Patch 0.5 launched May 29 and declared war on comfortable builds. Patch 0.5.1 arrived June 4 and did something no one predicted: it handed casters a lifeline. If your build exists to facetank through regen or stack pure Energy Shield, you are still dead. Everyone else, read on.
The PoE 2 meta has been, until this patch, a melee and bow party with casters attending as decorative furniture. 0.5.1 changed the guest list.
Bottom Line Spirit Walker and Martial Artist are still S-tier. Casters got real buffs. Blood Mage is still a corpse. Nothing has changed about that.
This is not a "feelings update." The 0.5.1 patch notes contain structural buffs to elemental casters that should have existed at launch, plus targeted fixes for several broken or non-functional mechanics.

Fix |
The caster changes are not cosmetic. Elemental non-chaos builds now access a category of support gems that was previously locked to attacks. This is the largest mid-league improvement to Path of Exile 2 caster builds since 0.1 killed Cast on Freeze Comet.
Ranking accounts for campaign smoothness, time to Tier 15 maps, and defensive baseline at level 80 without crafted gear. Anything works at 100 divines. This is not that list.

Verdict |
|
S |
Spirit Walker NEW Huntress |
Twisters + Whirling Slash. Untouched by every nerf in existence. Fastest campaign clear in the patch. |
|
S |
Martial Artist NEW Monk |
Triple Tempest Bell. Glacial Cascade boss deletion. Smoothest linear progression in the patch. |
|
S |
Invoker Monk |
Lightning + spirit scaling. Gear-independent. Consistent ladder presence since 0.1. |
|
S |
Deadeye Ranger |
Core nodes untouched. Ice Shot + Snipe. Fastest mapper in the patch. Recommended for new players. |
|
A |
Lich (EDC) Witch |
ED Contagion + Bonestorm survived untouched. Beginner-safe. Fix in 0.5.1 removes Life Reservation block. |
|
A |
Oracle Druid |
Never relied on leech. Comet and Thunderstorm still functional. 0.5.1 passive buffs help meaningfully. |
|
A |
Titan (Whirling) Warrior |
Armor and raw physical mitigation are premium stats now. Benefits directly from ES nerf meta. |
|
A |
Witchhunter (Grenades) Mercenary |
Grenade archetype untouched. Explosive available Act 1, Zone 1. Button count is a personality test. |
|
B |
Pathfinder Ranger |
Poison took heavy hits. Functional, no longer free. Budget version is non-viable. |
|
B |
Gemling Legionnaire Mercenary |
Reworked in 0.5. Mote Buff persistence fix in 0.5.1 is meaningful. Ranking may move. |
|
B |
Chronomancer Sorceress |
Defensively reworked in 0.5. 0.5.1 caster buffs push it back up. Enthusiasts only. |
|
C |
Acolyte of Chayula Monk |
Archon elemental damage block finally fixed in 0.5.1. Still punishing. Do not touch without prior knowledge. |
|
C |
Tactician Warrior |
Deep passive tree pathing required. Works, barely. Only if you specifically want it to. |
|
D |
Blood Mage Witch |
Leech loops removed. Immortality builds dead. The archetype's identity was a patch note casualty. |
|
RIP |
Infernal Legion Necromancer Witch |
IL3 removed. Base damage halved. Ignite radius halved. This is not a nerf. This is a burial. |
The headline league starter build PoE 2 of Runes of Aldur. Channels Stag, Owl, and Bear spirits. Can summon pinnacle boss companions. The Twister + Whirling Slash interaction freezes entire screens before they finish loading. 0.5 did not touch it. 0.5.1 did not touch it. At this rate, 1.0 will be named after it.
Triple Tempest Bell detonations. Glacial Cascade boss deletion. Wind Blast builds enemy stagger from safe range. Frozen Locus freezes bosses on contact. The best melee build Runes of Aldur title belongs here by a wide margin. Gear competition week one was deranged. It still is.
Gathering Winds, Point Blank, Far Shot, and Endless Munitions were not nerfed in 0.5 or 0.5.1. Being invisible to the nerf bat is, at this point, an S-tier qualifier on its own. Ice Shot Deadeye clears campaign in 8 to 12 hours and kills pinnacle bosses in league-start gear. The recommended entry point for anyone who does not enjoy suffering.
Before 0.5.1, elemental casters were functional but starved of support options that attack builds took for granted. The core change: Attunement supports now work on elemental Skill Gems. Ice Bite. Innervate. And more. These are free damage supports that casters simply did not have access to.
Combined with 40 new elemental passive nodes on the upper half of the tree and several Infusion notable buffs, the Sorceress build guide that made sense last week looks different today. Chronomancer moves up. Oracle strengthens. Any caster running a non-chaos elemental build should rebuild their support gem setup immediately.
Who Benefits Most Oracle (Druid), Chronomancer (Sorceress), and Lich EDC builds running elemental secondary damage. Acolyte of Chayula also picks up the bug fix allowing elemental damage through Archon — finally.
Patch 0.5 removed instant leech, targeted Energy Shield recovery across the board, and kneecapped specific archetypes by name. The Path of Exile 2 meta shift is not subtle. 0.5.1 did not resurrect any of these.
Confirmed Dead If your build's core identity was regen-tanking or instant leech, no amount of gear solves it. The mechanic is gone. Rebuild or retire.
The Verisium Runesmithing crafting system introduced in 0.5 remains the most important crafting mechanic in the game. Destroy a unique, get a rune with some of its modifiers, socket it into rare gear. 60+ new runes. Beresium reforging bench for further customization. Expedition is the primary deterministic crafting source. Ritual exclusively drops omens and uniques.
Hybrid evasion and Energy Shield bases are explicitly the intended meta. Pure ES bases received targeted nerfs across the passive tree. Hybrid bases received buffs in both directions. If your gear plan involves a pure ES base, reconsider.
The Runic Ward PoE 2 system adds a secondary defensive layer that functions as a reverse energy shield buffer. Higher level armours trade base defenses for Runic Ward. Starting Act 3, Kalguuran Uniques can be Runeforged for additional properties. This system rewards planning, not panic-crafting.
The SSF league start PoE 2 case has never been stronger. Deterministic Abyss progression, Beresium crafting from Expedition, and Ritual exclusively dropping omens and uniques narrow the gap between self-found and trade significantly. Runic Ward provides defensive layers that do not require specific item hunting. The system rewards time, not currency.
Recommended SSF picks: Lich (EDC) for reliable early damage scaling, Deadeye for map speed without gear dependency, Invoker for passive survivability. Blood Mage SSF remains a theoretical exercise in how much you dislike yourself.
Spirit Walker Huntress. Untouched by both 0.5 and 0.5.1 nerfs. Fastest campaign clear confirmed across every source.
Attunement supports on elemental gems, 40 new elemental passives, Atlas passives, Lineage gem, Abyss drop fixes, several bugfixes.
Hybrid bases with Runic Ward work. Pure ES stacking past early mapping does not. Budget pure ES is non-functional.
Yes. Attunement supports on elemental gems, Infusion notable buffs, and 40 new tree nodes all apply directly.
IL3 removed, base damage halved, ignite radius halved. Unless GGG reverses course entirely, yes.
