The MoP Classic Legendary Cloak Farming Guide

The Legendary Cloak questline, formally titled Breath of the Black Prince, is a five-chapter odyssey lovingly designed to consume every free hour of your gaming life from Phase 1 all the way through Phase 5 of MoP Classic. Wrathion: the last black dragon, a teenager with a superiority complex and suspiciously excellent taste in whiskey: will guide you through Mogu'shan Vaults, Throne of Thunder, the Siege of Orgrimmar, and the Timeless Isle. He will demand sigils, reputation, secrets of dead empires, titan relics, coin currency from a time-locked island, and the severed heart of a storm god. In return, you get a cape. A legendary cape. The best cape. A cape that technically holds the fate of Azeroth in its stitching. But still. A cape.

Before we dive into the exquisite suffering, here are the questions currently ricocheting around your skull, answered implicitly throughout this guide.

  1. How many weeks of raiding will it actually take before I have a legendary cloak, and is it physically possible to complete this questline before the next expansion renders it irrelevant?
  2. Why does Wrathion, an allegedly all-knowing dragon prodigy, need me specifically to go fight Lei Shen three separate times across three different quests?
  3. Are Titan Runestones truly subject to the RNG gods, or is there some secret Blizzard intern who personally decides whether your raid boss drops one?
  4. Do I actually have to win a Temple of Kotmogu battleground, or is this just Wrathion's sadistic way of filtering out players who haven't touched PvP since Cataclysm?
  5. Once I finally get the legendary cloak proc to fire in a raid, how long do I have before my guildmates get one too and it stops being impressive?
  6. If the Timeless Isle is supposed to be a catch-up zone full of free gear, why does it feel like an exhausting theme park run by angry turtles and aggressive fire spirits?
  7. After all this, is the legendary cloak actually best in slot for my spec, or have I just spent months earning a very pretty cape I'll be replacing in six weeks?

The Full Arc of Your Suffering: All Five Chapters

The Wrathion legendary questline in Mists of Pandaria Classic is divided into five chapters, each unlocked with a specific phase of the Classic rollout. Since we are now in Phase 4 and approaching Phase 5, all chapters are either already available or imminent. Here is your roadmap at a glance: the full legendary cloak farming journey from a nervous Level 90 to a winged, Ordos-murdering apex predator.

Chapter I – Trial of the Black Prince (Phase 1): Meet Wrathion at the Tavern in the Mists. Kill thousands of Mogu and Mantid. Farm 10x Sigils of Power and 10x Sigils of Wisdom from Tier 14 raids. Slay the Sha of Fear. Earn a Sha-Touched gem.

Chapter II – Wrathion's War (Phase 2): Grind Revered reputation, earn 3,000 Valor Points, win mandatory PvP battlegrounds (yes, really), and defeat the Sha of Fear again. Receive the Eye of the Black Prince: a prismatic socket upgrade for your weapon.

Chapter III – Two Princes (Phase 3): Travel to the Isle of Thunder. Reach Exalted with the Black Prince. Farm 20x Secrets of the Empire and 12x Titan Runestones. Collect 40 Trillium Bars. Kill Lei Shen. Earn a Legendary Meta Gem for your helmet.

Chapter IV – Celestial Blessings (Phase 4): Complete role-specific solo challenges at the Celestial temples. Receive an ilvl 600 Epic Cloak. This is where Phase 4 players are right now: or should be.

Chapter V – Judgment of the Black Prince (Phase 5): Travel to the Timeless Isle. Collect 5,000 Timeless Coins. Defeat all four August Celestials as world bosses. Upgrade your epic cloak into a true Legendary Cloak. Unlock Ordos for your entire account. Defeat Garrosh Hellscream. Ascend. Quest #33709

Phase 4 Focus: This guide gives special attention to Chapters IV and V: the Celestial Blessings solo trials, the epic cloak selection, the Timeless Isle grind, and the final legendary cloak upgrade. If you are still stuck on Chapter III, your suffering is addressed too.

The MoP Classic Legendary Cloak Farming Guide

Chapter I: Trial of the Black Prince

Find Wrathion.

Your legendary cloak journey begins at Level 90. A mysterious note will find you: Stranger in a Strange Land: directing you to the Tavern in the Mists in the Veiled Stair, a charming little mountain passage between Valley of the Four Winds and Kun-Lai Summit. There you will find Wrathion, the Black Prince, holding court over a tavern that he clearly considers far below his station. He will buy you a drink. You will accept. This is the last time anything in this questline will feel effortless.

Alliance players can also be nudged here via Brewmaster Tsu in the Shrine of Seven Stars; Horde players via Kurong Caskhead in the Shrine of Two Moons. Both routes end at the same insufferable prodigy dragon.

Become Honored With The Black Prince

The Trial of the Black Prince begins with Trial of the Black Prince: a quest requiring you to reach Honored reputation with The Black Prince faction. The method? Industrialized murder of Mogu and Mantid. Head to the Vale of Eternal Blossoms near the Ruins of Guo-Lai, the Townlong Steppes, or the Dread Wastes, and start swinging. Bring a friend. Bring a Battle Standard of Coordination if you want rep gains that feel slightly less geologic in pace. Rogues who completed the Cataclysm legendary dagger questline skip this step entirely, because of course they do.

Farm 10x Sigils of Power and 10x Sigils of Wisdom

Welcome to your first real grind. Sigils of Power and Sigils of Wisdom drop from bosses in Mogu'shan Vaults, Heart of Fear, and Terrace of Endless Spring: the Tier 14 raids. Since LFR does not exist in MoP Classic, Blizzard has compensated with Celestial Dungeons, which become available two weeks after each raid's release and drop both sigils and Sha-Touched weapons at a lower item level. Each boss has a chance to drop a sigil on its first kill per week: Normal and Heroic included. Full-clearing all three Tier 14 raids weekly is your most efficient route. Expect this to take at least two weeks, possibly three if the RNG deities have declared a grudge against you personally.

Kill the Sha of Fear. Collect the Chimera.

With sigils in hand, Wrathion sends you to defeat Sha of Fear in the Terrace of Endless Spring and loot the Chimera of Fear. Any difficulty works. If you are conveniently locked out of Terrace this week, the alternate version of this quest: When in Doubt: sends you to defeat the Sha of Doubt in the Celestial difficulty Temple of the Jade Serpent for an equivalent Chimera of Doubt. Turn this in to Wrathion, who will look deeply moved and immediately ask for more things. Your reward: one of three Sha-Touched gems: Crystallized Dread (+500 Crit), Crystallized Terror (+500 Hit), or Crystallized Horror (+500 Intellect). These socket into Sha-Touched weapons only. Item #94184

Chapter I: Trial of the Black Prince

Chapter II: Wrathion's War

Grind Revered. Then Suffer Through Valor.

Chapter II introduces two parallel grinds you can progress simultaneously, a small mercy. The first is reputation: reach Revered with The Black Prince by defeating faction enemies in southern Krasarang Wilds (Alliance kills Horde NPCs, Horde kills Alliance NPCs: the lore calls this "war," the players call it "Tuesday"). The second is A Test of Valor: earn 3,000 fresh Valor Points after accepting the quest. Valor from before accepting the quest does not count, which is either an oversight or a deliberate act of cruelty. Dungeons, scenarios, and raid bosses all award Valor. The weekly cap means you cannot brute-force this in one sitting. Plan your week accordingly. Quest #32584

Win Two PvP Battlegrounds. Yes. Both.

Wrathion, a being of immense power and questionable parenting, has decided the next step in your legendary Mists of Pandaria Classic journey is to win one match of Temple of Kotmogu and one match of Silvershard Mines. There is no alternative. There is no opt-out. If you have not touched PvP since Wrath of the Lich King, this is your wake-up call. Temple of Kotmogu is an orb-control battleground; hold orbs, kill people, score points. Silvershard Mines is a cart-escort brawl. Focus on objectives. Queue repeatedly until you achieve victory. Accept that it may take a while. Do not ask Wrathion why he needs this. He will not give you a satisfying answer. Quest #32586

Kill Sha of Fear (Again). Receive the Eye of the Black Prince.

With Valor banked and battlegrounds won, Wrathion presents you with the Breath of the Black Prince: which sounds like a spell but is actually a quest requiring you to kill the Sha of Fear one more time. You have now killed the Sha of Fear twice. This is fine. Completing this quest rewards you with the Eye of the Black Prince, which adds a prismatic socket to your Sha-Touched weapon or any Armament of the Thunder King from Throne of Thunder. This is not nothing. A well-placed gem in that socket is a genuine power boost. Treasure it. You earned it through bureaucratic suffering and two battleground wins. Item #94120

Chapter II: Wrathion's War

Chapter III: Two Princes

Get to the Isle of Thunder. Become Exalted.

Chapter III opens by asking you to unlock the Isle of Thunder via the Thunder Calls questline: Alliance players report to Scout Captain Elsia at Shado-Pan Garrison in Townlong Steppes, Horde to Vereesa Windrunner at the same location. Once on the island, you must reach Exalted with The Black Prince by grinding Mogu, Zandalari, and Saurok mobs across the Isle of Thunder. This is your most time-intensive reputation grind of the entire questline. The Battle Standard of Coordination stacks with other rep bonuses and remains your best friend throughout. Use it. Worship it. Item #90958

Farm 20x Secrets of the Empire

Secrets of the Empire drop from all bosses in Throne of Thunder on Normal difficulty or above. No LFR in MoP Classic means no LFR secrets: you need a proper raid group. Once Siege of Orgrimmar opens in Phase 5, the first eight SoO bosses also drop Secrets as a catch-up mechanism, which is generous of Blizzard and only took them two tiers to implement. One drop chance per boss per reset. You need 20. The math is unforgiving. Lock in your weekly ToT clear and do not skip a single reset. Simultaneously, Wrathion wants 40 Trillium Bars: buy them on the Auction House, smelt them yourself as a miner, or have an Alchemist transmute Ghost Iron Bars. The Auction House route is fastest. Your gold is a fair trade for your sanity. Item #94289

Farm 12x Titan Runestones. Enter RNG Purgatory.

Here it is. The quest that broke spirits in original Mists of Pandaria and will gleefully break more in Classic. Titan Runestones drop exclusively from the last six bosses of Throne of Thunder: the Halls of Flesh-Shaping and the Pinnacle of Storms. That means Durumu, Primordius, Dark Animus, Iron Qon, Twin Consorts, and Lei Shen. Six bosses, one drop chance each per week, maximum. You need twelve. The drop rate is not guaranteed. Some players have cleared these six bosses for four straight weeks and seen five total runestones. If that happens to you, we encourage deep breathing and perhaps a hobby that does not involve dice. Stay consistent. Do not miss a week. Accept the variance. Echoes of the Titans: it will haunt yours. Item #94291

Kill Lei Shen. Receive a Legendary Meta Gem.

With Runestones finally in hand, Wrathion sends you to kill Lei Shen in the Halls of Thunder: which you have now done many times for sigils, for Secrets, and now for his actual heart. Turn in the Heart of the Thunder King and Wrathion awards you a Legendary Meta Gem of your choice for any helmet with a base item level of 502 or higher. Your options: Capacitive Primal Diamond for physical DPS (chain lightning proc), Courageous Primal Diamond for healers (free-mana-spell proc), Sinister Primal Diamond for caster DPS (spell haste proc), or Indomitable Primal Diamond for tanks (20% damage reduction proc). Pick your spec's match. The effect is immediately, visibly powerful. Congratulations: you are now wearing two legendary items and still don't have the cloak. Item #95462

Tip: Additional meta gems can be purchased from the Blacktalon Quartermaster at coordinates /way #433 54.4 72.8 in the Veiled Stair for 5x Primal Diamonds each: useful if you need gems for multiple specs.

Chapter III: Two Princes

Chapter IV: Celestial Blessings: The Heart of Phase 4

Visit All Four Celestial Temples

Phase 4 is where the Celestial Blessings chapter unlocks. Wrathion: fresh from consuming a storm god's cardiac muscle and seemingly energized by it: now requires you to seek wisdom from Pandaria's four divine guardians. You must physically visit all four Celestial temples, even if your actual trial only takes place at one. The temples are Temple of the White Tiger in Kun-Lai Summit (Melee DPS trials), Shrine of the Two Moons / Temple of the Jade Serpent for Caster DPS, Niuzao Temple in Townlong Steppes for Tanks, and Temple of the Red Crane in Krasarang Wilds for Healers. Wrathion has left a spirit at each, and you need their blessing before the final solo trial. If you are Honored with the August Celestials faction, you can purchase a Celestial Offering coin at each temple that grants temporary stat bonuses specifically useful for the upcoming solo scenario. Do not skip this. These bonuses matter.

Complete the Solo Celestial Trial: The One Thing Nobody Can Do For You

This is the most genuinely challenging section of the legendary cloak questline, and unlike everything before it, you cannot outsource it. The Celestial Trial is a solo scenario customized to your role. You face a dragon construct summoned by Wrathion in a sealed arena. The dragon casts Reign of Fire (massive AoE: move immediately), drops Blood of the Deathborn pools on the ground (stand in these and die, obviously), and summons adds called Neltharion's Tears that scale up in threat the longer they live. DPS players need to manage the adds while not standing in fire: which is every raider's core competency, tested here without the comfortable safety net of 24 other players to compensate for lapses. Tanks need to handle sustained burst damage while maintaining threat on adds. Healers must keep a tank NPC alive under escalating pressure. Attempts are unlimited. There is no lockout. Go in flasked, fed, and mentally prepared to fail several times. Then go in again.

Do not underestimate this: The solo trial has claimed the progress of many players who sailed through Tier 14 and 15 raids. Your raid gear does not carry you here. Mechanics do. Know your interrupts. Know your movement. Know your role.

Select Your Epic Cloak: ilvl 600, Best Pre-Legendary Cape

You survived Wrathion's pet dragon. Meet him at Mason's Folly in the Veiled Stair to collect your reward: a choice of six item level 600 epic cloaks, each with a role-specific passive proc themed around Pandaria's Celestials. The options are Tigerfang WrapItem #95633 (Agility DPS), Tigerclaw CapeItem #95634 (Strength DPS), Oxhoof GreatcloakItem #95636 (Tank, Stamina), Oxhorn BladebreakerItem #95635 (Tank, Strength), Jadefire DrapeItem #95637 (Caster DPS), and Cranewing CloakItem #95638 (Healer). Choose the one matching your main spec. You can purchase additional epic cloaks for 10,000 gold each from the Blacktalon Quartermaster in the Veiled Stair if you want variants for other specs: or for transmog completionism, which is a legitimate and noble pursuit.

Chapter IV: Celestial Blessings: The Heart of Phase 4

Chapter V: Judgment of the Black Prince: The Timeless Isle Finale

Travel to the Timeless Isle. Meet Wrathion (Again).

Phase 5 opens the Timeless Isle: a sandbox zone southeast of the Jade Forest, accessible via portal from the Jade Forest or by flying if enabled. Wrathion is already there, naturally, waiting at the Celestial Court in the center of the island as though he has been expecting you for months. He presents two final quests that can be completed simultaneously: Secrets of the Timeless Isle and The Emperor's Way. The Timeless Isle itself is a gloriously chaotic zone filled with rare elite creatures, hidden treasure chests, one-time events, and the very real possibility of being murdered by a giant crab while you are trying to loot a chest. Timeless Coins drop from almost every activity on the island and form the primary currency of everything here.

Collect 5,000 Timeless Coins. Do Not Accidentally Spend Them.

The Secrets of the Timeless Isle quest requires you to turn in 5,000 Timeless Coins to Wrathion: meaning you need them in your currency tab at the moment of turn-in, not simply accumulated over time. This is not a subtle distinction. The Timeless Isle generates coins from every possible source: killing rare elites (many worth 100–500 coins each), opening treasure chests scattered across the island, participating in events like the Blazing Way pyres, and completing the Celestial Court encounters. 5,000 coins is achievable in a few focused hours of island exploration, but begins to sting if you have enthusiastically spent coins on vendor items before completing the quest. Do not enthusiastically spend coins on vendor items before completing the quest. Currency #697

Critical Warning: The Timeless Isle vendor sells armor tokens, mounts, pets, and toys for Timeless Coins. These are tempting. Resist until you have turned in your 5,000. Your future legendary self will thank you.

Defeat All Four August Celestials as World Bosses

The Emperor's Way demands you defeat all four  NPC #71952NPC #71955NPC #71953, and  NPC #71954: as world raid bosses at the Celestial Court on the Timeless Isle. In original Mists of Pandaria, only one Celestial spawned per week on a strict rotation, meaning this step could take up to four weeks to complete. In MoP Classic, all four Celestials are present and rotate more dynamically. Join an existing raid group at the Celestial Court: or, thanks to faction-tagging, you do not even need to formally be in the raid, just be present and attacking. These bosses also drop Tier 16 set tokens and are worth killing weekly for gear regardless of quest progress. Two birds, one legendary stone.

Turn in A Pandaren Legend. Transform Your Cloak. Become Legendary.

After completing both Timeless Isle quests, Wrathion bestows A Pandaren Legend, sending you to meet him at the entrance to Mogu'shan Palace in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. Hand it in, and Wrathion rewards you with the Timeless Essence of the Black DragonflightItem #102513. Use this item on your epic cloak. Watch it transform. The item level jumps to 608. The name changes. The proc appears. And then: if you are in a populated area: the legendary wing visual will appear on your character's back, visible to everyone around you, announcing that you have finally, finally, after months of raiding and grinding and winning battlegrounds and farming coins on a magical time-locked island, done it. Your server announces your name at the Mogu'shan Palace entrance. You have achieved the Legend of Pandaria Feat of Strength. This is your moment.

Additional Essences: The Blacktalon Quartermaster sells further Timeless Essences for 125 Lesser Charms of Good Fortune (with potential rep discounts), allowing you to legendary-upgrade additional epic cloaks for off-specs or alts.

Kill Garrosh. Complete the Journey. Unlock Ordos Forever.

One final task remains: Judgment of the Black Prince. Defeat Garrosh Hellscream at the end of the Siege of Orgrimmar: at any difficulty including Flexible: and return to Wrathion. This concludes Chapter V and the entire legendary questline. You earn the Chapter V: Judgment of the Black Prince achievement and the permanent title Legend of Pandaria. More importantly, every character on your account on this Classic realm now has access to Ordos, the fire-god world boss behind the bridge on the Timeless Isle, who drops high-tier loot and respawns weekly. Characters without a legendary cloak are teleported out of the Ordon Sanctuary automatically: so your alts benefit from your suffering without having to repeat it. That is the MoP Classic account-wide legendary experience in a nutshell: one character endures everything, and everyone else reaps the rewards. NPC #74272

Chapter V: Judgment of the Black Prince: The Timeless Isle Finale

All Six Legendary Cloaks: Choose Your Celestial

After completing Chapter V, your epic cloak transforms into its legendary counterpart. Each cloak is themed around a specific Celestial and carries a powerful on-equip proc. All six are item level 608. Your first is free with questline completion; additional variants cost 125 Lesser Charms of Good Fortune from the Blacktalon Quartermaster for those who want the full transmog collection or off-spec upgrades.

All Six Legendary Cloaks: Choose Your Celestial

Conclusion: You Have Worn a Dragon's Trust on Your Back

The MoP Classic Legendary Cloak questline is, in the calmest possible assessment, an absolutely unreasonable amount of content for a single item. Across five chapters, you have ground reputation with a faction run by a literally teenage dragon, murdered the same SHA twice, endured the RNG lottery of Titan Runestones, won PvP matches in battlegrounds you had no intention of entering, solo-battled a cosmic dragon construct to prove your worth to a lizard, collected coins on a time-frozen island, and defeated four divine guardians just to qualify for a cape upgrade. Then you killed a warchief. And now you have wings.

But here is the thing about the legendary cloak farming experience in Mists of Pandaria Classic: it works. The questline is long because it is designed to span an entire expansion, and crossing the finish line feels genuinely earned. The Timeless Isle legendary upgrade, the wing visual proc firing in the middle of a progression pull, the account-wide Ordos unlock giving your alts a world boss to kill every week: these are the fruits of months of calculated, methodical, occasionally infuriating effort. Wrathion was right. You are a legend of Pandaria. It only took the entire expansion to prove it.

Now go kill Ordos. You have earned it. Every single week, forever.

Conclusion: You Have Worn a Dragon's Trust on Your Back

The MoP Classic Legendary Cloak Farming Guide FAQ

Can alts access Ordos without completing the legendary cloak questline themselves

Yes. The Ordos unlock is fully account-wide on your Classic realm. Once one character completes the legendary questline and obtains a legendary cloak, every alternate character on that same realm can enter the Ordon Sanctuary and fight Ordos each week without repeating any part of the questline.

What is the fastest way to collect Timeless Coins for the 5,000 coin quest

Targeting Timeless Isle rare elites is the most efficient approach: many award between 100 and 500 coins per kill. Combine this with opening treasure chests scattered across the island and participating in Blazing Way events. A focused two-hour session should comfortably yield 5,000 coins without grinding standard mobs.

Is the legendary cloak actually best in slot during Siege of Orgrimmar, or does Heroic gear replace it

At ilvl 608, the legendary cloak is best in slot for the back slot throughout all of Siege of Orgrimmar, including Heroic difficulty. No back piece from SoO Normal or Heroic surpasses it in combined stats and proc value. It remains relevant for the entirety of Phase 5 progression.

Do Secrets of the Empire and Titan Runestones drop from Flexible difficulty Siege of Orgrimmar

Secrets of the Empire drop from the first eight bosses of Siege of Orgrimmar as a Phase 5 catch-up mechanic and are available on Flexible difficulty. Titan Runestones drop exclusively from the last six bosses of Throne of Thunder and do not drop from Siege of Orgrimmar at any difficulty.

Can I buy additional legendary cloaks for other specs after completing the questline

Yes. The Blacktalon Quartermaster in the Veiled Stair sells additional Timeless Essences of the Black Dragonflight for 125 Lesser Charms of Good Fortune each, subject to reputation discounts. Apply each Essence to the corresponding epic cloak variant to create additional legendary cloaks for off-specs or transmog collection.
