Wow Mop Classic Platinum Coins Farm Guide | Wow Challenge Mode Guide
New guide is live: Unholy Death Knight MoP Classic. Rotation, talents, BiS gear, and cooldown alignment: written with the contempt you deserve.
The definitive Unholy DK MoP Classic class overview for people who decided that diseases, a pet, a gargoyle, and a small army of the dead was somehow not enough complexity: so they added rune management on top. Welcome. You made this choice. Own it.
Unholy Death Knight in the Mists of Pandaria expansion is a disease-driven melee DPS spec built around three pillars: maintaining Blood Plague and Frost Fever on targets, furiously cramming Death Coils into your Ghoul's face to stack Shadow Infusion for Dark Transformation, and aligning Summon Gargoyle with every external buff you can beg, borrow, or steal from your raid.
MoP brought meaningful quality-of-life changes to the spec. Summon Gargoyle no longer costs Runic Power: a decision that retroactively makes you wonder what Blizzard was thinking charging for a timed cooldown in the first place. Blood Tap was redesigned into a talent with a charge system, and the new talent tier structure gives you genuine choices instead of a tree full of things you were never going to take. Reaping now converts runes spent on Blood Boil and Icy Touch into Death Runes, which smooths out AoE considerably: assuming you remember to actually use them.
In Phase 1, Unholy DK is one of the strongest DPS specs in the game. Enjoy it. Cherish it. Other classes will eventually catch up and your guild leader will start suggesting you "consider Frost." Do not tolerate this.

The WoW MoP Classic Unholy Death Knight talent builds are deceptively simple: MoP collapsed the bloated talent trees of previous expansions into six tiers of two to three meaningful choices. The core DPS damage comes from your spec, not your talents. What the talents decide is how much trouble you cause, how often you face-plant from mobility issues, and whether you ever actually understand how Blood Tap works.
Plague Leech: The mathematically superior choice. Consumes diseases to activate two depleted runes as Death Runes. Requires you to immediately reapply diseases via Outbreak, which means it demands a brain. Use it correctly and parse higher. Use it incorrectly and stare at a rune bar.
Lichborne: A self-heal via Death Coil when talented. Rarely mandatory in raid PvE, but useful when your healers decided the boss mechanics were someone else's problem.
Death's Advance: Passive movement speed increase. Because the movement speed of a heavily armored undead death machine should not be "worrying."
Death Pact: Sacrifices your Ghoul to heal you for 50% of your max health. Do not do this when you need your Ghoul for Dark Transformation. This should go without saying. It will still need to be said to at least one person.
Blood Tap: The best DPS option and also the most punishing if you ignore it. Generates Blood Charges via Death Coil casts; at 5 charges, converts a depleted rune into a Death Rune. Track it. Use it. Profit. Alternatively, Runic Corruption is available if you need to pretend this mechanic doesn't exist.
Gorefiend's Grasp: Pulls every enemy within 20 yards to your Ghoul's location. Dungeons love this. Certain raid encounters love this. Your tank's blood pressure does not love this, but their opinion was not solicited.
For dungeons and Challenge Mode, swap Tier 1 to Roiling Blood: it spreads your diseases via Blood Boil and is considerably more forgiving in the chaos of rapid multi-pull content where pausing to Plague Leech is aspirational fiction.

Glyph |
Why You Take It |
|
Glyph of Loud Horn |
Increases the duration of your Horn of Winter buff. Less recasting, more hitting things. |
|
Glyph of Anti-Magic Shell |
Increases the duration of Anti-Magic Shell. More magic absorbed, more Runic Power generated. Free resources from your own boss. |
|
Glyph of Regenerative Magic |
Reduces Anti-Magic Shell cooldown if it expires early. A generous glyph for an ability that frankly didn't need your help. |
|
Glyph of Pestilence (situational) |
Spreads diseases in a wider radius. Take this for AoE-heavy fights. Leave it otherwise. |
|
Glyph of Festering Blood (situational) |
Causes your diseases to behave as if three diseases are active. AoE damage improvement on Blood Boil-heavy pulls. |

Every spell an Unholy Death Knight in the Mists of Pandaria expansion should know. Learn them. Then learn why the order you press them matters. Then learn that the order changes based on rune availability. Then cry briefly. Then come back and parse well.
|
Spell |
Resource |
What it Does |
|
No cost |
Instantly applies Blood Plague and Frost Fever. Zero rune cost. Your disease application on demand. On a 1-minute cooldown. |
|
|
1 Unholy Rune |
Now applies both diseases in a single cast. Outbreak's fallback when the cooldown is unavailable and your diseases have expired out of spite. |
|
|
1 Blood + 1 Frost Rune |
Extends your disease durations by up to 6 seconds per cast and converts Blood/Frost runes to Death Runes over time. Your rune conversion engine. |
|
|
1 Unholy Rune |
Your primary damage ability. Deals Physical plus Shadow damage amplified by your diseases. Every priority list leads here eventually. |
|
|
45 Runic Power |
Shadow damage spender that also applies a Shadow Infusion stack to your Ghoul. Five stacks unlock Dark Transformation. Do not waste these. |
|
|
5 Shadow Infusion stacks + 1 Unholy Rune |
Consumes Shadow Infusion to turn your Ghoul into a significantly more terrifying entity for 30 seconds. Highest-priority buff window in the spec. |
|
|
1 Unholy Rune |
AoE ground effect that deals damage and converts runes. The centerpiece of your AoE rotation. Your tank will appreciate you placing it correctly. Mostly. |
|
|
No cost (changed in MoP) |
Summons a Gargoyle for 30 seconds. Your single largest DPS cooldown. Align with Bloodlust and every Strength proc available to you. |
|
|
3 of each Rune |
Raises a horde of ghouls that fight for you. Cast before the pull: they generate significant threat during channeling and will embarrass you mid-fight. |
|
|
No cost |
Grants 20% melee Haste for 30 seconds. Does not stack with Bloodlust/Heroism. Do not waste both simultaneously. |
|
|
No cost |
Instantly refreshes all Runes and grants 25 Runic Power. Use when every rune is on cooldown and converted to Death Runes for maximum Scourge Strike output. |
|
|
1 Unholy Rune |
Deals instant damage and applies a debuff that detonates for massive additional damage when the target falls below 35% health. Your execute phase tool. |
|
|
Talent |
Consumes diseases to convert two depleted runes to Death Runes. Only use when Outbreak is available to immediately reapply. The most abused talent in the spec. |
|
|
Talent / 5 Blood Charges |
Each Death Coil generates 2 Blood Charges. At 5+ charges, converts a depleted rune to a Death Rune. Macro it. Track it. It is free runes if you treat it with respect. |
|
|
No cost |
Raid buff granting Strength and Agility. Maintain it. Not your job alone in a full raid, but keep it up if no other DK is assigned. |
|
|
No cost |
Yanks an enemy to you and applies a Taunt. Useful for positioning. Occasionally used to save a bad pull. Occasionally blamed for causing one. |
|
|
1 Blood or Death Rune |
AoE damage centered on you that deals increased damage to diseased targets. Core to the AoE rotation when diseases are spread. Also your rune conversion tool with Reaping. |
The Unholy Death Knight stat priority in the Mists of Pandaria expansion is mercifully straightforward compared to your rotation. Stack the right numbers. Reforge the wrong ones away. Understand why Hit and Expertise share the same cap before you open a discussion about the relative merits of Mastery vs Haste in your guild Discord.
|
Stat |
Target / Notes |
|
Hit Rating |
7.5% (2550 rating). Abilities that miss do zero damage. Your Gargoyle misses too. Cap this. |
|
Expertise |
7.5% (2550 rating). Parry and dodge both set your DPS to zero. Identical priority to Hit. Draenei need 1% less Hit due to Heroic Presence. |
|
Strength |
Your primary damage stat. Every point buffs your abilities and your pet. All gear decisions flow through this. |
|
Critical Strike |
Directly amplifies all your damage and benefits your Ghoul and Gargoyle's output. Strong throughput stat. |
|
Haste |
Accelerates attacks and benefits your pet. Valuable but trails Crit for Unholy specifically due to disease and pet scaling. |
|
Mastery |
Increases Shadow damage. Functional but trails the stats above it. Reforge this to Crit if possible. |
Do not stack Mastery thinking your Shadow damage amplification makes it BiS. It does not. Simcraft will confirm this if you refuse to accept it in writing.

The Unholy Death Knight raid rotation in MoP Classic is a priority system, not a fixed sequence. This is important. If you attempt to follow a strict 1-2-3-4-5 rotation, you will overcap runes, drop diseases, miss Dark Transformation windows, and confuse your raid leader, who will eventually suggest you try Blood.
The Unholy DK single target priority opener sequence, executed before and just after pull:
Empower Rune Weapon refreshes all your Runes and grants 25 Runic Power. Use it when all your runes are on cooldown and you have converted them to Death Runes for maximum Scourge Strike throughput. Do not panic-press it mid-fight when one rune is sitting at 75% regeneration. The five-minute cooldown deserves more respect than that.
The Unholy Death Knight AoE rotation in Mists of Pandaria is significantly more satisfying than watching your parse in single-target mediocrity while a Fire Mage breathes on the meters. Multiple diseased targets mean multiple disease ticks, Blood Boil chains, and Death and Decay puddles spreading misery across an entire pull. This is what you signed up for.
If you have Roiling Blood talented (the dungeon/Challenge Mode recommendation), Blood Boil alone spreads your diseases without requiring Pestilence. This dramatically simplifies AoE disease management and frees GCDs for more productive things, like hitting the target harder.
The Unholy Death Knight Mythic+ build WoW MoP Classic equivalent: Challenge Modes in MoP: rewards the same fundamentals as raids but punishes slower disease spreading considerably more. Pulls happen faster. Time is a resource. Roiling Blood is your friend because it doesn't ask you to think.

The Unholy Death Knight burst cooldown alignment in the Mists of Pandaria expansion is where competent players separate from the people just pressing buttons in vaguely the right order. Your Gargoyle lasts 30 seconds. Your cooldowns need to be active during those 30 seconds. External buffs need to land during those 30 seconds. Strength procs from your weapon enchant need to be active during those 30 seconds. If this sounds demanding, congratulations: you selected a DPS spec.
|
Cooldown |
Duration / CD |
Priority Alignment |
|
30s / 3 min |
Primary DPS cooldown. The Gargoyle's damage scales with your Attack Power snapshot at cast time. Stack every buff before pressing this button. |
|
|
30s / 3 min |
Cast during Gargoyle. 20% Haste for 30 seconds: identical uptime. Does not stack with Bloodlust. Do not waste Bloodlust by pressing this first. |
|
|
30s summon / 10 min |
Cast pre-pull only. Mid-fight casts taunt enemies and introduce chaos. Save it for openers and intermission phases where you can channel freely. |
|
|
30s / no CD (stacks) |
Not a traditional cooldown but a triggered window. Always activate before Gargoyle if possible for a fully-buffed two-pet burst window. |
|
|
Instant / 5 min |
Use when all runes are on cooldown and converted to Death Runes. Pairing with Gargoyle for an additional burst of Scourge Strikes is the ideal scenario. |
|
|
Rune of the Fallen Crusader |
Passive proc |
Weapon enchant. Procs to increase Strength by 15%. Delay Gargoyle briefly if Fallen Crusader is about to proc or is currently active. |
The best Unholy Death Knight trinkets in the Mists of Pandaria expansion reward Strength-based on-use or proc effects that align with your Gargoyle window. Agility trinkets are not your concern. Intellect trinkets are someone else's problem entirely.
|
Trinket |
Type |
Source |
Notes |
|
Proc: Strength |
Darkmoon Tiger Deck (Inscription) |
Pre-BiS trinket that remains competitive into early raid tiers. The Strength proc aligns beautifully with Gargoyle windows and Fallen Crusader. Get this first. |
|
|
Proc: Strength |
Scholomance (Darkmaster Gandling) |
Accessible pre-raid Strength proc. Replace with raid trinkets as soon as possible, but useful until then. |
|
|
Carbonic Carbuncle |
On-use: Strength |
Mogu'shan Vaults |
On-use Strength effect allows precise alignment with your burst window. Prioritize pairing on-use trinkets with Gargoyle cast times. |
|
Vial of Dragon's Blood |
Proc: Strength |
Mogu'shan Vaults |
Passive Strength proc. Reliable throughput increase that requires no activation management. |

The Unholy Death Knight best professions in the Mists of Pandaria expansion follow the same logic as every other DPS class in every other Classic expansion: pick the two professions that grant the largest passive Strength bonus or the best on-use effect, then ignore the existence of all other professions for raiding purposes.
|
Profession |
Bonus |
Verdict |
|
Blacksmithing |
Two extra gem sockets on Bracers and Gloves |
The strongest passive DPS profession. Two bonus gem slots can be filled with Bold Pandarian Garnet (Strength gems) for a flat, permanent Strength advantage over non-Blacksmiths. This is the answer. |
|
Engineering |
Synapse Springs: Glove enchant, +1,920 Strength on-use, 10s / 60s CD |
The best on-use DPS profession bonus in the game. Stack this with Gargoyle and Fallen Crusader for a window of terrifying intensity. Nitro Boosts as a backup. Strong but slightly awkward. |
|
Jewelcrafting |
Unique Jeweler's gems with higher Strength values than standard gems |
Competitive but trails Blacksmithing in total Strength gain. Third-best option. |
|
Inscription |
Superior shoulder enchants and Relic of Xuen via the Tiger Deck |
The only professions-adjacent path to Relic of Xuen that doesn't involve buying it. Functional, not optimal for committed raiders. |
Blacksmithing paired with Engineering is the standard answer for Unholy Death Knight best professions in MoP Classic. Blacksmithing provides the highest passive stat gain; Engineering provides the best burst alignment. Everything else is aesthetics.
The Unholy Death Knight PvP guide MoP Classic begins with a frank assessment: you are a slow, heavily armored plate-wearing disease machine with a pet, no reliable gap-closer, and a gargoyle that other players will immediately recognize as your damage window and CC accordingly. None of this stops you from being genuinely threatening. Unholy's sustained pressure, disruption toolkit, and burst windows make it a legitimate PvP contender in MoP Season 12 and 13, particularly in 2v2 with a partner who can peel for you.
Plague Leech for rune generation. Burst windows in arena require every rune advantage you can manufacture.
Lichborne: a panic button that lets you Death Coil yourself to full health when your healer is locked out. Essential.
Death's Advance: passive movement speed. You cannot catch every class; at least minimize how embarrassingly far behind you fall.
Death Pact: sacrifices Ghoul for 50% HP heal. In PvP this can save your life or waste your pet. Think before pressing.
Runic Corruption: simpler than Blood Tap in the dynamic environment of arena. You have enough to track. Concede this tier.
Asphyxiate: a stun that replaces Gorefiend's Grasp for arena. Stuns win games. Grabs are situational. Stuns are mandatory.
How to play Unholy Death Knight in WoW MoP Classic PvP: open on the kill target with Death Grip, apply diseases with Outbreak, build to Dark Transformation, and align Summon Gargoyle with your partner's stun or crowd control. Your burst window: Gargoyle plus Dark Transformation plus trinket: should kill or force defensive cooldowns from any target that is not being actively healed.
Maintain Anti-Magic Shell to prevent CC chains. Use Lichborne as a last resort heal or to break fear (the Undead effect makes you temporarily immune to fear while Lichborne is active, then you Death Coil yourself). Asphyxiate to extend your burst window. Death Grip to drag healers out of position. Chains of Ice to prevent kiting. You have more tools than most melee specs. Use them deliberately rather than reactively.
Essential Macros
Macro: Blood Tap + Death Coil: macro these together to simplify Blood Tap charge management:
#showtooltip Death Coil
/cast Blood Tap
/cast Death Coil
Macro: Army of the Dead focus macro: cast Army on yourself without retargeting:
#showtooltip Army of the Dead
/cast [@player] Army of the Dead
Macro: Lichborne self-heal for PvP: enter Lichborne and immediately Death Coil yourself:
#showtooltip Lichborne
/cast Lichborne
/cast [@player] Death Coil
Macro: Summon Gargoyle burst package: fires your burst sequence in one key for precise burst timing:
#showtooltip Summon Gargoyle
/cast Unholy Frenzy
/use [slot:13] 13 -- Trinket 1
/cast Summon Gargoyle
Unholy Death Knight DPS optimization in the Mists of Pandaria expansion lives and dies on three pillars: disease uptime, Dark Transformation uptime, and Gargoyle alignment. Master these three and you will parse competently. Fail one of them consistently and you will wonder why your numbers look like a Blood DK's.

Unholy is one of the strongest DPS specs in Phase 1. Your guild leader told the truth, possibly by accident.
Blood Tap sims higher and rewards skill. Runic Corruption is passive and forgiving. Pick honestly based on your self-assessment.
When every rune is on cooldown and converted to Death Runes, maximizing back-to-back Scourge Strike casts. Never panic-press it.
Not really. The Lichborne self-heal helps but you need healing support for sustained arena viability. Find a healer.
Rune of the Fallen Crusader on your 2H weapon. Every other option is meaningfully worse and not worth discussing.
