Black Ops 7 Season 3 launches April 2: Freerun mode returns, 420 vibes are dialed down, Plaza and Gridlock are back, and zombies are getting cold in N
Season 3, continuing this proud tradition, arrives with nine total multiplayer maps, five of which will be playable on launch day. The remaining four appear mid-season during the Reloaded update, which is expected sometime in early May — because the industry has decided that giving players everything at once would be a public health hazard.
The official Call of Duty Community account confirmed Treyarch is working on "something different" for Season 3. Cryptic. Thrilling. Ultimately just Freerun.
Regarding the 420 celebration specifically: Treyarch and the official Call of Duty account have both confirmed that this year's nod to April 20th will be scaled back. No blunt-themed reskins of Nuketown. No filter that makes everything look like you ate an edible and stared at a map. The franchise's long, storied love affair with the stoner holiday — which has included Snoop Dogg, Cheech & Chong, Jay and Silent Bob, and Seth Rogen, because someone in the licensing department has a very specific sense of humor — will be taking a breather in Black Ops 7. Whether this is due to the game's futuristic setting, internal sobriety goals, or simple creative fatigue is unclear. What is clear is that you will not be getting another Blaze Town variant this year.
For context, here is a non-exhaustive look at what the franchise has done with April 20th over the years. Study it. Reflect on it. Move on.

The pattern is instructive. COD's 420 content has historically been most ambitious when the game is mid-cycle and the marketing team needs a reason for people to log back in. Black Ops 7, apparently having delivered enough reasons already, is choosing restraint. Groundbreaking.

This is the headline. Freerun — last seen in Black Ops 3 over a decade ago, where players used wall-running and jetpacks to navigate timed obstacle courses — is returning in Season 3 Reloaded. The mode will feature 10 racers competing to reach the finish line first on a brand-new map called Ascent, which has been designed exclusively for this purpose. It features vertiginous jumps, ten distinct zones, and the kind of precision platforming that will make you realize your movement skills are not as good as you thought they were.
The comparison to Get High from Modern Warfare 3 is obvious, intentional, and slightly undersells the original. Get High was a spiritual successor to Freerun; Freerun returning is technically a prequel becoming a sequel, which Hollywood would greenlight immediately. The key differences: the original Freerun was solo and timer-based. Black Ops 7's version is a 10-player race. No jetpacks this time — the game has wall jumps and omni movement, which the developers have apparently decided is enough to navigate an obstacle course designed to end careers.
A Freerun Event accompanies the mode at mid-season, offering weapon camos as rewards. So yes, you will be humiliated on an obstacle course in exchange for a gun skin. Worth it.
Whether Freerun becomes a permanent fixture or vanishes into the limited-time void remains to be seen. The smart money, given how well-received Get High was in 2023, is that it sticks around. The dumb money is on anything Activision promises will be "permanent."
The dedicated Ascent map — described as having "vertigo-inducing jumps and little room for error" — will live in the multiplayer rotation specifically for this mode. Which means it will also be a map that people try to play incorrectly in standard modes and complain about on Reddit.

No. Scaled back, not abolished. Expect a themed event, some camos, and considerably less Snoop Dogg.
Officially unconfirmed. It launches mid-season with a dedicated event. Assume limited until proven otherwise.
Estimated May 7th, possibly May 14th. No hard date confirmed. Adjust your calendar tentatively.
Nothing confirmed. The futuristic setting and reduced scope make it less likely than prior years.
Separate modes. Freerun is a Black Ops 3 revival. Get High was MW3. Both owe spiritual debts to each other.
