Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Zombies: Season 3 / DLC 3 Complete Guide

You survived Paradox Junction. The Warden locked you in a nuclear Nuketown pocket dimension, you killed the Dark Heart, and presumably you felt things. Now Black Ops 7 Zombies is dragging you into the cold. Season 3 launches on April 2, 2026, with the actual prize: the round-based map Totenreich: held hostage behind the mid-season Reloaded update. Treyarch has confirmed this is their new normal. Round-based maps release at Reloaded. You will wait. You will be fine.

Season 3 is officially DLC 3 in the Black Ops 7 Zombies roadmap, continuing the overarching Dark Ether narrative that began in Ashes of the Damned. The season introduces a new competitive mode, a new survival map, Directed Mode for Paradox Junction, and a Richtofen-centric round-based map that might or might not be spiritually descended from Call of the Dead: Treyarch insists it is entirely original, bless their hearts.

The pitch in one sentence: A remote Norwegian fishing village trapped in the Dark Ether, an Origins robot on the horizon, and a lighthouse that definitely does not remind you of anything.

At launch on April 2, players get Ashwood Survival, the new Zombie Battle mode, Directed Mode for Paradox Junction, and six weapons trickling through battle pass and events. Totenreich, the Wildfire field upgrade, and Ultra Rarity Legacy Weapons arrive at Reloaded: targeting late April to mid-May, assuming the shorter-season promise holds and is not quietly abandoned.

The New Map

Category

Details

Setting

A remote, mid-20th-century Norwegian fishing town frozen in time.

Release Date

Scheduled for Late April / Early May 2026 (Season 3 Reloaded).

Protagonist Focus

Dr. Edward Richtofen; the map explores his "legacy" and Group 935's dark history.

Environmental Hazards

Dense fog affecting visibility and frequent lightning strikes across the coast.

Key Landmarks

A central Lighthouse and a dormant Origins-style Giant Robot.

Totenreich: German for "Realm of the Dead," which Treyarch would like you to find intimidating: is the mid-season round-based Zombies map for Season 3. It is set in a remote Norwegian fishing town that has been trapped in time after Group 935 experiments warped the entire island into the Dark Ether. The official description invites you warmly, then tells you to prepare to uncover "what went so very, very wrong here." Two "verys." That is the level of literary emphasis Treyarch deployed for this occasion.

The Group 935 Connection

The official description explicitly names Group 935: the secretive scientific organization responsible for Element 115 research, zombie creation, teleportation disasters, and an astounding number of multiverse-scale catastrophic decisions: as the force that warped the Norwegian island into the Dark Ether. The presence of an Origins robot ties these experiments directly to World War I-era research in France, connecting Totenreich to the oldest threads of Richtofen's biography and the broader mythology the franchise has spent fifteen years constructing with cheerful disregard for player sanity.

Some community speculation points toward this location being the legendary Diesendra village referenced in earlier scattered lore. Treyarch has not confirmed this. They rarely confirm anything until the blog post that drops five days before release, because ambiguity is a free engagement mechanic.

New Modes & Features

Zombie Battle mode is the headline launch addition. It is described as "fiercely frenetic, free-for-all competitive": a sentence containing three adjectives and zero apologies. Two to four players share the same map. Each player has their own private horde of zombies, helpfully color-coded by eye color so nobody can blame their deaths on someone else's undead. The last player standing wins. No direct player damage. No equipment or score streak interference. Just superior zombie-killing skills, or the absence of them.

Private match support is included from day one: meaning Treyarch absorbed the community's complaints about Grief mode in Black Ops 6, which infamously launched without the ability to play with friends privately. Progress, technically, comes in many forms.

Ashwood Survival Map

Launching on day one, Ashwood Survival is extracted from the central grounds of Ashes of the Damned: the Civil War-era town that served as the game's launch map. Players begin in Rabbit Alley with the immediate objective of clearing Fog Zombies from the ground floor to access the Pack-a-Punch machine buried beneath the town. The structure rewards efficiency. It does not reward passive play. It does not reward hiding in corners. It has opinions about you.

  • Round 25 Reward: "Abomination Carcass" Weapon Charm + 2,500 XP
  • Round 50 Reward: "Hidden Power" GobbleGum + 5,000 XP
  • Cursed Mode on Ashwood: Pistol start, limited HUD, and the quiet knowledge that you chose this

The Survivor of Ash event runs alongside Ashwood's launch: rewards include weapon camos, an emblem, a weapon charm, and an Echo 12 shotgun blueprint. The event art is reportedly striking enough that people initially thought it was for Totenreich. It is not. It is for the survival map. Ashwood gets nice art. This is fine.

Paradox Junction Additions: Directed Mode and Starting Room

For the portion of the player base that has not yet completed the main quest of Paradox Junction: in which the Warden traps the crew in a nuclear-era Nuketown, Ava Jansen (daughter of Samantha Maxis) is imprisoned in the Warden's throne room and drained of her Dark Ether powers, and the Twins provide running commentary of emotionally varied quality: Season 3 brings Directed Mode. On-screen quest steps. A 15-round cap. The Blundergat Wonder Weapon, upgradeable to the Sundergat. Completion earns the "Timeshatter" Blundergat blueprint, a calling card, and 5,000 XP.

Starting Room Mode also arrives at Paradox Junction this season, joining Ashes of the Damned and Astra Malorum. You begin with minimal resources, which is the mode's way of asking how much you actually know about a map when everything has been taken from you.

Iron Core Scorestreak

The Iron Core scorestreak is a radioactive area-denial device. Radiation pulses expand from a small to large radius, passing through walls, damaging everything they touch before dissipating and recharging. The official description suggests it is best used at chokepoints and boss fight holdout positions: which is a reasonable theory that will be tested and either confirmed or abandoned by the community within the first week of Season 3's runtime.

The Story So Far (Good Luck)

The Black Ops 7 Zombies narrative operates on the assumption that you have been paying close attention since 2008. If you have not, here is a summary designed to be technically accurate while conveying the appropriate level of existential weight this franchise places on anyone who asks a sincere question about the plot.

Group 935 and the Dark Ether: The Foundations

Group 935 was a secretive scientific organization, operational during both World Wars, that researched Element 115: a meteorite-derived substance enabling zombie creation, teleportation, and the kind of multiverse-destabilizing experimentation that sounds thrilling until it warps a Norwegian fishing island into a dimensional hellscape. Dr. Richtofen was one of their principal scientists. Dr. Ludvig Maxis was the organization's leader and, more relevantly to the ongoing plot, the father of Samantha Maxis.

The Dark Ether is the dimension into which the Black Ops 7 crew has been trapped since the end of Ashes of the Damned. It is not pleasant. It is, however, extraordinarily productive as a setting for video game maps, which is presumably why it was chosen.

Samantha Maxis: A Lineage of Compounding Catastrophe

Samantha Maxis is arguably the most consequential figure in all of Zombies lore, which the franchise has had fifteen years to ensure through escalating revelations and dramatically timed silences. Born to Ludvig Maxis, she was accidentally teleported to the Moon after Richtofen trapped her in an unstable experiment involving her dog Fluffy: who became, in the process, the first Hellhound. On the Moon, she contacted the Pyramid Device and gained control over the undead. This made everything substantially worse for everyone who was not Samantha, and arguable for Samantha too.

In the current Black Ops 7 continuity, Samantha Maxis sacrificed herself at the end of Black Ops 6 to close a Dark Ether breach. Her reward for this act of heroism is being absent from the game, referenced in audio logs, and having her daughter Ava Jansen imprisoned by the Warden in Paradox Junction. The franchise honors its characters in ways that are sometimes difficult to distinguish from punishment.

The Twins: The Most Informed Children in the Dark Ether

The Twins are two child-like sisters: one physical, one ethereal: who serve as the Demonic Announcers for Paradox Junction and have appeared as secondary characters across Ashes of the Damned and Astra Malorum. They are somehow aware of events spanning the entire Zombies multiverse, including the existence of Samantha Maxis as both a child and as an adult. One twin is positive and energetic. The other is raspy and fatalistic. Together they represent the franchise's ongoing commitment to making child characters both the most unsettling and most plot-informed entities in any given room.

The zombie twin is canonically infatuated with Tank Dempsey, as evidenced by chalk drawings found in the map. This is documented lore. The franchise chose to include this. It is fine.

Cancelled Futures: Manhattan, New York City, and the Volcano

Earlier in Black Ops 7's development, leaked map concepts included an alternate-history scenario in which Germany wins World War II and subsequently launches an atomic strike on New York City: specifically Manhattan. This was reportedly cancelled when Treyarch decided, charitably speaking, that the Nazi imagery was more than current sensibilities required. The concept was reworked into what eventually became Astra Malorum, which is set in a skull-shaped observatory in space, which is a different kind of uncomfortable.

Still reportedly in development is a volcano map: set at the foot of an erupting Japanese volcano and tied to Takeo Masaki's personal storyline. This represents one of the surviving original leaked concepts and would continue the tradition of character-specific maps that Black Ops 3 pioneered to considerable acclaim. Whether it arrives at DLC 4 or later in the season structure remains unconfirmed.

Ultra Rarity Legacy Weapons: The New Box Tier

Mid-season introduces Ultra Rarity Legacy Weapons: a new tier of weapons carried forward from previous Call of Duty titles and dropped into the Mystery Box as extremely rare pulls with stats described as rivaling Wonder Weapons. The first arrives at Reloaded. Subsequent additions are planned beyond Season 3, suggesting this is now a permanent ecosystem feature rather than a one-season experiment. The most probable candidates based on thematic resonance with a World War II-adjacent Norwegian map are the MP-40 and the PPSH, though Treyarch has not confirmed which weapon opens this category. The only way to obtain an Ultra Rarity Legacy Weapon outside of Cursed Mode is through the box. You will spin it many times. It will not drop immediately. This is the design.

Wildfire Field Upgrade

The Wildfire field upgrade is confirmed original: not a returning ability from Cold War or Black Ops 6, but a new addition to the field upgrade ecosystem. Activation imbues the player with fire: a burst of flame on activation, burn damage on nearby enemies, a movement speed increase, and slowing effects on targets caught in range. A full Augment list is promised in the Reloaded blog. If the augment system permits anything approaching aggressive builds, Wildfire will feature in every high-round loadout discussion before May ends.

New Weapon Attachments Worth Noting

  • Spear Gun Barrel on the X9 Maverick assault rifle: converts the weapon into something Treyarch will need to balance within two weeks
  • Underbarrel Shotgun for the Shadow SK sniper rifle: for those who feel the sniper experience is incomplete without close-range backup
  • Pistol Conversion Kit for the Warden marksman rifle: reduces it to a compact pistol form factor, which is either brilliant or a nerf in disguise

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Zombies: Season 3 / DLC 3 Complete Guide FAQ

Is Totenreich a remake of Call of the Dead or the Diesendra village?

No. Treyarch confirmed all DLC maps are original locations. The lighthouse is a creative choice, not an admission of anything.

What exactly is Zombie Battle mode and is it worth playing regularly?

2–4 player free-for-all where each person fights their own horde. Replayability uncertain, private match supported from day one. An improvement.

Are the Manhattan and New York City maps still happening in future DLC seasons?

The original NYC atomic bomb concept was cancelled. The Japanese volcano map for Takeo is reportedly still in active development for a later season.

How do Ultra Rarity Legacy Weapons work and how do I actually get one?

Rare Mystery Box drops mid-season, stats rivaling Wonder Weapons. Outside Cursed Mode, the box is the only acquisition path.

Who are the Twins and why do they know everything about the Dark Ether storyline?

Two child-like sisters trapped in a Dark Ether Nuketown. Origins unknown. Awareness of entire multiverse history unexplained. Nobody is asking enough questions.
