WoW Midnight 80–90 Leveling Guide
Ready to make absolute bank? Our WoW Midnight Skinning guide is live! Master the 1-100 grind, farm rare Voidhide, and dominate the AH.
Skinning is, and has always been, one of the cleanest gold-making professions in World of Warcraft because it requires absolutely zero preparation, zero crafting, and zero waiting — it just requires that something near you is already dead, which in a zone full of void-corrupted predatory wildlife is never a problem. You kill it, you skin it, you list it, you profit. The feedback loop is so tight it would make a behavioral economist weep.
WoW: Midnight brings Skinning into the Quel'Thalas era with three new leather types, a revamped specialization tree built around Bountiful Peeling, a brand-new rare proc that will make raiders desperate and AH campers insufferable, and a set of Void-Infused beast mobs that hit you with a debuff when you skin them because someone at Blizzard decided gathering professions weren't spicy enough.
If you farmed leather in The War Within and think the muscle memory transfers cleanly — it mostly does, but there are enough changes to step on if you're not paying attention. The core loop is identical: kill beast, activate Skinning, receive leather, profit. But the material tier system, rare drops, mob interaction, and specialization branches have all been meaningfully adjusted. Here's what actually changed.

Returning Player Pro Tip The biggest mechanical change is the two-tier quality collapse. You will never see Bronze leather again. Everything is Silver or Gold now, which means Auction House pricing is cleaner and you spend less time cherry-picking your stacks. Also: buy the Epic Flaying Knife early if you plan to farm Elite-tier beasts — standard knives won't work on them.

There are four Skinning trainers in WoW: Midnight and precisely zero reasons to visit more than one of them unless you're an explorer with too much time. The main trainer is in Silvermoon City — a Blood Elf who has been professionally flaying animals since The Burning Crusade and has absolutely no patience for players who ask "can you teach me something else."
Alternative Learning Method If you had Skinning in The War Within and continue into Midnight, you can skip the trainer completely — just skin any beast in a Midnight zone and Midnight Skinning auto-activates. The trainer only exists for characters picking up Skinning fresh, or for players who enjoy talking to NPCs in a city during a void invasion.
Silvermoon City Pro Tip Silvermoon in Midnight is fully rebuilt and Skyriding-enabled. Navigate to Master Skinner once, drop a TomTom waypoint, and never think about trainer location again. He is in the Profession District — same general area as Botanist Nathera if you're running dual-gatherer — so you can knock out both in one trip. Efficiency. You're welcome to World of Warcraft leveling.
Midnight introduces three new leather types and two rare proc materials. Unlike The War Within where leather types were locked to specific zones, all Midnight leather drops from any zone — the density just varies by beast type and biome. Voidhide is the star of the show: every serious Leatherworker, Tailor (for hybrid patterns), and Armor crafter needs it, and it will be priced accordingly on launch week.

Market Tip: The Voidhide Window In the first two weeks of launch, Voidhide will be the most expensive standard leather in the game. Every Leatherworker crafting raid gear and every player chasing Crafting Order gear needs it by the stack. Stack your Toughness Yield and Bountiful Peeling spec for Darkened Stag-type mobs specifically, and farm Eversong's Corrupted Panther circuit on launch week. The price will normalize by week three — but those first two weeks are a gold printer if you're positioned.

Midnight introduces two new mob classifications that matter for Skinning: Void-Infused beasts (glowing, drop Void-Soaked Membrane, apply debuff on skin) and Elite-tier carcasses (the 60–100 skill-up source, require Blue+ knife). All standard beast types still give skill-ups from 1–60. The table below lists the key skinnable mob families per zone and what they prioritize World of Warcraft Character service.

Important: Elite-Tier Mobs Require Blue+ Knife If you approach an Elder Voidcroc, Shadowmane Alpha, or Voidhawk Elder with a Green knife, your Skinning cast will fail with the message "Your blade is not sharp enough to pierce this hide." Get your Blue Reinforced Void-Steel Flayer before attempting these. They are your ONLY source of skill-ups from 60 to 100, so this is non-negotiable.

Skinning in Midnight uses three secondary stats: Swiftness, Toughness Yield, and Perception. They come from your Flaying Knife, accessories, specialization tree, racial bonuses, and consumables. Understanding the priority order is the difference between a skinner who's annoyed by mob interrupts every 30 seconds and one who efficiently harvests corpses like the industrial-grade scavenger this profession deserves.
Community consensus from beta: enough Swiftness to avoid interrupt loss, then everything else into Toughness Yield for maximum leather per corpse. Perception is only valuable if Void-Soaked Membrane is selling for exceptional prices on your server — otherwise it's a World of Warcraft PvP carry you fill last.
|
Stat |
What It Does |
Priority |
Best Source |
|
Swiftness |
Reduces Skinning cast time — faster knife animation, fewer mob interrupts mid-skin |
High — get enough to avoid interrupts |
Spec (Flaying), Knife enchant, consumables (Thalassian Tallow, Darkmoon Firewater) |
|
Toughness Yield |
Procs extra leather from each carcass — the primary gold-per-hour multiplier |
Very High — primary income driver |
Spec (Bountiful Peeling, Tracker's Instinct), Knife stats, accessories |
|
Perception |
Increases chance of Void-Soaked Membrane proc on Void-Infused carcasses — does NOT affect base proc rate |
Low-Medium — valuable only if Membrane price is high |
Spec (Void Attunement sub-spec), accessories |
Stat Formula: In zones with high mob density (Zul'Aman, Harandar, Voidstorm), get enough Swiftness from consumables to complete your skin before mobs can interrupt, then dump everything else into Toughness Yield. Priority is: Comfortable Swiftness → Max Toughness Yield → Perception last. Do not deviate from this order unless Void-Soaked Membrane is 10,000g+ on your server.
The Midnight Skinning specialization tree has three branches: Bountiful Peeling, Flaying, and Void Attunement. The structure mirrors The War Within's tree but with adjusted branch names and Midnight-specific unlocks. Knowledge Points come from weekly gathering drops, trainer quests, treatises, Darkmoon Faire, and one-time zone treasures. The most important first decision: do you have a Worgen (or access to the racial that speeds skinning) already? If yes, skip Flaying's early nodes and go straight to Bountiful Peeling. If not, invest 20–40 points in Flaying first to reduce cast time to an interrupt-safe threshold.

Sub-Spec Priority: Check Your AH Every beast type in Midnight can be found across all zones, so your per-beast sub-specialization in Bountiful Peeling should target whichever leather is selling for the most on your server's Auction House — not a predetermined list. Check AH prices on launch day and spec into the top-selling leather type. This decision is worth real gold every single World of Warcraft delve carry.
Void-Infused beasts are visually glowing or distorted versions of standard Midnight beast families. They drop bonus materials — specifically Void-Soaked Membrane procs and extra leather — but applying your knife to one hits you with a shadow or light debuff (depending on zone). They're the carrot-and-stick mechanic of Midnight Skinning, and like all carrot-and-stick mechanics, some players love them and some players wonder why gathering needed a punishment mechanic.
When you skin your first Void-Infused beast, you automatically learn the Overflense ability. This has a 12-hour cooldown that refreshes by 30 minutes every time you skin any Midnight beast. At roughly 24 skins per full reset, active farmers will have this available frequently. The Overflense ability gives a powerful bonus — larger yield, debuff cleanse on self, or brief damage immunity — when used immediately after skinning a Void-Infused carcass.

Overflense Location Tip The Overflense ability is in your General spellbook tab — not in the Profession tab. If you can't find it after skinning your first Void-Infused beast, open your spellbook, click General, and scroll. It should be there automatically. If you've spent ten minutes looking for it: now you know.

Midnight Skinning has a max skill of 100, divided into three practical brackets. The first 60 points come from any standard beast mob in any zone — there's no trick, you just skin things. The final 40 points are where most players rage-quit, because only Elite-tier carcasses give skill-ups past 60, which requires a Blue+ Flaying Knife and a willingness to fight through elite mob density. Plan for this wall. World of Warcraft achievement service is coming.
|
Skill Range |
What Gives Skill-Ups |
Strategy |
|
1–30 |
All beast mobs — everything works; small beasts included |
Start in Eversong Woods. Skin everything. Shadow Hares, wolves, stags — all valid. Don't overthink it. |
|
30–60 |
Ashfang Wolves, Darkened Stags, Corrupted Panthers, Voidcrocs — small beasts grey out around 30 |
Ignore Shadow Hares and tiny fauna. Focus on medium and large beast mobs. Eversong or Zul'Aman edges. Skin your kill quest mobs while leveling your character. |
|
60–100 |
Only Elite-Tier carcasses — Elder Voidcroc, Shadowmane Alpha, Voidhawk Elder, and equivalents. Standard beasts are all grey. |
Equip Blue+ Flaying Knife. Run Elite-tier beast circuits in Harandar (Elder Voidcroc) or Voidstorm ridges (Voidhawk Elder). These mobs are harder to kill but spawn on regular timers. Group if needed on launch week. |
The 60–100 Wall: Prepare Now The moment your standard beast skins grey out at 60, a player without a Blue knife is completely stuck. Elite-tier carcasses will say "requires a sharper blade" and lock you out entirely. Get your Blue Reinforced Void-Steel Flayer crafted before you hit 55 — don't wait until you're already at the wall with your progression blocked.
Eversong Woods is simultaneously the best zone for learning Skinning and one of the strongest endgame farming zones for the whole expansion. The terrain is gentle, the beast spawns are dense and consistent, mob density around corpses is forgiving, and the loop route along the forest edges is essentially a meditation circuit with a profit margin. If you're tired, unoptimized, or don't want to deal with elite mechanics, Eversong is where you come to de-stress and print leather.
Zul'Aman is where Midnight skinners discover that some corpses are surrounded by other things that want to kill you. The Void-Tainted Raptors and Corrupted Panthers here drop excellent Voidhide, but the jungle interior has aggressive mob density that will interrupt your skinning if you're not managing positioning. The outer jungle edges are significantly safer than the interior ruins areas — run the treeline, not the center.
Zul'Aman Warning The elite Shadowmane Alpha packs that roam Zul'Aman's interior can and will patrol through your skinning position and aggro mid-cast. Know the patrol routes before settling into a farm circuit. The outer treeline avoids most of them. The interior does not.
Harandar is an ancient jungle zone where the terrain is a vertical obstacle course of mushroom caps, exposed roots, elevated structures, and every mob in the game decided this was their home. It also has the best Elite-tier beast density in the expansion — the Elder Voidcroc and Lightbound Stag populations here are the densest of any zone, making Harandar the primary destination for 60–100 skill-ups and Gold-quality leather farming. Getting there is worth it. The experience of getting there is not fun.
Voidstorm is the end-stage Midnight zone actively being consumed by the Void, with terrain that looks like a fever dream and mob presence at every corpse you try to skin. It has the highest Primal Void Scales density and the best Voidhawk Elder population for Dusk Down Feather farming — and that's exactly why you'll need burst-session discipline to actually benefit from it. Marathon sessions in Voidstorm almost always turn into twenty minutes of farming and forty minutes of respawn clearing. Go in, skin your circuit, leave. Repeat.
Knowledge Points are the long-term progression currency of Midnight Skinning specialization. Unlike skill, which comes from skinning beasts, KP comes from weekly activities, one-time treasures, and monthly events. Maximizing KP acquisition — especially in the first two weeks — is what separates a fully specced skinner from someone still farming without the Bountiful Peeling unlock wondering why their leather stacks per hour are disappointingly small.
First Blood (skin 20x small beasts), The Hunter's Toll (skin 5x Voidcroc and 2x Corrupted Panthers), Void Trophies (collect 3x Void-Infused beast skins), and Standard Haul (skin 10x standard beasts and collect 5x Etherweave Leather). Each rewards the Thalassian Skinner's Notes (+3 Midnight Skinning Knowledge).

Let's not pretend this section is about anything other than the Auction House. Skinning is one of the cleanest gold-making professions in WoW: Midnight because the supply chain is brutally simple — you kill things that were going to die anyway, you remove their skin, you list it. No cooldowns. No crafting queues. No transmute timers. The gold-making window per session is purely determined by your leather-per-hour rate and what the AH is paying that day.

Timeframe |
Best Materials to Sell |
Why |
Strategy |
|
Launch Week |
Voidhide (Gold), Void-Soaked Membrane, Primal Void Scales |
Maximum prices; Leatherworkers buying everything for Crafting Orders and raid prep |
Farm 6–8 hours, list in stacks of 5 and 20; undercut minimally; hold Membranes and list individually |
|
First Month |
Voidhide, Primal Void Scales (raid mat); Void-Soaked Membrane |
Raid demand stabilizes; tier set crafting and weapon crafting create sustained need |
Identify server's most-demanded leather; specialize Bountiful Peeling into that type |
|
Mid-Expansion |
Void-Soaked Membrane (individual); Gold Quality leather only |
Standard leather prices deflate as supply catches up; rares hold value longer |
Focus on Gold Quality yields from Toughness Yield spec; sell Membranes individually — never in stacks |
|
Late Expansion |
Void-Soaked Membrane; Shard of Condensed Void from Elite carcasses |
Raw leather demand drops; rares and crafting-required mats retain value through the tier |
Consider pairing with Leatherworking alt to convert leather into crafted gear at better margins |
Void-Soaked Membrane is the Midnight equivalent of Awakened Order and Mote of Pure Void — the rare proc that makes every Leatherworker scramble and every Skinner feel briefly important. It does not drop from standard beasts at all: it only procs from skinning Void-Infused carcasses (Voidbound Nightstalker in Eversong and Voidstorm; Lightbound Stag in Harandar), with drop rate influenced by your Perception stat and Void Attunement specialization.
The combination of Toughness Yield (more leather per kill) and Bountiful Peeling into Void-Infused beast sub-spec (more Membrane procs) is how you extract maximum gold per farm session. If Membrane prices are 500g+ individually — and at launch they absolutely will be — the math tilts heavily in favor of running Void-Infused circuits over standard beast farming.
AH Strategy: Never Stack Void-Soaked Membrane List Void-Soaked Membranes individually, not in stacks. Leatherworkers buying for rare recipes often only need 1–3 at a time and will pay full individual price rather than buy a stack of 10. Stacking them enables buyers to undercut you by listing your own stack back at a discount. Individual listings are always the correct play for rare mats in the first month of an World of Warcraft reputation boost.
Skinning is a gathering profession and generates raw materials and gold but doesn't craft. To extract maximum value from your leather, you pair it with a crafting profession — on the same character or a dedicated alt. The options below are ranked by gold-making potential and synergy. Pick one and commit. Switching professions mid-expansion costs money, time, and Artisan Moxie currency you could have spent on KP.
|
Combo |
Synergy |
Complexity |
Best For |
|
Skinning + Leatherworking |
Direct: skins → leather → raid gear, armor kits, embellishments → all expansion revenue |
Medium — requires managing Crafting Orders and two KP trees |
Self-sufficiency; steady armor kit and gear gold throughout the expansion |
|
Skinning + Mining |
Pure double-gathering; zero crafting required; maximum raw mat volume |
Very Low — kill things, pick up ore, sell everything |
Launch-week dominance; maximum raw gold with zero setup; optimal for casual or time-limited players |
|
Skinning + Tailoring |
Indirect: some Tailoring patterns use leather-adjacent mats; Voidhide enters select cloth hybrid recipes |
Medium — requires checking which Tailoring recipes consume Skinning mats in current tier |
Niche; only valuable if specific leather-consuming Tailoring recipes are high-margin on your server |
|
Skinning Only (AH) |
Raw leather to AH in bulk; simplest possible gameplay loop |
Lowest — just farm and list |
Casual players; early expansion when raw mat prices are high enough that conversion isn't worth it |
Race choice has a real, measurable impact on Skinning efficiency. The differences below are not cosmetic — they directly affect your skins per hour and KP spending requirements. Here are your options ranked, with appropriate lack of sympathy for the races that didn't make the top of the list.
|
Race |
Racial Bonus |
Best For |
|
Worgen |
Running Wild: +15 Skinning skill; instant movement speed when skinning (built-in interrupt resistance) |
Pure Skinning; saves 40 KP that non-Worgen must spend in Flaying tree |
|
Tauren |
Cultivation: Not a Skinning bonus — but Nature resistance and health bonuses make survivability better in Harandar and Voidstorm |
Tank-spec Skinners; Harandar circuit farming with elite beasts |
|
Highmountain Tauren |
+15 Skinning skill (same as Worgen) — yes, Blizzard gave both; pick based on faction and class options |
Alliance players stuck with Worgen vs Horde wanting the same advantage on Tauren models |
|
Any Other Race |
No relevant Skinning bonus |
Still perfectly viable — compensate with more KP in Flaying tree and consumables |
Worgen / Highmountain Tauren Advantage Explained Both races get +15 Skinning skill and interrupt resistance equivalent to investing 20–40 KP in the Flaying tree. This means a Worgen or Highmountain Tauren Skinner can skip the first branch of Flaying entirely and put those 40 KP directly into Bountiful Peeling, which is a permanent, every-session advantage over every other race. If you're rolling a Skinning main and you care about optimization, this decision is worth about 40 free Knowledge Points of advantage over the World of Warcraft mounts.

Master Skinner Vaenras is located in the Profession District of rebuilt Silvermoon City for all your training needs.
You absolutely must equip a Blue or Epic Flaying Knife to successfully skin Elite-tier carcasses past level sixty.
Voidhide is highly demanded by crafters for raid gear, making it the most expensive standard leather during launch.
Stack the Swiftness stat using knife enchants, Thalassian Tallow, and Darkmoon Firewater to skin faster than mob attacks.
Overflense grants a powerful yield bonus, cleanses debuffs, or gives brief immunity after you skin a Void-Infused carcass.
