WoW Midnight Fishing Guide 1–300

Congratulations. The Void is consuming Quel'Thalas, Xal'atath is doing something unspeakable with the Sunwell, Blood Elves are having the worst week of their cosmically cursed lives, and you — you visionary — have decided the most important thing to do right now is stand next to a pond in Eversong Woods and wait for a bobber to move. We respect this. We truly do. The world is ending, and you've found inner peace in the form of a fishing rod.

Fishing in Midnight is simple in concept — cast, wait, click bobber, repeat until your eyes glaze over — but there's enough depth here (pun absolutely intended) to separate the people who max this in a week from the people who hit 200 skill and give up because they keep catching grey trash. This guide covers everything: the trainer, every fish, every pool type, the Grand Line grind, lure recipes, Engineering rods, zone skill brackets, gold-making strategy, and the eternal question of whether Perception actually does anything for Fishing (spoiler: probably not, but keep reading).

Get to Silvermoon, learn from Drathen, fish pools in Eversong for the first 270 levels, switch to open-water AFK fishing if you're sane, and prioritize Finesse for bulk fish farming. Rush the Midnight Angler's Grand Line early since it doubles your treasure drops, and don't ignore Viscous Void pools in Voidstorm — Null Voidfish are valuable because Alchemists need them for a transmute, and Skinners need Ominous Octopus for Majestic Voidstorm Lures. Stack your sell orders before the market crashes. The usual.

  • Why is there no open water in Voidstorm and why does that matter?
  • Why does fishing Blood Hunter in Zul'Aman spawn something that wants to eat you?
  • Why does a fishing line take 10,000 pieces to build? Does Perception matter for Fishing at all?
  • What fish do Skinners actually need?

And most importantly: how fast can you realistically hit 300 with a World of Warcraft reputation help?

What Changed from The War Within

If you're coming from TWW thinking you can coast on muscle memory alone, there are a few things that will genuinely surprise you on Day 1. The core loop is the same — cast, catch, sell — but there are enough new systems to warrant actually reading this section.

Fishing Trainer Location: The One Place You Need to Know

There is exactly one thing you need to do before you start fishing in Midnight: go to Silvermoon City and learn from Drathen. He's standing by the large pond in the center of the city. This isn't a long journey of self-discovery — it's a twenty-second flight to a pond. Do it before anything else.

Trainer

Race

Location

Drathen

Blood Elf

Large Pond, Silvermoon City

Right next to Drathen is a Fishing Supply vendor (sitting by the water, on the left if you're facing Drathen). Buy the Angler's Guide from her immediately. This teaches you to track fishing pools on your minimap — without it, you'll be flying around blind wondering why everyone else seems to find pools so easily. It costs almost nothing. There is no reason not to buy it.

Returning from TWW? If you had Fishing in The War Within and fly into a Midnight zone, you may automatically get a skill-up prompt. If not, just visit Drathen and he'll bring you up to speed. Either way, it takes less than 60 seconds.

Track Fishing Pools on Your Minimap

After buying the Angler's Guide, learn it from your inventory. This enables the Find Fish tracking ability on your minimap — pools appear as small fish icons as you fly over a zone. Essential. Non-negotiable. Worth the two copper it costs.

Note: Oceanic Vortex pools in Voidstorm do not show up with Find Fish tracking, which is extremely annoying and may be a bug. You'll need to visually scan for the bubbles while flying over Voidstorm at low altitude.

Zone Skill Requirements

Each zone has a minimum recommended Fishing skill. The game will still let you fish lower-skill zones at higher skill (obviously), and you can theoretically fish anywhere at skill 1, but you'll catch mostly grey junk for most of the leveling range. The practical thresholds matter more than the World of Warcraft mount service:

Eversong Woods

Skill 1+ | Recommended Start

Best starting zone. Open water and plenty of pools. Grey trash until ~220, but pool fishing still gives valuable fish. Best for leveling and AFK grinding.

Arcane Wyrmfish Lynxfish Sin'dorei Swarmer Eversong Trout (Rare) Sunwell Fish

Zul'Aman

Skill 100+ Required. Home of Gore Guppy, Lucky Loa, and Blood Hunter. Warning: Blood Hunter fish spawn hostile spirits. Craft an Amani Angler's Ward if you want peace and quiet.

Gore Guppy Blood Hunter Lucky Loa (Rare) Fungalskin Pike

Harandar

Skill 225+ Required. Bloomtail Minnow exclusive zone. Best pools for Blossoming Torrent. High skill requirement — don't try to rush it. Useful mid-expansion when you need specific Harandar fish.

Bloomtail Minnow Fungalskin Pike Tender Lumifin Arcane Wyrmfish

Voidstorm

Skill 300 Required. No open water. Oceanic Vortex pools only — spawn randomly, don't show on minimap. Best zone for Null Voidfish and Ominous Octopus. Required for max-skill fishing.

Null Voidfish (Rare) Ominous Octopus (Rare) Hollow Grouper (Rare) Shimmersiren Warping Wise (Rare)

The official "skill requirement" for zones is mostly decorative. What actually matters: you'll get useful fish from pools starting around skill 1; you stop getting grey trash in open water around 220; and grey stops completely in open water around 290. Oceanic Vortex pools in Voidstorm still drop grey items even at 300. Classic Blizzard.

Method 1: Pool Fishing (Faster, More Valuable)

Enable Find Fish tracking, fly around Eversong Woods or Zul'Aman, and fish every pool you see. Pool fish give skill-ups at all levels and consistently drop the non-grey fish you can actually sell. This is the right call if you're trying to make gold while leveling. Fly between pools — don't stand in one spot. You'll hit 300 faster and have an inventory worth posting on the AH.

At 100 skill, add Zul'Aman to your route. At 225, Harandar opens up. At 300, unlock Voidstorm Oceanic Vortex pools.

Method 2: AFK Open-Water Fishing (Slower, Easier)

Park yourself near Drathen's pond in Silvermoon City or anywhere in Eversong. Install the Better Fishing addon (Curseforge), bind keys for cast and interact, then listen for the splash sound while watching something else. You get mostly grey trash until ~220, but this method is genuinely brain-off. Expect roughly 2–3 hours to reach 300 this way. The fish you catch won't be worth much, but you'll hit max skill and can then go farm properly.

Best of both worlds: Pool fish in Eversong until 270. At that point, open-water fishing is viable, and you can AFK the last 30 skill points anywhere while catching actual fish. Efficient up front, lazy to finish.

Zone-by-Zone Fishing Guide

Eversong Woods — The Starter Zone That Never Gets Old

Eversong is your home for the first 270+ points of Midnight Fishing. The terrain is open, pools are plentiful, there's actual open water to AFK in, and you can fly circuits of the map in a few minutes picking up every pool you find. It's also where the Fishing trainer lives, so you're already here anyway.

For pool fishing, fly sweeping loops around the outer edges of the zone where pools cluster. Sunwell Swarm and Bubbling Bloom pools are your primary targets — Eversong Trout (Rare) and Sunwell Fish drop here and are worth real gold, especially early in the expansion. If you're doing Skinning on an alt, every Arcane Wyrmfish and Lynxfish you fish up here feeds into the Majestic Eversong Lure recipe.

Best pools here: Sunwell Swarm, Bubbling Bloom, Blossoming Torrent, Bloom Swarm

Zul'Aman — Blood, Spirits, and Gore Guppies

You need 100 Fishing skill to fish in Zul'Aman, which you'll have well before you exhaust Eversong. The zone is notable for two things: it's the primary source of Gore Guppy (needed for the Majestic Zul'Aman Skinning Lure, so it'll have consistent demand), and it's where Blood Hunter fish spawn hostile Blood Hunter Spirits when you catch them. If you don't want a ghost shaman trying to kill you every few minutes, craft an Amani Angler's Ward — it prevents spirit spawns for 30 minutes.

Lucky Loa is the rare catch here, exclusively from Obscured School and Surface Ripple pools. It's a Rare-quality fish and will have market value if there are buyers.

Best pools here: Hunter Surge (Gore Guppy, Blood Hunter), Surface Ripple, Obscured School

Harandar — Plants, Fungi, and Skill 225

Harandar requires 225 Fishing to enter properly. It's the exclusive zone for Bloomtail Minnow and Tender Lumifin — both used in the Majestic Harandar Skinning Lure, which means steady demand from Skinners. The Blossoming Torrent pool type spawns here and is one of the better treasure pool types for drops.

Harandar isn't a zone you'll spend most of your time in, but it's essential for completing the full fish roster and for farming specific Skinner-demand fish mid-expansion.

Best pools here: Blossoming Torrent (Tender Lumifin), Lashing Waves, Obscured School

Voidstorm — The Zone That Hates You

Voidstorm requires 300 Fishing and has no open water. You fish exclusively from Oceanic Vortex bubbles that spawn randomly around the zone, don't appear on your minimap with Find Fish, and require you to fly at low altitude scanning for visual bubbles. It's annoying. The loot is worth it.

Oceanic Vortex is the only reliable way to catch Null Voidfish, Ominous Octopus, Hollow Grouper, and Warping Wise — all Rare-quality fish exclusive to Voidstorm. Null Voidfish is critical for the Alchemy School of Gems transmute. Ominous Octopus feeds the Majestic Voidstorm Skinning Lure. Both will have sustained demand all expansion.

Pro tip from a beta comment: there are acidic pools in northern Voidstorm near the Voidscar Arena that have the same loot table as Oceanic Vortex. You can't stand in them (they damage you), but they're accessible and may be less crowded than natural vortex spawns.

Best pools here: Oceanic Vortex, Viscous Void

Voidstorm & Oceanic Vortex: Special Rules Apply

Voidstorm gets its own section because it's genuinely different from every other fishing zone in Midnight. There is no open water. Period. If you try to cast into the void-corrupted landscape, nothing happens. Your only option is Oceanic Vortex bubble pools, which:

  • Spawn randomly throughout Voidstorm
  • Do not appear on the minimap with Find Fish tracking
  • Require visual scanning at low altitude to find
  • Last significantly longer than normal pools
  • Have a higher chance to drop Null Voidfish and Ominous Octopus than any other pool

Alternative: Acidic pools in northern Voidstorm (Voidscar Arena area) have the same loot table as Oceanic Vortex. They deal damage while you stand in them, but they're fishable and will be less contested. If Oceanic Vortex spots are overcrowded on your server at launch, these are your backup.

For max-efficiency Voidstorm fishing, fly patrol routes at 200–300 feet altitude in slow circles. When you spot bubbles, land, fish until the pool despawns, then resume patrol. The pools last long enough to get multiple casts in. Don't try to speed-run this zone — it's a patience check, not a speed check.

Patient Treasure Chests

While fishing, you'll occasionally see a Patient Treasure chest spawn nearby on the shore. These are a passive bonus from extended fishing sessions — the longer you fish, the more chests you'll see. They can contain An Angler's Deep Dive (+10 skill), Bloomline and Glimmerline fragments for the Grand Line, cosmetics, and lure recipes. Always loot these when you see them. They're basically the game rewarding you for your patience and poor life choices.

Fishing Rods (Crafted by Engineers)

Fishing rods in Midnight are crafted by Engineers, not acquired from vendors or drops. There are three tiers: Green (tradeable), Blue and Epic (both Bind on Pickup — you need a Crafting Order). The epic rod requires Fused Vitality, which you buy with the weekly event currency — no profession required.

Fused Vitality: Buy 20x with weekly event currency. You don't need Herbalism, Engineering, or any other profession. Just participate in the weekly event and stockpile. The epic rod is achievable by any character willing to do weeklies.

Majestic Fin is a Skinning drop from Renowned Beasts summoned by Skinning Lures — and Skinning Lures are partially made from fish. So to get the epic fishing rod, you need a Skinner to farm Majestic Fins, and Skinners need your fish to make lures to summon the beasts that drop Majestic Fins. The ecosystem is self-referential in a way that should impress you or infuriate you, depending on your mood.

Fishing Lure Recipes (Now Made by Fishers)

In Midnight, Fishing Lures are crafted by Fishers themselves — a change from previous expansions where Skinners made them. All recipes are Bind on Pickup and drop from Careless Cargo and Lost Treasures pools. Fish treasure pools aggressively early in the expansion to collect these.

Lures increase your chance of catching a specific fish for 30 minutes. The Amani Angler's Ward isn't technically a lure but is crafted through the same system.

Midnight Angler's Grand Line: The Ultimate Fishing Upgrade

The Midnight Angler's Grand Line is the expansion's equivalent of TWW's Weaverline — a fishing line that, once crafted and equipped, doubles your treasure drops. This is significant. Treasure drops include fishing line fragments (accelerating future alts), Patient Treasure spawns, An Angler's Deep Dive (+10 skill) items, lure recipes, and Careless Cargo pool loot. Double all of that. Worth the grind.

Unlike rods, the Grand Line requires no profession to craft — just time and patience (or gold, since every tier is tradeable on the AH). It's built from two separate chains: the Bloomline and the Glimmerline, which are then merged.

Bloomline Chain100x Shredded Bloomline → 1x Stranded Bloomline +19 more 20x Stranded Bloomline → 1x Weak Bloomline +4 more 5x Weak Bloomline  → Angler's Bloomline

Total: 100,000x Shredded Bloomline fragments (or buy at various stages on AH)

Glimmerline Chain100x Shredded Glimmerline → 1x Stranded Glimmerline +19 more 20x Stranded  Glimmerline → 1x Weak Glimmerline +19 more 20x Weak Glimmerline → Angler's Glimmerline

Total: 40,000x Shredded Glimmerline fragments (note: longer Weak tier than Bloomline)

Final Combine1x Angler's Bloomline + 1x Angler's Glimmerline → Midnight Angler's Grand Line

AH Strategy: All tiers of both chains are tradeable on the Auction House. Early in the expansion, Shredded fragments will be cheap because casual fishers generate them passively and don't know what they're worth yet. Buy them in bulk. The higher tiers (Weak, Angler's) will be more expensive — potentially worth crafting to that tier yourself and selling to impatient players. The Grand Line itself will have high demand since every serious fisher wants the double treasure bonus.

The Grand Line was not fully functional during beta testing. Confirm it works correctly at launch before making financial decisions based on its value. Blizzard's relationship with launch-day functionality is, historically, complicated.

Mandatory

Higher skill = less grey trash. Using An Angler's Deep Dive (+10) items from Patient Treasure chests accelerates this. Priority on early skill acquisition.

The bottom line: stack Finesse for bulk fishing, ignore Perception unless someone provides actual data showing it matters (as of current testing, no one has). Race doesn't meaningfully affect Fishing. Earthen get the Hyper Productive racial for extra fish occasionally; Dracthyr have minor Perception — neither is worth changing your main for.

Gear & Consumables

Fishing only has one gear slot: your fishing rod. There are no accessories or secondary slots like Herbalism. Gear priority is therefore simple: get the best rod you can access and use consumables to supplement skill early in the leveling process.

Both feasts have herb-based alternatives, so your fish won't be the only source — but if herb prices spike or the herb version is more expensive on your server, fish feasts may corner the market. Watch AH prices for both versions and adjust your farming target accordingly.

Skinning Majestic Lures (Fish → Lure → Beast → Majestic Skin/Fin/Claw)

This is where fishing has its most important cross-profession value. Skinners need fish-based lures to summon Renowned Beasts that drop Majestic Hide, Majestic Fin, and Majestic Claw — the high-end Skinning reagents for epic leatherworking. There are no herb alternatives here. Skinners need your fish.

Alchemy: School of Gems Transmute

Alchemists can transmute fish into gems using School of Gems. The transmute costs: 3x Stabilized Derivate, 12x Fungalskin Pike, 8x Null Voidfish, 5x Harandar Peridot, 5x Amani Lapis. This creates significant baseline demand for both Fungalskin Pike and Null Voidfish that persists throughout the expansion as Alchemists cycle their transmute cooldowns.

Gold Making with Fishing

Let's be direct: Fishing is not the highest gold-per-hour profession in Midnight. Herbalism and Mining will beat it on raw throughput. But Fishing has something those professions don't: it's the only source of certain fish that Skinners, Cooks, and Alchemists need indefinitely. There's no alternative supply. You own the market by default. This is the positioning you want.

Timeframe

Best Fish to Sell

Why

Launch Week

Everything; especially Null Voidfish, Ominous Octopus, Eversong Trout

Skinners desperately need lure mats; Cooks need feast fish; Alchemists need transmute fish

First Month

Null Voidfish, Ominous Octopus, Fungalskin Pike, Eversong Trout

Steady Skinner lure demand; Alchemy transmute cycling; raid feast demand

Mid-Expansion

Null Voidfish, Ominous Octopus only

Common fish prices deflate; Voidstorm fish remain scarce

Late Expansion

Check AH — may flip to Eversong Trout for feasts if fish feast > herb feast

Market stabilizes; niche fish remain valuable; feasts stay relevant all expansion

The Single Best Gold Move: Fish Viscous Void and Oceanic Vortex pools in Voidstorm at launch. Null Voidfish and Ominous Octopus will be at peak price while Skinners are desperate to farm Majestic materials, and every Alchemist wants to start their School of Gems transmute ASAP. These fish have no alternative source. Stack them, hold a day or two, sell into the demand spike.

WoW Midnight Fishing Guide 1–300 FAQ

Why is there no open water in Voidstorm and why does that matter?

Voidstorm only features Oceanic Vortex bubble pools. You must fly low to spot them, but they drop the most valuable and exclusive rare fish.

Why does fishing Blood Hunter in Zul'Aman spawn something that wants to eat you?

Catching Blood Hunters triggers hostile spirit spawns. You will need to craft an Amani Angler's Ward to fish peacefully without getting attacked constantly.

Why does a fishing line take 10,000 pieces to build?

The Midnight Angler's Grand Line doubles your treasure drops. Crafting it requires massive fragment grinds, making it an ultimate, highly rewarding long-term investment.

Does Perception matter for Fishing at all?

As of current testing, Perception does absolutely nothing for fishing. You should stack Finesse instead to maximize your bulk fish farming and profits.

What fish do Skinners actually need?

Skinners desperately need Arcane Wyrmfish, Gore Guppies, Fungalskin Pike, and Ominous Octopuses to craft lures that summon beasts dropping highly valuable Majestic materials.

How fast can you realistically hit 300?

If you use the open-water AFK method, expect it to take roughly two to three hours to reach max skill while catching mostly trash.
