FFXIV Nintendo Switch 2 Release Date, Price & Guide 2026

FFXIV Nintendo Switch 2 release date: August 2026. No specific day yet. Square Enix confirmed it at Fan Fest 2026 in Anaheim, then doubled down during the June 9 Nintendo Direct. The exact calendar slot remains a mystery: probably because they need a few more weeks to finish polishing the subscription form.

Early access kicks off first, running approximately one month before official service begins. That puts the full launch around September 2026. During early access, you can play for free: but your job levels are capped at 80. Consider it a very long demo where you still have to download 100 GB.

Early access: free, ~1 month, level 80 cap. Official launch: September 2026 (approx). No NSO membership required: in case Nintendo wanted at least one thing not to cost extra.

The Subscription Situation

Here is where it gets creative. The FFXIV Switch 2 subscription is entirely separate from your PC, PlayStation, or Xbox subscription. Two platforms, two invoices. Square Enix blames Nintendo; Nintendo says nothing and counts its coins. At least your character data crosses over: they are robbing you, not your progress.

If you already pay for Final Fantasy XIV subscription cost on PC or PlayStation, the Switch 2 pass drops to 50%: so around $5.50–$6.50/month on top of what you already pay. Generous. Truly. They are practically giving it away.

Cross-Progression & Content

Despite the fiscal creativity above, FFXIV cross-progression Switch 2 works exactly as it should. Your character, inventory, Gil, mounts, minions: all accessible on Switch 2 without migration. Same Square Enix account, same Lodestone character. You are paying twice for the privilege of playing the same character you already have. Progress is not the hostage. Just your bank account.

Content at launch covers everything through Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail expansion: the sixth expansion, released in 2024. That is A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker, and Dawntrail. All of it. Hundreds of hours of story, raids, trials, and side quests involving a talking potato. The Free Trial, available before you spend anything, covers content through Shadowbringers as of April 28, 2026. Roughly 100 hours free. You have no excuse not to try it.

What You Get at Launch

  • All main story content through Dawntrail 7.5
  • All six expansions
  • Full cross-progression with existing accounts
  • Joy-Con mouse mode compatibility
  • Cross-play with PC, PlayStation, Xbox servers

Evercold: The Next Expansion

Square Enix announced the seventh expansion at the same Fan Fest. Final Fantasy XIV Evercold expansion launches January 2027: five months after the Switch 2 port goes live. Naoki Yoshida, also known as Yoshi-P, revealed it during the keynote with his customary mix of enthusiasm and carefully managed expectations. Switch 2 players will not have to wait long to be current: assuming they survive the subscription math.

Free Trial: What It Covers

The FFXIV free trial Switch 2 follows the same structure as other platforms. Level cap of 60, content through Shadowbringers (from April 28, 2026), no time limit, and a carefully curated set of restrictions designed to make you want the full game. You cannot join a Free Company, use the market board, or send tells to strangers: the social features that make MMOs addictive are precisely the ones gated behind a subscription. Calculated? Absolutely.

Free Trial: unlimited playtime, levels 1-60, all content through Shadowbringers. You will hit the wall and open your wallet. It is not a question of if.

How to Play on Switch 2

The how to play FFXIV on Switch 2 process is straightforward. Download the client from the Nintendo eShop, log in or create a Square Enix account, link it to your Nintendo account, and start. Existing players connect the same Square Enix account they use everywhere else. A separate Switch 2 subscription is purchased through the Mogstation: Square Enix's billing portal, which has the aesthetic of a 2009 enterprise software dashboard and the pricing philosophy of a luxury hotel minibar.

Controls have been adapted for Switch 2 hardware, including Joy-Con mouse mode support, which means you can theoretically use your Joy-Con like a PC mouse on a flat surface. Whether this makes healing in an 8-man raid viable is a question the first wave of players will answer painfully.

Switch 2 Hardware: Can It Run It

The Nintendo Switch 2 specs are meaningfully better than its predecessor. Custom Nvidia Tegra T239, 12 GB LPDDR5X RAM, 256 GB internal storage, a 7.9-inch 1080p display at up to 120 Hz handheld, 4K/60Hz docked. For an MMO that originally shipped in 2013 and has been graphically updated in patches ever since, the Switch 2 should handle it without much complaint. Square Enix confirmed a new trailer dropped June 9, 2026 during the Nintendo Direct showcase. It looks fine. FFXIV has always been more about the story than cutting-edge visuals anyway.
