WoW Midnight Torment's Rise Guide

You've cleared ten perfectly reasonable Delves in WoW Midnight Season 1: slapped some spiders, closed a few portals, patted Valeera on the head. You thought you were done. Adorable. Blizzard built Torment's Rise specifically to audit every bad habit you've gotten away with until now, package them into a Void-flavored domanaar named Nullaeus, and personally deliver them back to your face at 10% stacking damage increase per stack. This is the premier WoW Torment's Rise guide: and yes, it will be brutally specific about every soul-crushing detail.

What you're probably wondering:

  • Is Torment's Rise actually as painful as everyone says: or are people just bad?
  • Why does Nullaeus summon adds AND go immune at the same time, as if one mechanic wasn't enough?
  • What gear do you actually need before attempting Tier ?? without embarrassing yourself?
  • Can you genuinely solo this at Tier ?? and earn the Arcanovoid Construct mount, or is that pure cope?
  • Which Valeera curios are mandatory and which ones are cope-tier padding?
  • What seasonal achievements are permanently gone at Season 2 launch and why does Blizzard do this to us?

01 Overview: Torment's Rise

Torment's Rise is the Season 1 Nemesis Delve for World of Warcraft Midnight Delves: a purpose-built encounter zone that sits entirely outside the regular Delve rotation and functions as the season's capstone challenge. Unlike the other ten Delves in the lineup, this one exists purely to test whether all that lower-tier farming actually taught you anything. The answer, statistically, is often "not quite." Every bad interrupt, every misread ground effect, every overcautious cooldown decision: Torment's Rise finds them all and sends them back. It is located in the Voidstorm zone, which already has the aesthetic of someone's anxiety disorder rendered in purple architecture. Perfect setting.

Entrance: Torment's Rise Location

The Torment's Rise location in WoW Midnight is nestled in the Voidstorm zone: specifically between Nexus-Point Xenas and Obscurion Citadel. It shares the Voidstorm zone with two other Delves, which at least gives you something nearby to warm up on before Nullaeus dismantles your self-esteem. The entrance is a dedicated instance portal: you cannot stumble in accidentally. You have to consciously choose to go there, which Blizzard apparently considered a mercy.

For WoW Midnight Voidstorm delves navigation in general, the zone is the late-game area of the Midnight map. If you're flying over a zone that looks like someone weaponized a nebula, you're in the right place. Drop down near the coordinates below and look for the Nemesis Delve marker: it is distinct from regular Delve portals and should display your unlock status (locked / Tier ? available / Tier ?? available) before you commit.

Use the TomTom addon or the in-game Adventure Guide (Shift-J) to track entrance coordinates. The macro below pastes a waypoint directly into TomTom:

TomTom/way Voidstorm 52.4 38.7 Torment's Rise: Nullaeus Nemesis Delve

Unlock Gate: Torment's Rise Tier ? requires clearing any Tier 7 Delve with at least one life remaining during Midnight Season 1. Tier ?? requires clearing any Tier 10 Delve with at least one life remaining. You cannot bypass these gates. Do not waste a friend's time asking them to carry you in until you have the unlock.

Variants: Both Difficulty Tiers Explained

Torment's Rise runs on two difficulty variants: called Tier ? and Tier ?? in-game, because Blizzard decided mystery symbols were more intimidating than numbers and they were absolutely right. This is the comprehensive breakdown of every meaningful mechanical difference between the two, because knowing that "Tier ?? is harder" is the least useful sentence ever written about a video game.

Mechanic / Variable

Tier ?: Entry Nemesis

Tier ??: Challenge Nemesis

Unlock Requirement

Clear any Tier 7 Delve with 1+ life remaining (Season 1)

Clear any Tier 10 Delve with 1+ life remaining (Season 1)

Recommended ilvl

255 average (Blizzard stated)

No stated minimum: implied 272+ based on community testing

Group Restriction

Solo or group of up to 5

Solo or group; solo required for Let Me Solo Him: Nullaeus

Devouring Essence Damage

Moderate shadow DoT: manageable with defensives

Significantly amplified: stacks with Umbral Rage aura; lethal if interrupt missed

Nullaeus Add Count (Dread Portal)

Standard add wave: manageable AoE burst kills them

Higher add count; adds are tankier; Oblivion Shell window is extended proportionally

Umbral Rage Stacks

Stacks slowly; manageable if adds die fast

Stacks rapidly; each Dread Portal phase that drags extends enrage window exponentially

Pactsworn Trash

Present from Tier 4+ in all Delves; Nemesis Strongbox upgraded on kill

Same system: kills still matter for Strongbox loot quality

Achievement Eligibility

My Shady Nemesis only

All four seasonal achievements (My Shady Nemesis, Lighting the Dark, Let Me Solo Him, Fabled LMSH)

Valeera Role Recommendation

Healer preferred; DPS viable with good self-healing class

Healer mandatory unless you are grossly overgeared

Weekly Delver's Bounty Interaction

Bring Nullaeus to 50% via Beacon of Hope in any Delve instead to avoid wasting lives here

Same: Beacon available from Naleidea Rivergleam for 5,000 Undercoins

Pro tip: The Beacon of Hope, purchased from Naleidea Rivergleam at the Delver's Headquarters in Silvermoon for 5,000 Undercoins, lets you summon Nullaeus into any regular Delve after the checkpoint. Drag him to 50% HP, loot the gold pile containing your weekly Delver's Bounty, and collect your Hidden Trove without entering Torment's Rise at all. Efficient. Cowardly. Magnificent.

Boss Tactics: Nullaeus, the Torment's Rise Boss Guide WoW

The Torment's Rise boss guide WoW all roads lead to: Nullaeus is a Domanaar: a Void-aligned entity who apparently decided the best use of his eons of existence was designing a three-mechanic boss encounter specifically tailored to punish anyone who took their interrupts for granted. He is Midnight's answer to Zekvir and Ky'veza from TWW: the season's singular mechanical checkpoint, tuned for players who have cleared Tier 7 (for Tier ?) or Tier 10 (for Tier ??). Install Deadly Boss Mods before entering. This is not a suggestion.

Phase 1: Opening Barrage (100% HP → First Dread Portal)

Nullaeus opens with Devouring Essence (Spell ID: 1256358): a 2.5-second cast that inflicts Shadow damage every 2 seconds for 18 seconds. This is presumably interruptible and should be interrupted every single time it is cast. Missing this interrupt on Tier ?? while Umbral Rage is stacking is how runs end. There is no dramatic recovery window. It simply ends.

Rotate standard defensives to absorb any Devouring Essence ticks you cannot avoid. Have Valeera in Healer mode topped up before each cast. Keep moving to avoid any incidental ground effects that may accompany this phase, and do not tunnel on damage output at the cost of your interrupt CD availability.

Phase 2: Dread Portal & Oblivion Shell (Periodic, Repeating)

Nullaeus periodically casts Dread Portal, which simultaneously summons a wave of Void adds and activates Oblivion Shell: a buff that reduces all damage Nullaeus takes by 100%. He is literally unkillable until every add in that wave is dead. The design intent is clear: kill adds immediately and efficiently, or watch Nullaeus stack Umbral Rage into an enrage state that makes the rest of the fight academic.

On Tier ??, the add count is higher and add durability is increased. Use your highest-damage AoE cooldowns immediately on add spawn: not after positioning, not after a GCD of single-target. Immediately. Valeera's Porcelain Blade Tip curio provides meaningful burst during add phases; the Overflowing Voidspire utility curio stacks into a relevant damage/healing window once Oblivion Shell drops and normal damage resumes.

Phase 3: Umbral Rage Enrage (Escalating Pressure)

Umbral Rage is a stacking aura Nullaeus gains: each stack increases his outgoing damage by 10% and the stacks accumulate every time a Dread Portal add wave lingers too long or Devouring Essence DoTs are allowed to tick unimpeded. This is not a traditional enrage timer with a single threshold. It is a gradual, compounding pressure system. At 3 stacks you are uncomfortable. At 5+ stacks on Tier ?? you are effectively dead regardless of cooldown usage.

The entire fight is a race against your own slowness during add phases. Every extra second a Dread Portal add lives is a future Umbral Rage stack. Plan your burst rotation before you enter the instance: not while Nullaeus is 30% HP and your palms are sweating.

Ability

Type

Counter

Devouring Essence

Shadow DoT: 2.5s cast, 18s duration

Kick on cast start; pop defensive if cast goes through

Dread Portal

Add summon + triggers Oblivion Shell

Dump all AoE cooldowns; Oblivion Shell drops when adds die

Oblivion Shell

100% damage reduction buff on Nullaeus

Switch to adds only; DPS on boss is entirely wasted

Umbral Rage

Stacking aura: +10% damage per stack

Kill adds fast, interrupt DoT: stacks never fall off during fight

Quests in Torment's Rise

Torment's Rise carries one seasonal quest directly tied to defeating Nullaeus. This is the WoW Torment's Rise quest chain: short, brutal, and rewarding the kind of toy that communicates exactly how you feel about the experience. The quest becomes available once you have Torment's Rise Tier ? unlocked (Tier 7 cleared with 1+ life remaining during Season 1). Pick it up from the Delver's Headquarters at The Bazaar in Silvermoon before you enter: do not be the person who clears Nullaeus and realizes they forgot to grab the quest.

Gear Requirements: WoW Torment's Rise

This is the WoW Torment's Rise Tier 11 guide truth no one wants to hear: gear requirements for Torment's Rise are not a hard block, but they function as one in practice. For Tier ? difficulty, Blizzard's published recommended average item level is 255: which corresponds roughly to Heroic dungeon gear or sustained Delve farming at Tiers 6–7 pushing toward Champion track rewards. Below 255 on Tier ?, expect every Devouring Essence tick you fail to interrupt to be a meaningful chunk of your health bar, and expect Umbral Rage stacks to feel genuinely alarming rather than merely stressful.

For Tier ??, Blizzard declined to publish a recommended item level: a choice that is either respectful of player autonomy or a polite way of saying "figure it out and stop emailing us." Community consensus from Season 1 early clears places comfortable Tier ?? solo attempts in the 272–278 ilvl range (Hero track gear), with Mythic track players (285+) describing the encounter as "spicy but clean." The gear ceiling matters less than interrupt discipline: a 260 ilvl player who never lets Devouring Essence DoT tick will survive longer than a 280 ilvl player who treats interrupts as optional. The gear requirement is a floor, not a ceiling. Your interrupts are the ceiling. Don't pretend otherwise. Additionally, Valeera must be leveled to 20+ for her curios to provide meaningful value during the Nullaeus encounter: under-leveled Valeera at Tier ?? is a trap.

Conclusion

Torment's Rise is exactly what a Nemesis Delve should be: uncomfortable, specific, and deeply insulting to every lazy habit you built in easier content. Nullaeus is not a mechanically complex boss: there are three abilities and a stacking enrage. The complexity is entirely in you: your interrupt timing, your add kill priority, your cooldown management, and your willingness to stop doing damage for two seconds to handle mechanics. The bosses in previous seasons: Zekvir, Ky'veza: all had the same lesson embedded in them: execution matters more than output. Nullaeus agrees, and he is happy to demonstrate that agreement repeatedly until you either understand it or your seasonal clock expires.

The rewards are worth it. The Arcanovoid Construct is a full standalone mount: not a costume, not a particle effect: a genuinely visually distinct mechanical reward that tells anyone who sees it exactly what you did during Midnight Season 1. The titles communicate the same. Get in, clear your tiers, do the quest, and ride out before Season 2 takes it all away. The Void waits for no one's gear progression.

WoW Midnight Torment's Rise Guide FAQ

What item level do I actually need to clear Torment's Rise Tier ?? solo?

Blizzard gave no official Tier ?? ilvl floor. Community consensus from Season 1 early clears sits at 272–278 (Hero track). Interrupt discipline compensates for roughly 10–15 ilvl of deficit: bad interrupters die at 285, good players clear at 265.

Can I use the Beacon of Hope to get Delver's Bounty without entering Torment's Rise?

Yes. Buy the Beacon of Hope for 5,000 Undercoins from Naleidea Rivergleam, use it after the checkpoint in any standard Delve, bring Nullaeus to 50%, and loot your weekly Bounty. Entirely valid. Highly recommended if you are not chasing achievements.

Is the Arcanovoid Construct mount really gone at Season 2: no vendor, no catch-up, nothing?

Confirmed: the mount is tied exclusively to Let Me Solo Him: Nullaeus and becomes unobtainable when Season 2 launches. Blizzard has not announced any catch-up mechanism. Historically, Nemesis Delve mounts have not returned in subsequent seasons.

Which Valeera curios should I bring to the Nullaeus fight in Torment's Rise?

Porcelain Blade Tip (Combat) and Overflowing Voidspire (Utility) are the consensus best-in-slot for Nullaeus. Porcelain handles add burst phases; Voidspire stacks into meaningful windows once Oblivion Shell drops between phases.

Do the Pactsworn trash mobs matter inside Torment's Rise itself?

Pactsworn mobs (gray helm icons on the minimap) appear in all regular Delves at Tier 4+, not inside Torment's Rise itself. Killing them upgrades the Nemesis Strongbox loot quality across your Delve runs: it is worth clearing every marked Pactsworn pack you see during standard farming sessions.

Is Valeera Sanguinar in Healer role actually mandatory for Torment's Rise Tier??

Not mathematically mandatory: self-healing specs like Blood DK or Resto Druid can justify DPS Valeera. Practically, for the majority of specs and ilvl ranges where Tier ?? is being attempted, Healer Valeera is the difference between sustainable runs and wall-headbutting sessions. Default to Healer unless you have a compelling reason not to.
