WoW Midnight Windrunner Spire Dungeon Guide | M+ season 1 guide
Our WoW Midnight Unholy DK guide is live. Forbidden Knowledge Apex, Putrefy rotation, Rider vs San'layn talents, M+ and raid builds, stat priority, Bi
WoW Midnight Unholy Death Knight guide you did not ask for but clearly needed, given the state of your parses. You have chosen the Unholy Death Knight in the Midnight expansion: a spec that raises a small army of psychotic ghouls, infects everything it touches with diseases that were illegal in the Scourge War, and then has the audacity to be one of the tankiest DPS specs in the entire game. The Unholy Death Knight Midnight expansion era is, mechanically speaking, a streamlined nightmare. Festering Wounds are dead. Defile is dead. Apocalypse has been put in a coffin, which is appropriate. In their place you get a cleaner, meaner loop built around Lesser Ghouls, Dread Plague, and the new Putrefy ability that your entire rotation will now orbit like a very confused moon.
The Unholy DK class overview WoW Midnight can be summarized simply: you are a mid-range melee that operates most of its kit from 30 yards, summons things that fight for you, applies two different plagues simultaneously, and heals itself through Death Strike with the nonchalance of someone who forgot they were supposed to care about their health bar. You are not fast. You are not elegant. You are a lurching, plague-ridden, ghoul-managing machine that will outlive every other DPS on the encounter by pure passive attrition.
Unholy DK in Midnight is particularly beginner-hostile in one specific way: you must track two different plagues, a Lesser Ghoul stack counter, Runic Power, Runes, and your Putrefy charges simultaneously. If your attention span requires one window, this spec will cause you suffering. That is, frankly, fitting.

How to play Unholy Death Knight in WoW Midnight starts with understanding that Blizzard looked at the War Within version of the spec and decided it had too many moving parts. They were right, which is why it hurts a little to admit the redesign is actually functional. Here is what you need to know before you sit down and try to play your old rotation from muscle memory and immediately fail.
The most significant change is the removal of Festering Wounds from enemies and their replacement with Lesser Ghoul stacks on you, the player. Festering Strike now applies Lesser Ghoul stacks to yourself rather than wound stacks to targets. Each subsequent Scourge Strike consumes a Lesser Ghoul stack to summon an actual Lesser Ghoul that attacks your target. The tracking has moved from your enemy's debuff bar to your own buff bar, and somehow this is considered an improvement. It is. Do not argue.
Apocalypse is gone. Defile is gone. Legion of Souls no longer exists. You now have exactly two major cooldowns: Army of the Dead on a 90-second cooldown and Dark Transformation on 45 seconds. That is it. The 4-button cooldown opener sequences of previous expansions have been mercifully euthanized. A new core ability, Putrefy, now anchors your rotation: it sacrifices a Lesser Ghoul in an explosion that deals AoE shadow damage and generates Runic Power, and your entire talent tree has been redesigned around it.
The new plague situation is also worth understanding. You now maintain two diseases simultaneously: Virulent Plague, which spreads to all nearby enemies, and Dread Plague, a pure single-target disease that can only exist on one enemy at a time. Both are applied via Outbreak, both are extended by Death Coil and Epidemic, and forgetting either one is a parse crime you will carry silently to your next wipe.

WoW Midnight Unholy Death Knight talent builds revolve around a core choice that even Blizzard cannot stop bringing up: minions or plagues. You are not choosing between good and bad. You are choosing between two viable philosophies, one of which involves summoning an army of dead people and the other of which involves watching numbers tick on a debuff bar while occasionally doing the same thing. Both work. One is more offensive to look at on Warcraft Logs. You decide which.
Rider of the Apocalypse is currently the dominant choice for Mythic+ and is competitive in raid. It leans into your minion army, randomly summons Horsemen of the Apocalypse to assist you for 10 seconds each, and grants Death Charge as a mobility option, which is the only reason some people take it. San'layn focuses on Vampiric Strike, Plague damage amplification, and the Essence of the Blood Queen buff, which you maintain by pressing buttons in the correct order. San'layn is excellent if you enjoy Plague builds and are willing to track an additional buff uptime. It is also the pick for the Pestilence talent path.
Invest all 4 Apex talent points into Forbidden Knowledge. At max rank, casting Army of the Dead transforms your Death Coil into Necrotic Coil and your Epidemic into Graveyard for 30 seconds. Rank 4 also makes Dread Plague have a 20% chance to proc a free Putrefy. This is not optional. Take all four ranks. Every single one.

This is the Unholy DK Mythic+ build WoW Midnight adapted slightly for raid single-target encounters. The core talents are Reanimation, Commander of the Dead, and Menacing Magus to maximize the damage of your minion swarm. Festering Scythe is mandatory and costs no Runes, which is the only reason your resource management does not collapse entirely.
|
Talent |
Priority |
Why You Want It |
|
Reanimation |
Mandatory |
Summons Magus of the Dead when Lesser Ghouls are Putrefied. More undead. Always more undead. |
|
Commander of the Dead |
Mandatory |
Buffs nearly every minion you summon. The exceptions are irrelevant. Take it. |
|
Menacing Magus |
Mandatory |
Makes your Magi cleave. This is where your AoE damage actually lives. |
|
Outnumber |
Mandatory |
Buffs your permanent ghoul and Lesser Ghouls; enables Sweeping Claws cleave attack. |
|
Festering Scythe |
Mandatory |
Free Rune cast that boosts disease tick rate by 35%. Without it you run dry on resources. Frequently. |
|
Scythe of Decay |
Recommended |
Mid-tier damage talent. Synergizes with disease uptime. |
|
Pestilence (San'layn path) |
Situational |
Converts Outbreak to Pestilence after Dark Transformation; consumes all Plagues for a Putrefy charge. Multi-target gold. |

The Unholy Death Knight Spellslinger build Midnight is not a hero talent path for Death Knights; Spellslinger is a Mage hero talent. If someone told you Unholy DK has a Spellslinger build, they were either wrong or trying to get you to uninstall. Unholy DK Frostfire build WoW Midnight is similarly not a thing. Your hero talent choices are Rider of the Apocalypse and San'layn. Pick one. Do not look for Spellslinger. It is not there and it will never be there and this sentence exists because the SEO keywords required it.

Grips an enemy toward you. The most iconic Death Knight ability. In Mythic+ it is a crowd control tool, an interrupt substitute, and a method of eliminating someone from the tank's threat list. Use it wisely or you will hear about it. |

The Unholy Death Knight single-target priority Midnight is not a fixed sequence you execute robotically. It is a priority list you react to, with your judgment applied in approximately three key decision points per GCD. That said, the opener is structured, and you should commit it to memory before your next prog night because fumbling it in front of 24 people is a specific type of embarrassing that lasts.
→Outbreak: Apply both plagues before anything else. Non-negotiable.
→Festering Strike ×2: Build Lesser Ghoul stacks so your next Scourge Strikes are not dead weight.
→Army of the Dead + Dark Transformation + Trinket + Racial + Potion: Stack every buff simultaneously. Macro Army and Dark Transformation together.
→Putrefy: Use your first charge immediately. Do not bank both charges while your cooldown window burns.
→Soul Reaper: With Reaping talented, cast immediately after Dark Transformation.
→ Enter priority rotation below.
Gargoyle Note
If you have Summon Gargoyle talented, your Death Coil priority spikes dramatically during its window. Every Death Coil cast buffs the Gargoyle. Spend Runic Power on Death Coil as aggressively as possible during the summon duration.
The WoW Midnight Unholy DK AoE rotation is one of the genuinely better redesign outcomes in the Midnight patch cycle. Previously, AoE required standing in Death and Decay while your entire package of cooldowns aligned with the pull. Now, your Scourge Strike passively cleaves multiple targets and your AoE rotation is almost identical to your single-target rotation with one critical swap: Epidemic instead of Death Coil at 3 or more targets.
The distinction is precise. Use Death Coil at 1-2 targets. Swap to Epidemic at 3 or more targets. During Forbidden Knowledge windows, these thresholds shift to 4 or fewer targets for Necrotic Coil and 5 or more for Graveyard. If you cannot remember the threshold mid-pull, your dead raid members will not judge you. They are dead.
The Unholy Death Knight Mythic+ build WoW Midnight is the Rider of the Apocalypse path with Reanimation, Menacing Magus, and Outnumber filling your core damage slots. The reasoning is straightforward: Mythic+ is a sustained AoE environment with frequent pack resets, and your minion army scales brutally with target count. More mobs means more Epidemic value, more Scourge Strike cleave, and more Magus of the Dead launching Frostbolts and Shadow Bolts into the pack while you pretend you are managing it intentionally.
Your utility contribution in Mythic+ is genuinely significant. Death Grip allows you to pull stragglers into packs, interrupt uninterruptible casts by dragging enemies mid-channel, and generally rearrange the dungeon layout in ways your tank did not request. Use this power responsibly. Use it more than responsibly. Death Grip is the reason Unholy DK gets invited to Mythic+ despite being a slow, lumbering plague machine. Do not waste it.
Your Anti-Magic Shell is invaluable on magic-heavy packs. Use it proactively on known AoE casts to generate bonus Runic Power and ignore the mechanic simultaneously. This is efficient. Your healer will not specifically thank you but they will notice your health bar does not move.
Compared to raid, your Mythic+ build slightly prioritizes cleave talents over pure single-target throughput. Commander of the Dead and Menacing Magus are mandatory in both contexts. In M+, you are more likely to run Outnumber and lean into the Reanimation chain to have Magus of the Dead present for every meaningful pack. Death Charge from Rider of the Apocalypse also earns its keep in Mythic+ where movement between packs is frequent and your default mobility is that of a man wearing full plate armor in a swamp.
The Forbidden Knowledge Apex talent transforms Death Coil and Epidemic into Necrotic Coil and Graveyard for 30 seconds after Army of the Dead. In Mythic+ packs, this window is your burst phase. Line Army up with the start of a pull, transition to Graveyard at 5 or more stacked targets, and watch your Warcraft Logs entry climb into the zone of things you can actually show people.
The WoW Midnight Unholy Death Knight raid rotation is, relative to previous iterations of the spec, pleasantly straightforward. You no longer need a spreadsheet and a timer addon to execute your opener. You need Outbreak, two Festering Strikes, your cooldowns stacked simultaneously, and then the priority list described above. That is substantially less setup than any Unholy DK rotation since Legion, and if you are grateful, you may privately thank Blizzard. You should not expect them to hear it.
The Unholy DK burst cooldown alignment Midnight is built around Army of the Dead as the primary anchor. Every other cooldown, trinket, racial ability, and external buff should be used simultaneously with Army. Dark Transformation is off the GCD and should be macroed with Army so they are never misaligned. Power Infusion, if your healer is generous, should be requested for the Army cast. The Forbidden Knowledge window lasts 30 seconds and your Necrotic Coil and Graveyard casts during this window are your highest-output moments in the fight. Do not waste them pressing Festering Strike.
WoW Midnight Unholy Death Knight DPS optimization comes down to three disciplines: plague uptime, Lesser Ghoul stack management, and cooldown stacking. Plague uptime is binary. Either both plagues are up or you are losing damage. Check your Virulent Plague and Dread Plague at every point in the fight where you would otherwise stare blankly at your character. Stack management means staying between 4 and 6 Lesser Ghoul stacks: high enough to have Ghouls ready for Putrefy, low enough that you are not sitting on resources while enemies live. Cooldown stacking is the mechanical skill ceiling: every major cooldown must align with Army, every trinket must align with Army, and the 90-second Army cooldown is your damage metronome that the rest of your rotation orbits.
The Unholy Death Knight PvP guide Midnight starts with the same truth it always has: you are a medium-slow bruiser with exceptional stickiness, two plagues that annoy people into bad decisions, and enough defensives to make the enemy healer consider their life choices. You are not burst-first. You are sustained pressure layered on top of the constant psychological threat of Army of the Dead, Death Grip into an awkward position, and the fact that you can self-heal through Death Strike while they watch.

The Unholy Death Knight arena build WoW Midnight prioritizes Versatility above all other stats in PvP. Versatility is your output and your survival simultaneously, and at 20% Versatility you become noticeably harder to kill while your damage output remains meaningful. After Versatility, stack Mastery and Haste together: Mastery amplifies your disease and minion damage while Haste gives you faster Rune regeneration and a lower GCD, meaning more button presses per second, which in PvP means more pressure per second.
The Unholy DK PvP guide Midnight arena composition usually involves pairing with a healer that can survive the amount of attention an Army of the Dead pull generates in a 2v2 or 3v3 setting. Resto Druid and Holy Paladin are traditional companions. You provide the undead army and the crowd control via Death Grip. They provide the healing and the bewilderment at how many ghouls are currently on screen.

PvP Defensive Toolkit
In arena, Anti-Magic Shell prevents crowd control applications while active. Use it proactively against casters before they land a CC chain, not reactively after you are already polymorphed. You cannot press Anti-Magic Shell while you are a sheep. The spec does not work that way.

The Unholy Death Knight BiS gear WoW Midnight is subject to the Midnight Season 1 tier set bonuses, which are notably significant enough to alter your gearing priority. The 2-piece set bonus increases Putrefy damage by 20% and causes your next Scourge Strike to cost no Rune. The 4-piece bonus makes that Rune-free Scourge Strike also proc additional effects tied to your Lesser Ghoul engine. Both bonuses directly interact with core rotation abilities, which means tier is mandatory and you should acquire it before optimizing individual stat combinations on off-pieces.

Best Unholy Death Knight trinkets WoW Midnight are on-use Mastery or Crit trinkets that can be aligned with your Army of the Dead cooldown window. The Forbidden Knowledge window lasts 30 seconds. Your trinkets should last at least 15 seconds and be usable simultaneously with Army. Any on-use trinket that procs your highest secondary stat (Mastery) during this window is dramatically more valuable than a passive trinket of the same item level. The Potion of Recklessness also procs your highest secondary stat, which is why you want Mastery to be your largest secondary pool before using it.
If your trinket procs Mastery and you are using Potion of Recklessness, use the potion first, then the trinket. This ensures the potion proc does not consume your highest-stat window. Getting this backwards is a parse-killer that feels entirely disproportionate to how small a mistake it is.
For a current BiS trinket list, verify on Raidbots with your own gear profile. Trinket rankings shift with tuning patches and specific item level distributions, and any static trinket tier list from a guide that has not been updated in three weeks should be treated as a suggestion from someone who also still uses their War Within rotation.
Unholy Death Knight best professions Midnight follow the same logic as every other DPS spec: you want professions that either reduce your consumable costs, provide unique on-use stat bonuses that align with your cooldown windows, or offer exclusive crafting options for BiS embellishments. Death Knight has access to Blacksmithing as a thematic choice that provides additional gem sockets, and Alchemy is perennially valuable for extended flask and potion effects.

Unholy Death Knight macros and addons Midnight serve a specific purpose: reducing the cognitive overhead of tracking two plagues, Lesser Ghoul stacks, Runic Power, Runes, and cooldown alignment simultaneously. If you are doing all of that in your head without any UI assistance, you are either a savant or lying about your parse. The following macros are functional and tested. They exist because macroing obvious things manually is a skill floor, not a flex.
#showtooltip Army of the Dead /cast Army of the Dead /cast Dark Transformation
Macro Army of the Dead with Dark Transformation. Dark Transformation is off the GCD, so they fire simultaneously. Commander of the Dead buffs both windows. There is no reason these should ever be on separate keybinds.
#showtooltip Putrefy /cast Putrefy /use [combat] 13
Optional: attach your on-use trinket to Putrefy if you want a simplified alignment macro. Adjust slot number to match your trinket slot (13 = first trinket slot, 14 = second).
#showtooltip Outbreak /cast [@mouseover,harm,nodead] Outbreak; Outbreak
Mouseover Outbreak for rapid disease application in Mythic+ without losing your main target. Particularly useful for applying Dread Plague to priority targets while your Virulent Plague spreads naturally.

Yes. Strong sustained damage, exceptional survivability, and passive AoE cleave make it consistently valuable in all content.
Rider of the Apocalypse for Mythic+ and most raid scenarios; San'layn for sustained Plague and priority damage builds.
Putrefy is Midnight's new core rotational cooldown: it sacrifices a Lesser Ghoul for AoE shadow damage and Runic Power generation.
Strength, then Mastery, then Critical Strike, then Haste, then Versatility. Sim your character on Raidbots before major purchases.
No. Wounds are replaced by Lesser Ghoul stacks that build on you, the player, via Festering Strike instead.
