Bungie's Season 2 brings Sponsored Survival: a PvP-lite mode where one crew loots Night Marsh alone until Rooks crash the party. Here's how to survive
Bungie calls it a pvp-lite extraction shooter mode. What it actually is: you and your crew drop into Night Marsh alone, loot freely, fight AI, and wait for the clock to betray you. For about the first half of the match, you are the apex predator. Enjoy it. It ends.
This is not a PvE mode. Bungie is very careful about that phrasing. It's "PvP-lite." The difference matters when a Rook puts a bullet in your spine at minute eleven.
Active Window: June 2 – 8, 2026. Experimental status. Bungie will decide what survives based on feedback. Plan accordingly or get Marathon services.
Your crew: up to three players: infiltrates Night Marsh solo. No rival squads. Just you, the dark, and the UESC bots Night Marsh. The UESC is fully staffed and hostile. New shadow enemies Bungie won't name yet are also present, because of course they are. Use this window to loot, establish positioning, and prepare for what comes next.
Sponsored Kit Restriction: You cannot bring your own loadout. Sponsored Kits only. This signals to every Rook joining that there's no fully-geared murder squad waiting for them. A social contract enforced by gear caps.
After an unspecified grace period, the map begins backfilling with Rooks: solo scavenger extraction mode players who enter with nothing to lose and everything to gain. All other Rook queues are disabled while Sponsored Survival runs. Every Rook on the server ends up in your match. They did not choose this.
At the 18 minute match timer Marathon mark, a single exfil point spawns. One. For everyone. Your options at that moment range from diplomatic to homicidal, and the game will not judge you either way.
Match Timeline
The Sponsored Survival looting strategy is simple: you have a window of pure PvE time and you are wasting it reading this sentence. Clear UESC, hit high-value areas, establish a defensive fallback position before Rooks arrive. Do not spend the grace period admiring the swamp.
Sound and light discipline becomes critical once the backfill starts. Rooks are solo, but multiple solo players converging on your position is a problem. Don't assume a Rook is passive because they arrived with nothing. They've been looting for four minutes by now.
One exfil point. Everyone present. The Marathon exfil truce or betray decision is entirely social. Options:
None of these is the correct answer. The mode is designed to let you be a person. Choose your flavor.
Bungie describes this as an asymmetrical PvP game mode Marathon. The crew has numbers and a head start. The Rooks have nothing and therefore nothing to lose, which is arguably worse for you. The balance sits in the Sponsored Kit restriction: Rooks know they won't run into endgame-geared squads. This keeps the predator-prey dynamic slightly ambiguous.
A full PvE mode is confirmed for the latter half of Season 2. This isn't that. If you show up expecting zero player conflict, the Rooks will correct your expectations.
Open Play Week: The Marathon free to play trial week 2026 runs June 2–9 across all platforms. PS5 requires no PlayStation Plus. Progression earned during this window carries over permanently upon purchase the Marathon ranked progression.
