What Tier 5 Actually Means

Under the current Destiny 2 gear tier system, Tier 5 weapons get three perk options per column instead of one, enhanced traits, an upgraded origin trait, and a smug little cosmetic flourish so everyone knows you got lucky. Tier doesn't override bad perk synergy, but nobody in Crucible chat is going to explain that to you mid-death.

It's an aggressive frame shotgun, meaning it hits like it's mad at you personally. Here's what you're working with before perks get involved.

For actual gunfights, the play is threat detector and opening shot, paired with a range masterwork if you can find one. This is what most guides mean when they promise a Felwinter's Lie PvP build that doesn't embarrass you. Stability masterwork works too, it just makes you less of a menace and more of a nuisance.

Shot Package multiplies your effective range if you stack it with barrels like Full Choke, which is either the most broken interaction in the shotgun sandbox or a fun historical footnote, depending who's asking.

How to Actually Get It

This part hasn't changed since Iron Banner's earliest, most miserable seasons, so pay attention.

1. Play Iron Banner matches. It's rotating on a roughly three-to-four week cadence, so it will be gone before you finish reading this sentence.
2. End-of-match reward drops are your best shot at a guaranteed Tier 5 roll. Ranking well helps.
3. Complete the Iron Banner weapon-focused seal, then go bother the Iron Banner vendor.
4. Spend Iron Banner ciphers plus 15,000 glimmer to decode a weapon focus. It's a gamble, and the postmaster will eat your loot out of spite regardless.

Iron Banner ciphers themselves come from winning matches, so the fastest route to a real Felwinter's Lie farm is just winning more games, which is advice as old as the mode itself and just as useless when your team goes 4-and-16.

PvE, Because Not Everyone Wants to Suffer in Crucible

If you're building around ad-clear or boss damage instead of ruining strangers' days, look at Incandescent for solar chip damage, or Bait and Switch and Trench Barrel if you're stacking special-weapon damage buffs. It won't top a Destiny 2 shotgun meta tier list for raids, but it's a fine sidearm to your actual damage dealer.

Is It Worth the Grind

Yes. It was a menace in the original game and it's a menace now, hitting like a truck at ranges shotguns have no business reaching. If you already sank hours into the Iron Banner Felwinter's Lie chase back when it first reappeared, the Tier 5 version is a straight upgrade and worth re-rolling for.
