The Retribution Paladin MoP Classic expansion experience revolves entirely around one resource: Holy Power. You generate it. You spend it. You weep when you overcap it at 5 stacks because you forgot Inquisition was about to fall off. The new Boundless Conviction passive raises your Holy Power cap to 5 but your abilities still only consume 3: meaning you now have a buffer, a luxury, a rope to hang yourself with if you're not paying attention.

How to play Retribution Paladin in WoW MoP Classic is a question with a deceptively simple-sounding answer: generate Holy Power with your generators, maintain Inquisition, and spend on Templar's Verdict. The reality is a gauntlet of cooldown alignment, proc reaction, utility obligations, and a cooldown-based burst window that will humiliate you during your first progression night if you don't practice it before stepping into Mogu'shan Vaults. Also, Auras are gone. Pour one out.

You are not a tank. You are not a healer. You are a melee DPS who happens to carry a medical kit, a bubble, and enough crowd control to make your raid leader develop unrealistic expectations about your utility. Manage those expectations early.

Strengths

Retribution Paladin enters MoP with a genuinely good toolkit. Burst damage during cooldown windows is excellent: Guardian of Ancient Kings stacking Ancient Power into a Avenging Wrath window is among the more satisfying burst sequences in the game, and Execution Sentence snapshots buffs with the ruthless efficiency of a debt collector. The utility kit: Hand of Protection, Hand of Sacrifice, Lay on Hands, Divine Protection: makes you genuinely valuable in progression content. The spec scales significantly with Haste, meaning it actually gets better as the expansion progresses. That is not always a given.

Weaknesses

Your sustained DPS between cooldowns is, charitably, "present." Less charitably, it is the spec's defining flaw during early phases when Haste is scarce. Sanctity of Battle makes your generators faster with more Haste, but until you have that Haste, you will feel every GCD like a slow walk through wet sand. You are also heavily reliant on melee uptime: a fight that moves the boss repeatedly will make your Warlock colleague insufferably smug. And you will never, ever live down missing a Hammer of Wrath during execute phase.

The WoW MoP Classic Retribution Paladin talent builds section exists to save you from the deeply misguided decision of picking talents based on which icon looks coolest. MoP's six-row talent system gives you one choice per tier, and several of those choices are actually meaningful. Several. Not all. Some rows have a clear winner and exist solely to test whether you'll convince yourself the wrong pick is "situational."

There are two primary DPS talent configurations: the Holy Avenger build for early phases where your Haste is low and you need reliable burst, and the Sanctified Wrath build for progression and later phases where Haste scaling makes the extended Avenging Wrath window more valuable. The Retribution Paladin MoP Classic expansion talent system also buries one important truth under a layer of false choice: Execution Sentence is your Tier 6 DPS pick for single target, and Light's Hammer takes over when you have three or more targets. That's it. Holy Prism is not a DPS cooldown. Please stop picking Holy Prism.

Glyph of the Righteous Retreat allows Divine Shield to trigger a hearthstone while active, which is genuinely useful on PvP servers and during world events. Pick them for quality of life and forget they exist in raid.

WoW MoP Classic Retribution Paladin Raid Rotation

The WoW MoP Classic Retribution Paladin raid rotation is priority-based, not sequential. If you are executing a strict 1-2-3-4-5 button sequence and wondering why your DPS is looking medically concerning, this section is for you. The system rewards reading your proc states and reacting: specifically, it punishes you for pressing Holy Power spenders the moment you hit 3 stacks instead of waiting for 5 when your generators are on cooldown anyway.

Retribution Paladin burst cooldown alignment MoP Classic: GoAK + AW + Execution Sentence must be pressed within the same window. Execution Sentence snapshots the buffs at cast time. Missing this window is how you explain a 60k DPS gap to your raid leader who has suddenly become very interested in your log.

Single Target Priority

The Retribution Paladin single target priority MoP Classic is listed below in strict order. Never let your generators sit on cooldown if you have room to generate Holy Power:

  1. Keep Inquisition up at all times. Refresh before it falls off. This is not optional. This is your existence.
  2. Hammer of Wrath: only available below 20% HP or during Avenging Wrath. Use on cooldown when available.
  3. Crusader Strike: primary Holy Power generator. On cooldown, always.
  4. Judgment: generates Holy Power and a ranged proc. On cooldown, always.
  5. Exorcism: on cooldown. Generates Holy Power. Do not sit on this.
  6. Execution Sentence: on cooldown, ideally inside cooldown windows for the snapshot.
  7. Templar's Verdict: spend at 5 Holy Power ideally, or at 3 if all generators are on cooldown. Never at 4 just because you can.

Maintain Seal of Truth for all single target encounters. It applies Censure, which stacks to 5 and passively boosts your physical damage once fully stacked. Switching seals mid-fight for single target content means you wasted time reading someone's very bad forum post.

WoW MoP Classic Retribution Paladin AoE Rotation

The WoW MoP Classic Retribution Paladin AoE rotation kicks in the moment you have two or more enemies. This is not a complex calculation. The modifications are surgical: replace Crusader Strike with Hammer of the Righteous, replace Templar's Verdict with Divine Storm, and for 3+ targets, consider Light's Hammer over Execution Sentence.

For Seal selection: Seal of Righteousness deals AoE weapon damage on every melee swing and is your swap-to seal once you have three or more targets and enough time on the fight that Censure stacking is irrelevant. You can also spread Censure manually by hitting each target if the pack has only two enemies: this requires more attention than most people are willing to invest in a trash pull.

  1. Keep Inquisition up. Yes, even on trash. No, this will not save you if the tank pulls the entire dungeon.
  2. Hammer of the Righteous: replaces Crusader Strike. Hits all targets within 8 yards. Generates Holy Power.
  3. Judgment: still on cooldown, still generating Holy Power.
  4. Exorcism with Glyph of Mass Exorcism: now hits everything in melee range. Equip the glyph or this entry is irrelevant.
  5. Divine Storm at 5 Holy Power: hits all enemies within 8 yards. Your primary spender in AoE.
  6. Light's Hammer: on 3+ targets, drop it at the center of the pack and let it pulse Holy damage repeatedly for its full duration.

WoW MoP Classic Retribution Paladin Stat Priority

The WoW MoP Classic Retribution Paladin stat priority is one of the cleaner priority lists in the expansion, which is appropriate because this spec punishes players who ignore hit and expertise with the cold efficiency of a Judgment hitting air. Reach the caps first. Everything else is secondary, and yes, that includes Strength. Capped and correct beats uncapped and overstated every time.

Hit and Expertise to 7.5% each. These are not suggestions. A Judgment that misses a boss is a personal insult to physics. A dodged Templar's Verdict is an experience that will alter your mood for the rest of the raid night. Draenei players need 1% less Hit from gear due to Heroic Presence. Dwarf or Human players using a mace or sword need 1% less Expertise from gear. Use reforging until both caps are met, then prioritize Strength, then Haste, then Mastery, then Critical Strike.

Haste deserves a special mention: through Sanctity of Battle, Haste directly reduces the cooldown of Crusader Strike, Judgment, and Exorcism. More generators cycling faster means more Holy Power, means more Templar's Verdict, means more DPS. The entire spec gets genuinely better as you acquire more Haste gear. This is the rare case where your DPS in Phase 4 will be observably higher than Phase 1 for reasons beyond item level alone.

The 4-piece bonus gives Crusader Strike a 40% chance to make your next Templar's Verdict deal all Holy damage: a significant damage increase that aligns with your burst windows.

You also have a movement speed that, outside of Speed of Light, will allow every Rogue in the battlegroup to kite you until they die of old age.

The Retribution Paladin arena build WoW MoP Classic differs from the PvE setup in gear, stats, and several talent choices. PvP Power and Resilience from PvP gear are mandatory in rated content: this is not a debate, this is mathematics. A full PvP Power stack increases your damage against players by a meaningful percentage, and Resilience reduces incoming damage in ways that keep you alive long enough to actually press your buttons. Mixing ungemmed PvE gear into a rated arena set will get you killed before your Avenging Wrath finishes its 3-second animation.

PvP Power should be prioritized in all gem sockets through Tyrannical Primal Diamond (meta gem) and Deft Vermilion Onyx (red/yellow mixed). Hit and Expertise are still relevant in PvP as your abilities should connect: some players choose to partially cap Hit at 3% from gear to ensure Judgment lands in PvP scenarios where diminishing returns on CC make landing every ability critical.

Your kill window is: Avenging Wrath + Holy Avenger + Execution Sentence + Templar's Verdict spam. Open on a Kidney Shot or your partner's CC. If your target trinkets out and you have no follow-up CC, you have a 3-minute wait until you try again. Use the time to think about your life choices.
