WoW Midnight Retribution Paladin Guide

Retribution Paladin in Midnight is a melee DPS specialization built around one glorious, exhausting loop: generate Holy Power, then spend it on things that hurt. The spec has two Hero Talent trees: Templar and Herald of the Sun: and two generator-choice mechanics in Crusading Strikes vs. Templar Strikes. Midnight also introduced the new Apex Talent system. Your Apex Talent is Light Within. Yes, it actually matters. No, you don't get to ignore it. How to play Retribution Paladin in WoW Midnight is simultaneously the easiest and most punishing thing in the game: the buttons are simple; the cooldown alignment is not.

Retribution Paladin Midnight expansion is classified as a burst-oriented melee/ranged hybrid. It has some of the best utility in the game, exceptional burst damage during Avenging Wrath, and the defensive toolkit of a class that clearly annoyed a developer at some point in design. It is currently considered a solid B-tier pick overall, with higher ceilings in coordinated environments where your burst cooldowns can be actually aligned with something useful.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

Weaknesses

Exceptional burst window damage under Avenging Wrath

All damage substantially worse outside said burst window

Unmatched party utility (Auras, Blessings, LoH)

Cooldown-dependent to a degree that punishes improvisation

Strong self-sustain via Lay on Hands and defensives

Holy Power overcapping will ruin your parse and your evening

Good 2-target cleave in Templar builds

Mastery: Highlord's Judgment rework helps but was weak for years: muscle memory is a liability

Immunity via Divine Shield remains one of the best survival tools in the game

Melee range requirement in an expansion full of things that want to be in melee range to kill you specifically

Retribution Paladin Midnight Expansion Changes

Before diving into this WoW Midnight Retribution Paladin guide, let's address what Midnight actually did to you. Midnight set out to reduce button bloat across most specs. Retribution, in Blizzard's infinite wisdom, was "hardly affected" by this purge: which means your kit is mostly intact, but the things that changed changed enough to humiliate anyone who queued into a +10 on day one assuming muscle memory would cover it.

The most significant addition is the Apex Talent system. You now allocate 4 talent points into Light Within, Retribution's Apex talent, which dramatically amplifies your Avenging Wrath windows and your Art of War proc interactions. Notable ability-level changes include:

  • Crusading Strikes redesigned in Midnight: Crusader Strike replaces auto-attacks, dealing Physical damage, but you auto-attack 35% slower (was 50% in 12.0.0, improved in 12.0.1). Holy Power generation is now 1 per 2nd attack. This is passive income. Treat it accordingly.
  • Execution Sentence redesigned: now an AoE burst opener + delayed hammer mechanic on a 1-minute cooldown. After 10 seconds, your primary target takes 10% of all Holy damage you dealt to initial targets during the window. This is not a cleave throwaway. Use your brain.
  • Mastery: Highlord's Judgment reworked. Judgment now buffs your spenders AND has a chance to proc bonus Holy damage to your main target. Mastery is no longer the stat you feel guilty taking.
  • Repentance removed. Blinding Light merged with Searing Glare. Several defensive abilities consolidated. You lost some things. Whether those things were things you were actually pressing is a question only your logs can answer.
  • All ability damage reduced by 11% globally, auto-attack damage increased by 300% (does not affect Crusading Strikes), Hammer of Wrath damage increased by 30%.

WoW Midnight Retribution Paladin Talent Builds

Retribution Paladin Midnight expansion gives you two Hero Talent trees and two generator-mode choices. Combined, that's four meaningful build archetypes. You will read all of them and then pick the one that was already popular on Wowhead. That's fine. This guide exists to explain why.

Hero Talent Trees

Hero Tree

Identity

Best For

Note

Templar

Gains Hammer of Light after Wake of Ashes. Passive Empyrean Hammers fly around hitting things. AoE damage, Divine Hammer, pure burst.

Mythic+, AoE-heavy raid fights, arenas with a kill mentality

Recommended

Herald of the Sun

Procs Dawnlights on Wake of Ashes, strong DoT pressure, Hammer of Wrath amplified via Walk Into Light, sustained damage oriented.

Single-target raid, sustained pressure PvP, when you hate burst windows and want consistent output

Alternative

WoW Midnight Retribution Paladin talent builds are not as complicated as people on the forums pretend they are. Templar + Crusading Strikes is the default. If you are running Herald of the Sun, swap to Templar Strikes. These are not controversial opinions: they are what the data says and also what your eyes will tell you after your first full parse.

Retribution Paladin Spellslinger Build Midnight / Frostfire Build Comparison

Retribution Paladin has no Spellslinger or Frostfire builds: those are Mage Hero Talent trees and have no bearing on your character. If you arrived at this guide looking for a Retribution Paladin Spellslinger build Midnight or a Retribution Paladin Frostfire build WoW Midnight, you either mixed up your tabs or are testing whether the guide author is paying attention. The answer to both is: yes and yes.

Apex Talent: Light Within

The Apex Talent system is new in Midnight and extends your Spec Talent Tree. You allocate 4 points total into Light Within. Each point does something. All four points combined make your burst window significantly less embarrassing. Here is what you are investing in:

Rank

Points

Effect

Priority

Rank 1

1 point

Blade of Justice damage increased by 150% when Art of War has procced. This is the reason you stop ignoring Art of War procs.

Immediate

Rank 2

2–3 points

Avenging Wrath increases Final Verdict and Divine Storm damage by a total of 20%. Your spenders hit harder when wings are up. Shocking.

Required

Rank 3

4th point

Blade of Justice now deals Holy damage in a frontal cone while you have an Art of War proc. This is unexpected AoE from a spec not known for frontal cones.

Required

Max all 4 ranks. There is no version of the Retribution Paladin Midnight expansion where you skip Light Within and feel good about yourself afterward. Art of War proc tracking is no longer optional theology; it is required reading for your rotation.

WoW Midnight Retribution Paladin Raid Rotation & Single Target Priority

Retribution Paladin single target priority Midnight is a priority system, not a fixed rotation. You do not press buttons in a memorized sequence: you press the highest-priority available button at all times. This is a concept that sounds simple right up until your Execution Sentence expires without you spending a single Holy Power during it. At which point no guide can help you. Only self-reflection can.

Single-Target Priority (Templar Build)

  1. Avenging Wrath: on cooldown, first. Everything else feeds into this window.
  2. Execution Sentence: use before other burst cooldowns; Avenging Wrath does not buff it, but your AoE damage during its window does scale its final hit.
  3. Hammer of Light: Templar's primary spender. Use it. Don't hoard it like it owes you something.
  4. Final Verdict at 5 Holy Power: your primary Holy Power spender on single target.
  5. Wake of Ashes: on cooldown to trigger Radiant Glory / Hammer of Light availability. Never sit on this.
  6. Divine Toll: on cooldown; generates Holy Power, casts 5 Judgments simultaneously.
  7. Hammer of Wrath with Art of War proc: Art of War resets BoJ; do not let the window expire while pressing something lower-priority.
  8. Blade of Justice with Art of War proc: With Light Within Rank 1, this hits for an embarrassing amount during proc windows.
  9. Final Verdict: non-proc filler spender.
  10. Hammer of Wrath: non-proc, baseline.
  11. Blade of Justice: keep Expurgation DoT rolling.
  12. Judgment: buffs your next spender via Mastery interaction; do not skip.
  13. Templar Strike / Slash or Crusading Strikes: filler; do not overcap Holy Power to dump these.

Retribution Paladin Burst Cooldown Alignment Midnight

Your damage does not exist in a flat line. It exists in violent spikes every time Avenging Wrath is available, surrounded by a mediocre flatline of generators and waiting. Retribution Paladin burst cooldown alignment Midnight demands the following discipline: use Execution Sentence first, then Avenging Wrath, then spend all resources aggressively during Wings. Trinkets that provide a stat bonus align with Avenging Wrath automatically. On-use damage trinkets should fire inside the Avenging Wrath window for the Critical Strike chance bonus. If you are using an on-use trinket outside of Wings, you are explaining that decision to nobody because nobody is listening.

Never sit on Wake of Ashes. Execution Sentence and Final Reckoning both have their cooldowns tied to Wake of Ashes timing. Delaying Wake delays everything. Delaying everything costs you DPS. Costing yourself DPS on a cooldown-dependent spec is the WoW Midnight Retribution Paladin DPS optimization equivalent of bringing a fishing rod to a knife fight.

WoW Midnight Retribution Paladin AoE Rotation

The WoW Midnight Retribution Paladin AoE rotation swaps Final Verdict for Divine Storm as your primary Holy Power spender whenever 3 or more targets are present. This is not a complex decision. Three targets exist. Divine Storm goes out. Fewer than three targets: Final Verdict. This is the totality of the swap.

AoE Priority

  1. Avenging Wrath: your AoE multiplier. Everything is bigger under Wings.
  2. Execution Sentence: its final hit scales off all AoE damage dealt; hit as many targets as possible during its window.
  3. Hammer of Light: hits up to 7 nearby enemies. In a 5-pack this is your highest damage button per GCD. Use it.
  4. Divine Storm at 5 Holy Power: AoE spender. Replaces Final Verdict at 3+ targets.
  5. Wake of Ashes: AoE Holy damage, stuns Undead/Demons, generates 3 Holy Power, hits everything in 14 yards. Front-loaded AoE opener.
  6. Divine Toll: 5 simultaneous Judgments. The burst.
  7. Consecration: keep it down on multi-target for sustained AoE ticking. Not glamorous. Still correct.
  8. Blade of Justice with Art of War proc: the Light Within Rank 3 frontal cone effect makes this a genuine AoE spell during proc windows. Who designed this. It's fine. Press it.
  9. Divine Storm: filler AoE spender; continue burning Holy Power.
  10. Generators as needed to prevent Holy Power waste.

The Templar hero tree's passive Empyrean Hammers during Wings add passive AoE that requires zero button presses from you. This is not an excuse to stop pressing buttons. It is a reward for pressing the correct buttons. The distinction matters and your parse knows the difference.

Retribution Paladin Mythic+ Build WoW Midnight

Retribution Paladin Mythic+ build WoW Midnight defaults to Templar because Templar's Empyrean Hammer passive AoE and Hammer of Light's 7-target splash are the correct tools for the average Mythic+ pull. Herald of the Sun is not wrong in Mythic+; it simply provides less explosive burst at the start of a pack, which is when you most want explosive burst in a Mythic+ environment.

Utility in Mythic+

Retribution Paladin's utility value in Mythic+ is, frankly, disproportionate to how hard you have to work for your damage numbers. Blessing of Freedom removes movement impairing effects, which saves pulls from being ruined by someone standing in something. Lay on Hands fully heals a target on a 10-minute cooldown, which saves pulls from being ruined by your healer failing to account for burst damage windows. Wake of Ashes stuns Undead and Demon mobs for 5 seconds, which is relevant in a surprising number of Midnight dungeon encounters. You are a utility player who also hits things. Own it.

WoW Midnight Retribution Paladin Raid Rotation

The WoW Midnight Retribution Paladin raid rotation follows the same single-target priority established above, with the following additional discipline requirements for organized raid environments where your cooldowns can: and should: be aligned with Bloodlust, tank cooldowns, and shared burst timings your raid leader will absolutely not explain to you during progression.

Herald of the Sun becomes competitive in the raid specifically on sustained multi-target fights with 3 or more targets where Dawnlight DoTs maintain uptime and Hammer of Wrath amplification through Walk Into Light provides consistent throughput rather than relying on Wing windows. If your raid has 2-target cleave fights, Templar remains ahead. If you are playing pure single-target, either Hero tree is viable with proper build optimization.

Boss-Specific Notes

Cooldown alignment is your primary responsibility on boss fights. Stack Execution Sentence into Avenging Wrath windows. Time trinket usage inside Wings for Critical Strike chance benefit. On fights with discrete add phases, save Wake of Ashes for the add spawn so the stun lands on Undead or Demon targets and the AoE burst coincides with adds being clumped. On fights where your tank is taking a beating, throw Lay on Hands into a healer cooldown gap and feel briefly like a raid officer who made a good call. Use Divine Shield to drop threatening debuffs or soak mechanics without dying. This is a feature of the class, not a coincidence.

WoW Midnight Retribution Paladin Stat Priority

WoW Midnight Retribution Paladin stat priority is a guideline, not a commandment. The honest answer, which every guide is obligated to mention and which nobody actually does because it requires you to install Raidbots and learn how it works, is that you should simulate your character. The honest-but-not-helpful answer is listed below for people who prefer reading to simulating:

Stat

Priority (PvE)

Why

Strength

1: Primary

Scales everything. You get this from gear automatically. Well done.

Mastery

2: Best Secondary

Mastery: Highlord's Judgment now increases all Holy damage AND procs bonus damage on Judgment. Reworked in Midnight into something that justifies its existence.

Critical Strike

3: Strong Secondary

Synergizes with Art of War proc rate, Templar's Wrathful Descent AoE on crits, Heart of the Crusader. Stronger in AoE builds than in historical single-target tuning.

Haste

4: Good Secondary

Reduces cooldowns on JudgmentBlade of JusticeHammer of Wrath. Also provides more Crusading Strikes ticks if you're on that talent.

Versatility

5: Useful Secondary

Flat damage and damage reduction. No interesting synergies. Still not worthless at higher gear levels where other stats hit diminishing returns.

These priorities shift with gear. A Mastery-capped character may find Critical Strike pulling ahead. A simmer will catch this. A person reading a stat priority table will not. The table exists because you asked. Raidbots exists because the table is not enough.

Retribution Paladin BiS Gear WoW Midnight

Retribution Paladin BiS gear WoW Midnight Season 1 is not a static list that survives contact with your actual character's gear set. Higher item level wins in most cases. The following represents the theoretical best-in-slot framework, not a personal guarantee that these items will be better than the 285 crafted you have equipped because you got lucky with a socket.

Tier Set: Midnight Season 1

Prioritize 4-piece tier. For Midnight Season 1, the recommended pieces are Helm, Shoulder, Chest, and Legs. Grabbing the Gloves slot to complete a 4-piece via alternative pieces is acceptable and frequently necessary. Tier bonuses provide meaningful interactions with your core rotation: do not skip the 4-piece for non-tier item level gains unless simulation confirms it.

Upgrade Priority

Weapon upgrades provide a larger DPS increase than any other slot. After that: Trinkets > Helm/Chest/Legs/Jewellery > Shoulders/Gloves/Belt/Boots. This ordering should guide your Crest spending before you've run enough content to have fully informed gear decisions.

Crafting

Early in the season, crafting a Two-Handed Weapon upgraded to 285 item level via Myth Dawncrest is a strong investment. Weapons are slot-efficient in a way that no other crafted piece matches at equivalent Crest cost. Do not craft a chest piece when you could craft a weapon unless you already have a high-item-level weapon from raid or Mythic+.

Embellishments: Dawnthread Lining on a Wrist item is currently the most popular embellishment among top Retribution Paladins in Mythic+. It is not a controversial choice. It is the correct choice until your simulation says otherwise.

Retribution Paladin Best Professions Midnight

Retribution Paladin best professions Midnight selection follows the universal principle of choosing things that let you craft and enchant your own gear rather than begging strangers or paying inflated Auction House prices. The functional best choices are:

Profession

Primary Benefit

Verdict

Blacksmithing

Craft high-item-level Two-Handed Weapons and armor. Self-sufficient gearing in a melee class that is extremely slot-inefficient when missing a weapon upgrade.

Top Pick

Alchemy

Flask of the Magisters equivalent, stat potions, augmentation runes. Passive combat potion savings add up over a season in a way you underestimate until you calculate the gold cost.

Top Pick

Enchanting

Enchant your own gear without paying the Auction House markup. Also provides ring enchants, which are slot-specific and frequently overpriced by profiteers who correctly identified that players are lazy.

Strong Pick

Jewelcrafting

Self-gem. Socket into Necklaces and Rings with Magnificent Jeweler's Setting. Good if your alts can cover Alchemy and Enchanting.

Situational

The best Retribution Paladin gem is Indecipherable Eversong Diamond as your unique meta gem. Fill remaining sockets with Flawless Quick Amethyst (if you need Haste) or Flawless Masterful Peridot (if Mastery is pulling ahead in your sim). Run your character in Raidbots before spending gold on a full gem socket investment. The difference between gem choices is real and you will feel it in your parse exactly as much as you deserve to feel it.

Retribution Paladin PvP Guide Midnight & Arena Build WoW Midnight

The Retribution Paladin PvP guide Midnight section exists because someone decided Retribution Paladin should be good in PvP, and they were approximately right. Retribution currently serves as a burst-oriented melee/ranged hybrid with access to utility that would be illegal on any other melee spec, including: Lay on Hands for emergency full-heals on teammates, Blessing of Freedom for peel immunity, Divine Shield for personal immunity, and more defensive tools than any class that also gets to deal this much burst damage should have. Nobody is happy about this except you.

Retribution Paladin Arena Build WoW Midnight

Build

Hero Tree

Focus

Use When

Templar PvP

Templar

Hammer of Light burst, Sacrosanct Crusade, Wrathful Descent, high instantaneous pressure during Avenging Wrath. Divine Purpose for free Hammer of Light casts.

Kill-window comps that want one large spike of damage to force a healer decision

Herald of the Sun PvP

Herald of the Sun

Dawnlight DoT sustained pressure, Walk Into Light Hammer of Wrath amplification, sustained throughput during Avenging Wrath. Highest sustained pressure of any spec during Wings.

Slower-paced arena where sustained pressure outlasts defensive cooldowns over multiple exchanges

PvP Stat Priority

PvP stat priorities differ from PvE. In arena content, the Retribution Paladin PvP stat priority is: Versatility > Mastery > Haste > Critical Strike. Versatility is your best stat in PvP because it increases damage and healing output while reducing damage received. Target at least 25% Versatility through PvP gearing before optimizing other secondaries. Mastery: Highlord's Judgment synergizes with Boundless Judgment for extra burst damage during cooldown windows. Haste speeds up Blessing of An'she procs and reduces GCD and ability cooldowns. Critical Strike synergizes less cleanly with your PvP toolkit and sits last.

Key PvP Abilities

  • Divine Shield: 8-second full immunity. Use to deny polymorphs, avoid kill-windows, skip out of mechanics. If you use this wrong, a person on Reddit will post your video.
  • Lay on Hands: full health on a teammate on a 10-minute cooldown. This ability saves games. Using it correctly is the most important non-DPS decision you will make in an arena.
  • Blessing of Freedom: 8 seconds of movement impairing immunity. Cast this on yourself when a rogue has decided you are the problem. Cast it on your healer when a warrior has decided your healer is the problem.

Retribution Paladin Macros and Addons Midnight

Retribution Paladin macros and addons Midnight are not optional if you are attempting any content above the threshold of "I would like to not be embarrassed." Below are the categories of macros that will improve your gameplay measurably, followed by the addons that make the spec's proc tracking survivable.

Essential Macros

Macro Type

Purpose

Example Use Case

Burst Macro

Chain Avenging Wrath + on-use trinket + racial ability into a single button press

Opener, execute phase, specific pull timings in M+

Divine Shield Cancelaura

Cancel Divine Shield immediately after an immunity effect is no longer needed (e.g., after dropping a debuff) so you can resume attacking

Debuff drops, mechanic soaks, immediately resuming DPS

Mouseover Lay on Hands

Cast Lay on Hands on the unit under your cursor without retargeting

Emergency healing on any raid member without losing boss targeting

Mouseover Blessing of Freedom

Cast Blessing of Freedom on mouseover target

PvP peel and utility casts without targeting swap

Wake of Ashes + Hammer of Light Sequence

Press once to cast Wake of Ashes, macro tracks when Hammer of Light becomes available to prompt next press

Reduces delay between Wake proc and Hammer cast to near-zero

  • WeakAuras 2: Mandatory. Track Art of War procs, Holy Power count, Avenging Wrath duration, Expurgation DoT timer, and Hammer of Light availability. Import strings from Wago.io. Do not build these from scratch unless you are the type of person who builds furniture from scratch and then shows photos of it to people who did not ask.
  • Details! Damage Meter: So you can see exactly where your DPS fell apart and precisely which part of this guide you failed to read.
  • Plater Nameplates: Essential for Mythic+ target tracking, especially relevant for Wake of Ashes cone positioning and Execution Sentence target selection during multi-pack pulls.
  • OmniCD: Party and raid cooldown tracking. Know when your healer's cooldowns are available so you can use Lay on Hands during actual gaps rather than overlapping a healer's Healthstone-equivalent.
  • Bigwigs or Deadly Boss Mods: Boss timers for cooldown pre-planning. If you are not timing your Avenging Wrath to boss ability windows, you are leaving damage on the floor and annoying your raid leader simultaneously.

WoW Midnight Retribution Paladin DPS Optimization

WoW Midnight Retribution Paladin DPS optimization is a multi-layered process that begins with not overcapping Holy Power, continues with not misaligning your cooldowns, and ends with not blaming your gear for problems that are very clearly skill-based. The following are the most impactful habits that separate average Retribution Paladins from ones that their group actually wants.

Optimization Area

What Costs DPS

Correct Behavior

Holy Power Management

Generating Holy Power with 5 already banked. Overcapping is direct DPS loss with no mitigating argument.

Spend Holy Power before capping. Know when Crusading Strikes will generate the next point. Spend one GCD early rather than overcap by one.

Art of War Proc Expiration

Letting Art of War expire without pressing a proc-empowered Blade of Justice. With Light Within Rank 1, this is a 150% damage increase you voluntarily declined.

WeakAura on Art of War. Eye on the proc. Act within the window.

Wake of Ashes Delay

Holding Wake of Ashes for a "better moment." Every second it sits is a cascaded cooldown delay on Execution Sentence and the overall rotation cycle.

Use Wake of Ashes on cooldown unless you are within 15 seconds of a critical burst timing (pull, hero, specific boss ability phase).

Trinket Misalignment

Using on-use trinkets outside of Avenging Wrath.

Avenging Wrath does not buff trinket damage, but it does increase Critical Strike chance of the damage. Always fire damage trinkets inside Wings.

Melee Uptime

Standing outside melee range. Sounds basic. Your logs disagree with your self-assessment.

Stay in melee range. Use Blessing of Freedom on yourself to remove movement impairs so you can stay in melee range.

The final, most important optimization available to any Retribution Paladin in WoW Midnight is running Raidbots with your actual character in its actual gear. This guide provides a framework. Raidbots provides a verdict. If the two conflict, Raidbots is right and you should update your habits accordingly, including habits formed by reading this guide.

Retribution Paladin is a spec that rewards players who understand when to press buttons almost as much as it rewards players who know which buttons to press. The difference between a 60th and 90th percentile parse on this spec is frequently not talent selection or gear: it is cooldown discipline and resource management over the course of a 5-minute fight. Somewhere in those 300 seconds you made a decision that cost you 2,000 damage. The logs have an opinion about which one. You might want to ask them.

WoW Midnight Retribution Paladin Guide FAQ

Which Hero Talent tree is better for Retribution Paladin in Midnight: Templar or Herald of the Sun?

Templar leads in Mythic+ and burst-heavy fights. Herald of the Sun wins on sustained multi-target raid encounters with three-plus targets.

What is the best stat priority for Retribution Paladin in WoW Midnight?

Strength, then Mastery, Critical Strike, Haste, and Versatility. Simulate your character: static priority lists lie to individuals.

Should I use Crusading Strikes or Templar Strikes in Midnight?

Crusading Strikes pairs with Templar hero tree. Templar Strikes pairs with Herald of the Sun. Both are viable; mismatching them costs you more than you'd expect.

What are the best Retribution Paladin trinkets in Midnight Season 1?

Gaze of the Alnseer and Radiant Plume from raid are the current best-in-slot. Mythic+ alternatives exist but underperform versus raid trinkets this season.

How do I optimize Retribution Paladin DPS in WoW Midnight?

Never overcap Holy Power, never let Art of War procs expire, never delay Wake of Ashes without a reason, and always align on-use trinkets inside Avenging Wrath. That's eighty percent of the gap right there.
