Marathon Season 2 Nightfall: Release Date & Overview

Marathon Season 2: Nightfall launches on June 2, 2026, around 7–10 AM CT / 1 PM EST. First ever seasonal wipe in the game's history. Everything resets. Your hoarded gear, your hard-earned faction ranks — gone. You're welcome.

Bungie is running an Open Play Week from June 2–9. The full game is free on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Progress carries over.

What the Wipe Takes. What It Doesn't.

Night Marsh: The New Map

Night Marsh is a nighttime version of Dire Marsh. Same location, zero comfort. The UESC has stepped up its presence, the anomaly is intensifying, and digital psychosis hallucinations are actively messing with what you hear. You start with a flashlight equipped by default because Bungie apparently decided visibility was a right, not a privilege.

The core tension: stay in the light and become a target for every Runner hiding in the dark. Go dark, use LAR (Low-Ambient Recon) cybernetic vision, and maybe you don't die immediately. The upper complex: previously gated off: is now accessible. It contains a UESC observation deck, science labs studying the anomaly, and a treasure room that is, predictably, the most guarded area on the map.

Access to Night Marsh requires Dire Marsh to be unlocked from Season 1. Otherwise both unlock at Runner Level 3.

Sentinel: The New Runner Shell

The Sentinel shell is a defensive Runner built for area control. The counter to every gap-closer who's been sprinting into your face since launch.

Ability

What It Does

Worth It?

Defender System

Prime ability. Deploys a laser platform. Destroys incoming grenades and missiles. Boosts nearby crewmate weapon handling.

Yes. Grenade spammers cry.

Snare Mine

Tactical ability. Thrown proximity mine. Detonates into immobilizing submunitions.

Yes. Stops rushers cold.

Prey Tracker

Passive. Activates a wrist-mounted radar HUD showing moving targets nearby.

Information advantage. Always useful.

Blast Resistance

Passive. Taking explosive damage buffs your resistances.

Situational, but pairs with the grenade meta.

Small Arms Buff

Passive. When surrounded, increased reload and ready speed on small arms.

Activates exactly when you need it most.

New Weapons

Two additions to the sandbox. Neither requires a PhD to use.

KKV-9SD SMG

Integrated suppressor. Short range. Excellent at deleting anything within arm's reach. The KKV SMG is built for shotgun rushers who think closing the gap solves all their problems. It does not.

D54 Battle Pistol

The D54 battle pistol comes with an integrated red dot. Designed as a 1v1 strafe-dueling sidearm. When things go sideways mid-fight and pulling out your sniper is social suicide, this is the answer. A reliable secondary that doesn't make you feel like a liability.

The Cradle: New Progression System

Season 1 tied every stat to faction upgrades. Wanted melee damage? Rank up Arachne. Wanted to be fast? Also rank up Arachne. It was a system designed by someone who apparently hated making choices feel meaningful.

The Cradle system replaces that. One screen. All runner shell stats. You distribute points however you want. Cradle XP comes from scrapping gear you don't need: batch-select junk, convert it, spend points. Reset anytime, no penalty. Want to go full agility from day one? Go ahead. Want to pivot mid-season? Also fine.

This is the single largest quality-of-life improvement in Season 2. Low bar. They cleared it.

Mods, Implants & the Seasonal Loot Reset

Every mod, mag, optic, and chip is being reviewed. Implants are getting inverted: perk first, stats second. The name tells you what it does. What a concept. Rarity and drop rates are also changing. Your reliable workhorse weapon from Season 1 might become considerably rarer. You'll have to find a new old reliable. The Marathon seasonal loot reset is not subtle about forcing you to adapt.

  • Implants now lead with perk identity, not stats
  • Some weapons will drop less frequently: intentionally
  • All mods reviewed for balance; unpopular ones likely adjusted
  • The seasonal reef set changes the value of everything you chased in S1

Progression & Contracts: Finally Addressed

The "in a single run" contract structure was the extraction shooter equivalent of homework. Bungie is restructuring those: still no confirmed specifics, but the stated goal is removing the wall-slamming feeling without removing the challenge. Material costs and faction reputation earning (solo vs. crew) are also being rebalanced.

The stated goal: most players should actually be able to reach VIP faction rank in a season. Previously, this was a statement of optimism rather than a design reality. Season 2 is attempting to fix the math.

The Narrative: Escalation

The UESC is done tolerating runners looting their property. They're fighting back. As their response escalates, the anomaly escalates in parallel. The seasonal narrative theme is called "escalation" because Bungie named it what it is. The Marathon Season 2 story puts you in the middle of a three-way tension between runners, the UESC, and something in the dark that doesn't care about either faction.
