Patch 0.5.0 killed the Recombinator and added Verisium Runeforging. Our updated currency guide covers every orb, omen, and essence: what changed...
Path of Exile 2 runs a dual economy. Gold: vendor-only, untradeable: handles shops and the Alva exchange. Orbs are everything else: crafting material and trade denomination simultaneously. Every orb you pick up has three futures: applied to your gear, hoarded for a crafting step, or sold. Which one depends on your map tier and nothing else except PoE 2 boosting service.
Unlike every sensible game, there is no universal coin here. The Exalted Orb is the fractional unit. The Divine Orb is the premium denomination. In Week 1 of a fresh league, a single Divine Orb can buy more than it will ever fix on your gear. Remember that.

The Recombinator is gone in 0.5.0. Any Omen of Recombination you are hoarding will be deleted on login. Stop waiting.
These are the workhorses. They are common, cheap, and misused constantly. PoE 2 crafting currency starts here: master the flow or spend the whole league re-rolling white bases you should have PoE 2 pre-orders service.
The alt-regal sequence is: Transmutation → Augmentation → Alteration spam → Augment → Regal. Five steps, one controlled rare with one guaranteed modifier. Every other approach costs more currency for less control.

Hoard for alt-regal |
Tiered variants (Normal / Greater / Perfect) exist for Transmutation, Augmentation, Regal, Chaos, and Exalted. Greater Orbs in 0.5.0 now enforce a minimum modifier level of 44 (down from 55), making them more accessible at league start.
These are where bad decisions live. The Chaos Orb in PoE 2 is not the same beast it was in PoE 1: it is primarily a fractional trading unit. Using it to re-roll your gear before Tier 8 maps is a mistake you will make once, except buy PoE 2 Divine Orb of course.

Orb of Annulment is the most undervalued orb for crafters. One bad suffix on a near-perfect rare is all that separates you from a finished piece. Do not sell these early.
Here is where the Divine Orb farming strategy becomes relevant: and where most players destroy weeks of effort in under a minute. Divines reroll the numeric values on modifiers without changing which modifiers exist. In 0.5.0, they are cheaper than previous patches and simultaneously more necessary due to Sanctified and Corrupted endgame item interactions.
The Vaal Orb corruption mechanic in 0.5.0 has shifted. The Omen of Corruption can no longer be obtained, removing the controlled corruption option entirely. Corruption is now back to raw gambling.
These did not exist in PoE 1. They are not optional in PoE 2. If you are skipping Essences and Omens in Path of Exile 2, you are leaving free crafting determinism on the floor while praying to Chaos Orbs like it is 2013.
Applied to a Normal item, an Essence upgrades it to Magic rarity and guarantees a specific modifier type. Greater Essences upgrade Magic items directly to Rare with the guaranteed modifier included. When you know the damage type your build needs, Essences cut the re-roll loop entirely. Greater Essences with high-demand mods trade at 50+ Exalted Orbs. The Perfect Essence of Battle was nerfed in 0.5.0: skill level bonuses on weapons dropped by 2–3 tiers.
Omens sit in your inventory and trigger automatically when a matching currency is used. They are not applied directly. Omen of Sinistral Erasure removes a Suffix, Omen of Dextral removes a Prefix: these alone make Annulment crafting deterministic. Omen of Recombination is deleted on login in 0.5.0. Stop hoarding it. Omen of Corruption is also gone. The remaining Omens are stronger by comparison now that the two most powerful are removed.

Socketed directly into item sockets for stat bonuses. Three Lesser Runes vendor into one standard Rune; three standard Runes into one Greater Rune. In 0.5.0, the Runeforging system introduced via the Runes of Aldur league adds Verisium Runeforging and the Genesis Tree: a new crafting layer that builds on existing Rune slots without replacing them. Do not vendored your stacked Runes early. Wait until you understand which Verisium combinations your build wants. So buy PoE 2 Exalted Orb, and stop reading this :D
Stronger Rune variants that also function as trade currency. More powerful bonuses, rarer drops, and a non-trivial floor price in Exalted Orbs throughout the league. Treat them like Essences: use when the socket bonus matches your build, trade otherwise.
Add a specific Quality type to jewellery, enhancing certain modifier categories. Not glamorous. Fully mandatory on jewellery with the right modifier focus. Stack them, apply in bulk, stop thinking about them.
Anoint Amulets with Notable Passive Skills, or apply Delirium Effects to Waystones for layered rewards. Each type targets a different effect. The Waystone application is the more abused path: density stacking via Distilled Emotions on high-tier maps is still the fastest currency per hour method that does not require a Mirror-tier character to function.
The Atlas Tree was fully reworked in this patch. Anomaly Maps unlock at Tier 6 and their bosses drop Lineage Support Gems: the rarest gems in the game and prime trade targets. Cleansed Maps from completed clears are your primary farming loop output; protect them. Breach encounters now start as Unstable Breaches, escalating as you kill more enemies within them: density builds gain disproportionate value here.
Currency per hour peaks at Tier 8+ maps with Waystone modifiers and Distilled Delirium stacked. Everything before that is campaign logistics, not farming.

Trade it. At ~88 Exalted Orbs, it buys upgrades no early-game item is worth fixing with.
No. It deletes on login. Any you are holding are gone. Sell or use before the patch goes live.
Only when you have a Tier 1 modifier you are certain belongs in the finished item. Not before.
Yes. An Essence guarantees one modifier type; Alterations gamble. Use Essences when the mod type is known.
