Phase 3 drops and Mother Shahraz is waiting. Our Shadow Resistance guide covers every BiS item, Heart of Darkness priority, and Shahraz strategy: veri

Shadow Resistance in TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 3 is a whole-raid stat for Mother Shahraz. Unlike Frost or Nature resistance in Phase 2, which concerned specific tanks, Shadow Resistance for Shahraz concerns every raider who is not one of the three tanks absorbing Saber Lash. That is twenty-two people in a 25-man raid who need meaningful Shadow Resistance before your first pull. The gear to achieve this comes almost entirely from Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, and Tailoring recipes gated behind Heart of Darkness drops from Black Temple and Hyjal Summit trash. The circle is intentional. The suffering is optional, if you plan ahead. The suffering is mandatory if you do not.

Strategic Context & Optimization |
|
Hard Cap (Buffed) |
365 |
Required for Level 73 bosses. Any point beyond this provides zero mitigation. This is a strict ceiling. |
|
Recommended Unbuffed (Farm) |
~295 |
Reach this via full crafted gear, neck, and cloak. Adding Prayer of Shadow Protection (+70) hits the 365 cap exactly. |
|
Recommended Unbuffed (Early) |
~150 |
Viable for early Mother Shahraz attempts if your guild has high DPS and fast kill times. |
|
Prayer of Shadow Protection |
+70 |
Rank 2 Priest buff. Does not stack with Paladin Aura. Coordinate with your raid lead before the pull. |
The Shadow Resistance unbuffed cap WoW TBC Classic Anniversary target depends on your guild's DPS output. With the encounter in its post-nerf state on Anniversary servers, guilds with competitive kill times have cleared Shahraz with raiders running 100–150 unbuffed Shadow Resistance. This is realistic for Phase 3 week one when Heart of Darkness supply is limited. The full unbuffed target of ~295: which combined with Prayer of Shadow Protection puts you at the cap: is the comfortable farm standard. Build toward it progressively as Hearts become available.
Stacking Rules:Shadow Resistance Aura (Paladin, +70) and Prayer of Shadow Protection (Priest, +70) do not stack. Gift of the Wild from Druids (+27 all resist) stacks with both. Flask of Chromatic Wonder (+35 all resist) stacks with all of the above. There is no Shadow Resistance totem in TBC: Shaman contribute through their own resist gear and, on Horde, through Bloodlust.
Shadow Resistance Raid Encounters: WoW TBC Classic Anniversary
Two bosses in Black Temple make Shadow Resistance relevant for TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 3. One makes it relevant for the entire raid. The other makes it relevant for one specific Warlock who has presumably accepted their career trajectory

Two items apply to every single class regardless of armor type. These are your first and most efficient purchases. Neither requires you to know your armor type. Both are anchored in the list of things your raid cannot afford to skip.

The Night's End cloak is the single most Heart of Darkness-efficient crafted piece in the game. One Heart of Darkness, forty Shadow Resistance, worn by every class, tailored by any Tailor at 375 skill. Your Tailors should be crafting these the first week Hearts become available. If your guild's Tailors are not prepared for this, they should be made aware in advance, ideally with enough notice to respond before you are standing at the BT entrance wondering where the cloaks are.

Warriors wear plate and use the Shadesteel set from Blacksmithing. All recipes purchased from Okuno in Black Temple. Protection Warriors are among the three tanks who absorb Saber Lash and typically wear normal tanking gear for Shahraz: however, off-tanks not in the Saber Lash rotation still require Shadow Resistance gear. Arms and Fury Warriors wear the full set as DPS.

Warrior Total (Full Crafted + Enchants, unbuffed): Neck 40 + Cloak 40 (+15 enchant) + Bracers 40 + Girdle 54 + Greaves 72 (+8 Shadow Armor Kit) + Sabots 54 (+8 Kit) + Head ~30 (+20 Glyph) + Shoulders ~20 (+7 Inscription) + Chest ~20 (+8 Kit) + Hands ~20 (+8 Kit) = approximately 296–310 SR unbuffed. Add Prayer of Shadow Protection (+70) = at or above cap.
Paladins are plate wearers and use the identical Shadesteel set as Warriors. Holy Paladins and Retribution Paladins wear the full set. Protection Paladins tanking Saber Lash wear normal tanking gear. Protection Paladins in groups not assigned to Saber Lash wear Shadow Resistance gear. Paladins also provide Shadow Resistance Aura (+70 SR, party-wide, does not stack with Prayer of Shadow Protection): dedicate at least one Paladin specifically to this aura during Shahraz. The aura does not require them to skip their Shadow Resistance gear. They wear both. They are Paladins. They can handle it.
Gear table is identical to Warrior above. See the Shadesteel crafting materials section for exact mat quantities.

Druids wear leather and use the Redeemed Soul set from Leatherworking. Feral Druid tanks in the Saber Lash rotation wear normal tanking gear. Balance and Restoration Druids, and Feral off-specs not in the Saber Lash group, wear the full Redeemed Soul set. Resto Druids also provide Gift of the Wild (+27 all resistances), which stacks with the Paladin/Priest raid-wide buff and should always be active during Shahraz attempts.

Rogues wear leather and use the Redeemed Soul set. All three Rogue specializations: Assassination, Combat, Subtlety: use identical gear. Rogues in melee stand behind Shahraz at all times, which provides some natural distance from the tanks during Saber Lash, but they still receive Fatal Attraction and all beam types and must be properly geared. A Rogue arguing that they should skip Shadow Resistance gear because they are "in the back" is a Rogue who has not been killed by Fatal Attraction yet. They will be. Gear table is identical to Druid above: use the Redeemed Soul set.
Hunters wear mail and use the Shackled Souls set from Leatherworking. Beast Mastery, Marksmanship, and Survival all use the same resistance gear: your spec does not change what you wear for Shahraz, only how much damage you fail to do while wearing it. Hunters should position themselves in the ranged group well away from melee so that Fatal Attraction does not result in them teleporting into the tanks. This is a positioning note, not a Shadow Resistance note, but it keeps coming up in wipe reports so it lives here now.

Shamans wear mail and use the Shackled Souls set. Enhancement, Elemental, and Restoration Shamans all use the same gear. Restoration Shamans are particularly important here because they are also likely providing Bloodlust/Heroism and chain healing through Fatal Attraction damage. Wearing Shadow Resistance gear does not reduce their ability to do this, though it does reduce their throughput stats, which is the correct trade for keeping them alive long enough to heal anyone at all. Note: there is no Shadow Resistance totem. Shamans contribute resistance through their own gear and Bloodlust. The absence of a Shadow totem is not an excuse for anything. Gear table is identical to Hunter above: use the Shackled Souls set.
Mages wear cloth and use the Soulguard set from Tailoring. Frost, Fire, and Arcane Mages all use identical Shadow Resistance gear: the spec that delivers the most damage on Shahraz is the spec wearing the correct resistance gear, because the spec wearing no resistance gear is the spec dying to Fatal Attraction. The Soulguard Bracers and Soulguard Girdle require Ashtongue Friendly. The Soulguard Leggings and Soulguard Slippers require Ashtongue Honored. Plan accordingly.

Warlocks wear cloth and use the Soulguard set for Shahraz. Affliction, Demonology, and Destruction Warlocks all use identical gear for this encounter. The gear table is identical to Mage above.
Additionally, one Warlock is typically designated as the ranged demon tank for Illidan Phase 2. This Warlock needs approximately 150–200 unbuffed Shadow Resistance, which the neck plus cloak plus bracers plus consumables achieves comfortably. The Illidan Warlock tank does not need to cap at 365: they need enough Shadow Resistance to survive the demon phase at range while maintaining sustained threat. The full crafted set is recommended for Shahraz regardless of whether the Warlock also tanks Illidan. Two separate encounters, same gear, which is the most sensible thing about this entire section.
Shadow Resistance Tanking Guide TBC Classic Anniversary: Warlock Illidan Setup: Stack the neck (Medallion of Karabor), cloak (Night's End + cloak enchant), bracers (Soulguard Bracers), Glyph of Shadow Warding on head, Inscription of Endurance on shoulders, and Flask of Chromatic Wonder. With Prayer of Shadow Protection active, this reaches approximately 150–180 SR: sufficient for the Illidan Phase 2 demon form. Fill remaining item slots with your best DPS/threat gear. The Warlock tanking Illidan should prioritize maintaining aggro and staying alive, in that order, and these goals require different items in different slots. Shadow Resistance is for survival. Spell Power is for threat. Find the balance before the encounter, not during it.
Priests wear cloth and use the Soulguard set. Holy, Discipline, and Shadow Priests all use identical Shadow Resistance gear. Priests are also the source of Prayer of Shadow Protection (Rank 2, +70 SR, raid-wide), which is mandatory for Shahraz. The Priest who casts this buff should also themselves wear full Shadow Resistance gear. A Priest arguing they cannot wear resistance gear because it reduces their healing output is a Priest who has not done the math on how much healing they contribute while dead. The gear table is identical to Mage above. Use the Soulguard set.
The Shadow Resistance crafting professions TBC Classic Anniversary section contains the exact material quantities needed for every piece of every set across all four armor types. These numbers are verified. Stock them in advance. The Auction House will not have sympathy for the person who begins farming Primal Shadow after Phase 3 launches.

Cloth Wearers Cost One Extra HoD: The Soulguard Leggings costs 4 Hearts of Darkness compared to 3 for the mail and leather equivalents, and 3 for the plate equivalent. Over a 25-man raid, this means cloth wearers collectively require more Hearts per player than plate, mail, or leather. If your raid is unusually caster-heavy, adjust your Heart distribution policy to account for this before arguments start. They will start regardless. Having the policy reduces their duration.
Enchants fill the slots the crafted sets cannot: head, shoulders, cloak, legs, chest, hands, and boots all accept Shadow Resistance augments of varying potency. Every slot with an empty enchant that could have held Shadow Resistance is a decision that costs the raid. Make the decision to fill them. Every one of them.

Everything else can be prepared now. Everything else should be prepared now. The following is what you farm, where you farm it, and why you should not wait.
The Shadow Resistance gear priority TBC Classic Anniversary order is determined by Shadow Resistance gained per Heart of Darkness spent. Maximize resistance per HoD first. Save expensive pieces for when supply catches up.

A green with enchant is worth more SR than an epic without one.
The WoW TBC Classic Anniversary Shadow Resistance stat priority for the Shahraz encounter is one of the simpler stat priority calculations in all of TBC, and yet it is the one most frequently argued about in guild Discords.
Common Mistake: Raiders who delay building Shadow Resistance gear because they are "optimizing DPS/healing" for earlier bosses in Black Temple are making a trade that costs the raid multiple Shahraz wipes. The crafting materials and Hearts of Darkness invested in your resistance set do not come at the expense of your Phase 3 performance on any other boss. They are a parallel investment. Begin accumulating them the moment Phase 3 opens, regardless of where in Black Temple your guild's progression currently sits.

No. Both grant +70 Shadow Resistance but do not stack. Use one per raid group and communicate which before the pull.
Heart of Darkness: it drops only in Black Temple and Hyjal Summit trash. Prioritize Night's End cloak first at one Heart of Darkness per piece.
