jewelcrafting |
B |
Crafts gems for your sockets. Mastery gems are what you want. Useful if you are self-sufficient in other crafting slots, but Alchemy takes priority. |
The Preservation Evoker macros and addons section exists because the spec's entire mechanical identity revolves around tracking Echo buffs on multiple players simultaneously, which is a task your human brain is not equipped to perform unaided. If you are attempting to play Preservation without dedicated healing frame tracking and Echo buff timers, you are doing the mechanical equivalent of doing arithmetic with oven mitts on.
Tip the Scales into Dream Breath: the most important macro in the spec. Note: requires the Font of Magic talent OR use the empowered spell ID 382614. Without Font of Magic, use the base ID 355936 in your macro or reference the spell name directly:
#showtooltip

Keep Temporal Anomaly on cooldown, Dream Breath cycling, and consume Echo with Reversion. Everything else follows naturally from there.
Chronowarden for raid burst windows, Flameshaper for Mythic+ sustained output and the Lifecinders defensive external.
It was removed. Dream Breath, Verdant Embrace, and Merithra's Blessing collectively replace its role. Accept this and move forward.
Before someone dies, never after. The more damage already taken by the raid, the more Rewind heals. Timing is everything.
Your range is 25 yards and your tank ran the pack into the next zip code. Both of you need to make better decisions.
