Marathon Complex Control Guide

Encryption certificates (Certs) are dropped by UESC enemies throughout Night Marsh. They serve two functions: unlocking exfils and hacking Network Towers for gear stockpiles. To access Complex Control's upper floors, you need enough Certs. There is no shortcut. Kill UESC, pick up Certs, repeat until the door opens.

The cert system mirrors Outpost's clearance mechanic. If you played Outpost, you already know the rhythm: the game makes you earn access to the good rooms by farming the rooms you don't want to be in. Network Towers are the secondary use: hack them for weapons, healing, and consumables before you commit to Complex.

Commanders drop Certs more reliably than standard UESC. Prioritize them. Don't bother celebrating: there are more before you reach some Marathon services.

Complex Control: Floor Layout

The Complex POI on Dire Marsh always had accessible lower floors and locked upper floors. Season 2 opened those upper rooms. Complex Control contains a UESC observation deck, science labs studying the Anomaly, and the heavily guarded loot rooms. Getting to the second floor requires Cert threshold. What happens once you're inside involves a phased button activation sequence that most teams fail to document before attempting.

Phase 1: Green Button Clearance

Phase 1 Green buttons are distributed across the lower and upper floors of Complex. You need a specific count activated to advance. Robots in the area respawn and protect button proximity. Check downstairs first: missing a lower-floor button wastes significant time when you're already deep into the phase.

Phase 2: Blue Button Sequence

Phase 2 Blue buttons must be hit across the floor: count varies, confirmed minimum of three needed before phase advancement. Coordinate with your squad; multiple players can hit separate buttons simultaneously. This phase coincides with increased enemy aggression. Other runner squads will also be present.

Phase 3: Boss Encounter

Phase 3 The boss spawns in a consistent location based on prior runs. It drops standard loot on kill: not exceptional. The primary value of the boss phase is completion, not the drop. After the boss dies you can access the main loot room. Kill the boss, don't celebrate the loot.

Secret Red Loot Room

This is the room that makes Complex Control worth the cert grind. Red buttons are hidden inside vents throughout Complex: not on walls, not on floors, inside vent shafts. They are easy to walk past. Multiple red buttons are required to unlock the red room. Shooting them is the activation method, not interacting.

Red buttons also appear above PCs in the lab sections. Scan the room above eye level. They sit in corners and alcoves where no one looks on first pass.

  • Check all vent openings: buttons are mounted inside at ceiling height
  • Look above PC terminals in lab rooms: a consistent spawn location
  • The red room door gives an audio confirmation on unlock: listen for it
  • The room contains strong boxes and high-tier loot containers
  • Access denied rooms within the red room area exist: schematic farming potential remains unconfirmed

The red room loot is not guaranteed to be gold-tier. RNG governs all strong box contents. You will sometimes open five boxes and find blue and orange gear. This is the game. Leave emotion out of Marathon ranked progression.

Enemy Threats Inside Complex

Standard UESC patrols occupy the lower floors. Upper floors have heavier variants. Exploding robots are the most consistent threat during button phases: they rush proximity and detonate. Do not let them reach you while looting.

Recon scan pings are a persistent threat in the loot rooms. If you hear one, other runners are actively tracking your position. The loot room is not cover: it is a box with one exit. Let flankers come through the door first, then deal with them. Fighting over Marathon boss loot at the exit is how runs end prematurely.

  1. Enter Night Marsh with minimum 25k loadout value: underprepared loadouts lose the cert contest
  2. Clear UESC on rotation to Complex: prioritize Commanders for cert drops
  3. Hack at least one Network Tower before attempting Complex entry: heal and restock
  4. Sweep downstairs green buttons first: then move upstairs systematically
  5. Designate one player to call out red button locations: in vents and above PCs
  6. Hold high ground during boss phase: second floor always beats ground level
  7. Exit via guarded exfil only if Cert-sufficient: confirm before committing

EMP grenades accelerate the boss fight. Bring at least two per player. Every second the boss is alive is another second a second squad rotates onto your Marathon character progression.

Loot Priority: What to Take

Complex Control produces schematics, salvage materials, and gear. Unstable salvage: Biomass, Gunmetal, Diodes, Lead, Gel: is the highest-priority pickup regardless of what else is in your pack. Drop blue gear to carry Unstable. Do not rationalize keeping the blue item. It is worthless relative to faction progression materials.

You need clearance to open the strong boxes in the loot room. If your squad drops clearance before opening all containers, you are done. Confirm clearance count before entering the red room. This is not a mistake you make twice.

Exfil: Getting Out Alive

Night Marsh exfil requires Certs to activate most beacon points. Guarded exfils are accessible without Certs but are: as the name implies: guarded. If you spent all clearance on strong boxes and have minimal Certs remaining, the guarded exfil is your only option. Other squads know this. They will be waiting.

Stamina determines exfil survival more than gear does at this stage. If you loaded in without stamina upgrades, you are losing a footrace to a player who did. Allocate runner points accordingly before queuing Night Marsh with a full inventory from Marathon map raids.

Marathon Complex Control Guide FAQ

How do I access Complex Control in Night Marsh?

Farm UESC Encryption Certificates until the upper floor door unlocks. No alternative route exists.

Where are the red buttons in Complex?

Inside vent shafts and above PC terminals in lab rooms. Shoot them: don't interact. Easy to miss.

Does the Complex Control boss always drop good loot?

No. The boss drops are unreliable. The red secret room strong boxes are the real target.

Can I run Night Marsh without completing all button phases?

Yes, but you won't access the boss room or the red loot room. Partial runs waste cert investment.

What's the best loadout for a Night Marsh Complex run?

Darksight scope, EMP grenades, Triage heal, and Shareware.exe. Stamina upgrades are mandatory, not optional.
