Season 2 changed the meta. Stack Overflow is dead. Circuit Breaker is king. Here's every gold mod ranked so you stop looting trash into your build.

In Marathon, prestige-tier gold mods don't just tweak your numbers: they fundamentally alter how a weapon behaves. A gray-rarity BRRT and a gold-rarity BRRT are mechanically the same gun until that exotic slot does something absurd, like turning your shotgun into a full-auto pellet machine with a built-in shield. Rarity in this game is attachment-based, not intrinsic. Remember that.
This guide covers every gold mod in Season 1 and what to expect in Season 2, which dropped June 2. Two new weapons arrived: the KKV-9SD SMG and D54 Battle Pistol: with their own exotic slots. Predictions included. If you disagree, you probably have under 200 hours or as alternative you can buy Marathon boost.
The full Marathon weapon tier list for gold attachments, Season 2 edition. Stack Overflow nerf changed everything: update your presets accordingly.

Tier |
Weapon / Gold Mod |
Short Verdict |
|
SS+ |
Misriah 2442 (Bully SMG) |
Reworked for S2. Full-auto on hip, slugs on ADS. Still untouchable. |
|
SS+ |
V85 Circuit Breaker |
One-tap headshot ends the conversation. Volt shotgun excellence. |
|
S |
V100 Zeus Railgun |
Fast charge, hip-fire accuracy, one-shots headshot, double-body leaves 1HP. |
|
S |
WSTR Combat Shotgun |
S tier now, B tier S2 after Stack Overflow nerf. Enjoy it while it lasts. |
|
S |
Demolition HMG |
Shield + full-auto. Wins most 1v1s. Hard to aim but worth the effort. |
|
S |
Burt (Assault Rifle) |
Gold turns it into a shotgun. Circle scope + Stack Overflow = sleeper pick. |
|
A |
Twin Tap HBR |
Most reliable gold mod in class. Build recoil, hit four shots, profit. |
|
A |
V22 Voltor |
Point-blank it destroys. Let them run and it misses. Know your range. |
|
A |
M77 Assault Rifle |
Scope is ugly. Gun is fine. Unique variant bumps it higher. |
|
A |
Outland (Sniper) |
Suppressed + reduced bloom in Dire Marsh. Actually menacing. |
|
A |
Impact HAR |
Builds heat on hit. Solid gun that gold makes marginally better. |
|
A |
KKV-9SD (New S2 SMG) |
1200 RPM, suppressed, heals on shield crack. Predicted S tier potential. |
|
B |
Copperhead RF |
Inconsistent damage. Doesn't hit hard enough to justify the slot. |
|
B |
BR33 Volley |
Slightly above Copperhead. Slightly. That's the ceiling. |
|
B |
Retaliator LMG |
Solid B, maybe higher. Honest gun, boring gold. |
|
B |
Ares Railgun |
Post-nerf AoE is too small to justify. Still functional, barely. |
|
B |
Longshot |
Fire rate nerf killed it. Stacks reset on weapon swap. Why even. |
|
B |
B19 Shadow Rifle |
Charge-up to shoot, charge-up to finish. Annoying loop, low reward. |
|
C |
Magnum MC |
Sniper scope, range capped at 30. The definition of wasted potential. |
|
C |
V11 Volt Punch |
Auto-track on charge. But 5-second lock after firing makes it unplayable. |
|
C |
Strider M1T |
Enemy-detection recon on ADS. Niche, usable, forgettable. |
|
C |
V175 SCAR |
Ricochet rounds off walls. Fun gimmick. Low DPS kills the fantasy. |
|
C |
Conquest LMG |
Bottom of C without the Volt unique. With it, jumps to A. Inconsistent. |
|
TRASH |
C Tactical |
Unusable. Genuinely, actually, completely unusable. Next season might help. Probably won't. |
|
TRASH |
Hardline PR |
Do not discuss this gun with me. |
|
TRASH |
Overrun AR |
Gold converts it from full-auto to burst. That is a nerf. Someone got paid to do this. |
|
TRASH |
Repeater |
Needs its own tier below the tier list. Do not ask. |
The Misriah 2442 gold attachment got a full rework for Season 2. Hip-fire goes full-auto; ADS switches to slugs. Fire rate took a slight reduction. None of it matters. This is still the only shotgun that survives the Stack Overflow nerf with its dignity intact, and every other shotgun has been left to rot. If you drop a gold Misriah, you do not swap it for anything on this list short of the Circuit Breaker. That is the policy.
The Circuit Breaker runs on Volt Battery and was built for exactly one job: ending the fight before it starts. Land a headshot and the match is over. Double body shot leaves the target on single-digit health. No other gun in Season 2 competes with a gold Misriah at close range: except this. The only real limitation is that you play defense with it, not offense. Push with it and you will lose. V85 Circuit Breaker build players who understand range discipline will carry lobbies. Everyone else will complain about TTK.
The Zeus charges fast, hip-fires with near-perfect accuracy, and one-shot headshot Marathon potential makes it a genuine threat. Double body shot leaves opponents at one HP: pair with any follow-up and the kill is free. Players who dismiss the Zeus have not properly aimed with it. The gun rewards patience in a way most weapons in this game do not. Keep it.
Right now: S tier. Stack Overflow interactions make the gold slug variant genuinely oppressive when you fire fast: boom boom boom, reload, repeat. After the Stack Overflow nerf Season 2 lands, it slides to top B at best. Compensation buffs could save it. Do not count on compensation buffs.
Gold gives you a deployable shield and full-auto suppression simultaneously. The Demolition HMG gold mod wins most 1v1s purely through attrition: you have cover, they do not. The aiming feels slightly drunk, which is the only reason this isn't SS+. Worth every inventory slot if you're already purchased Marathon ranked boost.
The best gold mods Marathon game outside the top two tiers share a common trait: they work, they just don't dominate. The Outland suppressed sniper is a particular standout in Dire Marsh: less bloom, no audio signature, misery for anyone caught in open terrain. The Twin Tap HBR is the most consistent A-tier pick, assuming you can actually hit four bullets in a row, which is an assumption this guide refuses to make on your behalf.
The KKV-9SD added in Season 2 reportedly heals the user on shield crack. If accurate, that mechanic alone pushes it into A-S range. A suppressed 1200 RPM SMG that refills your health on aggression is exactly the kind of thing that gets patched three weeks after launch.
The V22 Voltor rewards positioning. Point-blank it's devastating. Let a target jog away from you and the projectiles will curve somewhere scenic and miss entirely. The gun has a range requirement, not a skill requirement. Those are different problems with different solutions.
The Copperhead RF gold attachment sits in B tier because it doesn't do enough damage to warrant attention but doesn't embarrass itself either. The Retaliator LMG is the same: honest, boring, functional. Neither would appear in a serious loadout unless the better options were stolen from you, which happens constantly in Marathon because you die and lose everything. That's the game.
C tier is where gold attachments go to question their existence. The Magnum MC has a sniper scope as its legendary modifier and a maximum range cap of 30 meters. The design document for this gun should be framed and displayed in a museum of poor decisions. The V11 Volt Punch auto-tracks targets on charge: interesting: then locks your animation for five full seconds after firing: not interesting. The V175 SCAR ricochets bullets off walls, which is genuinely fun until you remember fun doesn't kill people.
The C Tactical is not a gun. It is a thought experiment about what happens when every design parameter is set to minimum and the result is shipped anyway. Season 2 buffs may improve it. The math required to make it "remotely decent" is not currently solvable by anyone on the balance team.
The Overrun AR gold mod explained: it converts full-auto fire to burst. In what universe is this an upgrade. The Hardline PR does not merit further discussion. The Repeater exists in a tier below the tier list, unreachable by conventional ranking frameworks, somewhere between "prototype" and "mistake."
Stack Overflow is being nerfed in Season 2. Every shotgun outside of Misriah loses a significant portion of its identity. The developers appear to know this and have chosen to proceed anyway. Adjust your loadouts.
The Marathon Season 2 new weapons include two close-range additions. The D54 Battle Pistol is a full-auto burst weapon: contradictory on paper, functional in testing. Its gold mod reportedly allows stack accumulation with a mode-switch that triggers a 9-round burst. High potential for either S tier dominance or B tier disappointment, with no middle ground likely.
The KKV-9SD SMG runs at 1200 RPM with an integrated suppressor and a healing modifier on shield crack. The KKV-9SD SMG gold mod is the kind of design that rewards aggression in an extraction game that usually punishes it. Whether it survives the first major patch unchanged is the only relevant question.
Gold mods drop from high-tier vaults, Cryo Archive runs, and locked rooms requiring prestige key cards. You will not find a gold Circuit Breaker in the first ten minutes. You will find a gold C Tactical in the first ten minutes, because the loot gods have a sense of humor. Extract it. Trade it. Forget it. get Marathon character boost
The Marathon extraction shooter meta after Season 2 looks heavily weighted toward Volt weapons and suppressed builds. Night Marsh rewards reduced audio signatures. The Outland and KKV-9SD fit that environment. Plan accordingly, or don't, and die in the dark making noise.

Misriah 2442 and V85 Circuit Breaker. Both SS+. Nothing else is close.
Drops from S to high B. Compensation buffs are possible but not confirmed. Do not rely on it.
Volt shotgun. One-tap headshot kills. Double body shot leaves one HP. Volt Battery ammo required.
Yes. Full-auto plus deployable shield wins most 1v1s. Difficult aim is the only real drawback.
Gold converts it from full-auto to burst fire. This is a nerf dressed as an upgrade. Avoid it.
