Path of Exile 2 Build Planner Guide | Patch 0.5
PoE2 0.5 dropped and it's massive. New crafting, a rebuilt endgame hub, 40+ uniques, Lineage Supports, and two new ascendancy classes.
Patch 0.5: Return of the Ancients: is the biggest overhaul PoE2 has seen since Early Access launched. It's not a content patch. It's a statement. The economy was gutted and rebuilt from scratch, the endgame got a new beating heart called The Fortress, and over 40 new unique items arrived that don't just add stats: they invent new archetypes. If you played before 0.5 and think you know how to gear a character, congratulations: you don't anymore. Welcome back to the tutorial.
This guide covers every major system in depth: crafting, endgame structure, combat mechanics, standout uniques, and the two new Ascendancy classes. No filler, no "check back later for more info." Let's go through PoE 2 character progression.
The single biggest economic shock of 0.5 is blunt: Recombination is dead. The Omen of Recombination item was deleted from the game on patch day. Every existing one vanished on login. The Recombinator system is disabled. Moment of silence for every hoarder who had a stash tab full of them.
The void it left is now filled by two interlocking systems: Verisium Runeforging and Alloys. Together they shift Path of Exile 2's crafting from chaotic gambling toward something approaching actual strategy. Novel concept.
The new league mechanic generates Remnants in every zone: objects with 2 to 10 slots. Adding Runeshapes to a Remnant modifies the item it creates and spawns more monster waves, each with runic buffs. The riskier the crafting, the harder the content guarding it. Poetry.
Killing those monsters drops Verisium metal, spent at Farrow (new Act 1 NPC) to apply Runic Ward: a defensive buffer that kicks in when you hit 1 HP. For items below level 55, it's free. For ilvl 55+, you sacrifice a portion of the armor/evasion/energy shield. A bargain that occasionally isn't.
Key Mechanic The Runic Ward absorbs incoming damage only when you're at 1 HP. It regenerates independently of your health pool. Think of it as a second life bar you have to pay for with stats. Budget accordingly.
Unlocked in Act 3, the Unique Verisium Runeforging system lets you upgrade any unique weapon or armor below level 55 to endgame-relevant bases. Low-level uniques with powerful mechanics: like Ironbound or Facebreaker: are no longer obsolete by Act 5. For the first time in ARPG history, that cool level 11 bow you found can follow you into red maps. Remarkable.
Alloys replace the old Entities and Recombination Tools. There are 13 new types. Each one removes a random property from a rare item and adds a specific guaranteed property unavailable through normal means. Think of them as targeted surgery on your gear: messy entry, clean exit on PoE 2 mirror service.

The Swift Alloy on a belt is particularly filthy for boss farmers: passive flask charge generation without killing anything. If you run a defensive flask-dependent build and you're not using this, you're doing charity work for the bosses.
For SSF players and RNG-traumatized veterans, the Genesis Tree is the patch's most comforting addition. Find a Wombgift, slot it into the tree, feed it 1,458 units of Hiveblood, wait. You get a guaranteed item level 84 base. Deterministic. Boring in the best way possible.

The crafting ecosystem has three more layers worth knowing:
The Atlas of Worlds model is gone. In its place: The Fortress, a hub that rises from the earth after completing your first Precursor Tower map. All endgame progression flows through here, including the expanded Atlas Passive Skill Tree that now has over 300 nodes. Bosses Arbiter of Ash and Burning Monolith have been relocated inside The Fortress, because apparently they needed better real estate.
The new Pinnacle Boss is the Arbiter of Divinity. For those with absurdly powerful builds, GGG built in a power-user shortcut: kill the Arbiter five times consecutively and auto-complete entire Fortress sections, instantly banking the Atlas Tree points. Casual players will take the scenic route.
The endgame now features asymmetrical Ascendancy-style bonuses through the Masters of the Atlas system. Ally with NPCs like Jado (Djinn Order) or the monster hunter Hilda. Each Master has 12 talent nodes: you can have 4 active at once. Swap them between map runs to optimize your farming strategy. The Doryani's Science storyline is also unlockable via the Corrupted Nexus, for lore addicts.
Delirium now has a dedicated hub area, The Withered Willow, with its own passive tree. The fog mechanic changed: activating a mirror now shows a progress bar for density and upcoming encounters. Map bosses in fog are always at 100% Delirium density. The endgame event Trial of Madness floods the entire Atlas with 200% density fog before unlocking the Simulacrum. Aggressive. We respect it.
Ritual got a full overhaul: new NPC Aoife in the Wildwood, new hub Caer Tarth, reworked Atlas Tree. The QoL improvement everyone actually cares about: after completing an altar, locusts visually mark the path to the next one. No more wandering like a tourist. The final Ritual reward window now drops only unique items or Omens, and unspent tribute converts into Audience with the King experience. Efficient to PoE 2 unique items.
Over 40 new uniques in 0.5. Most are interesting. Several are disgusting. A few will define the meta until 1.0 drops. Here are the PoE 2 items:

21 new Lineage Support gems let you attach the combat mechanics of Wraeclast's most powerful entities to your own skills. Defeat a faction boss; inherit their moves. It's basically harvesting their essence and making it your own. Tactically smart. Lore-appropriate. Slightly horrifying.

Tul's Avalanche, for example, likely adds a spreading freeze field to projectiles mirroring the Breachlord's boss attack. Lore-locked gameplay customization is an elegant Path of Exile 2 progress help.
0.5 introduces two new Ascendancy subclasses that fundamentally change what their base classes can do:
Illusionist monk combat. Uses runes implanted in the body to summon illusory bells on the battlefield: essentially creating AoE fields. Specializes in unarmed melee with maximum damage output, and synergizes directly with the reworked Facebreaker gloves. If you want to punch your way through endgame with supernatural bell traps, this is your class. No notes.
Wildland druidism as an Ascendancy. Spirit Walker summons spectral animal companions: stances available for Stag, Owl, and Bear: and specializes in subduing hostile beasts to control them. Pairs naturally with Sylvan's Effigy, the scepter that removes companion type restrictions so you can run bear + wolf + owl simultaneously. A one-person petting zoo with lethal tendencies.
Quality of Life Updates Worth Knowing
Important: Classic Item ChangesThe Vertex now adds levels to Curse Skill Gems only (not all gems). Shackles of the Wretched no longer reflects ailments (except Freeze) but instead grants 10–15% increased damage per curse on yourself. Self-curse builds: time to re-evaluate your entire life.

Yes. It still grants permanent flask effects and now comes with 1–3 Charm Slots built in, making it stronger than in PoE1.
