Marathon Cryo Archive Guide
Season 1 is ending. Bungie's 1.0.9 patch guarantees map events, floods maps with wardens, drops free Cryo kits daily, and nukes the Ares Railgun. Spen
Bungie dropped Marathon update 1.0.9 on May 19. Season 1 ends June 2. Between now and then, the game is deliberately falling apart in the most rewarding way possible. Maps are louder, wardens are everywhere, and every run has a reason to exist. Whether you find that exciting or exhausting depends entirely on your relationship with loot-driven extraction shooters.
The centerpiece is the Warden Hunt event — active until the seasonal reset. Wardens now spawn at new points of interest across Perimeter, Dire Marsh, and Outpost, and every single one of them drops a locked room key. Guaranteed. No RNG. No excuses.
Every run now guarantees at least one zone event. Lockdowns, Intercept, Convoy, Anomaly — take your pick. The map is never quiet again.
New warden spawns, new POIs, and guaranteed key drops. That is the deal. If you have been playing this season and somehow never found a key, you were either extraordinarily unlucky or not playing. Now there are no more excuses.
With multiple wardens potentially active simultaneously alongside lockdowns and anomalies, attention is split across the entire map. That is either a strategic opportunity or a chaos tax. Plan accordingly.
Beyond wardens, expect UESC dropship flyovers and crash sites on Perimeter. Aerial activity has increased dramatically — seize the supplies if you can. Dire Marsh also gets a new UESC-deployed threat designed to shut down runner activity. Missiles have been sighted. Good luck with your health insurance.
The old Fragile key system — where extracting while downed meant losing the key permanently — is gone. Keys are now Compromised instead of Fragile. A compromised key just needs a Matter Fixative to restore it. Kill commanders and purple shield bots. They drop fixatives. Problem solved.
Fragile keys punished every reasonable playstyle and rewarded tedium. Compromised keys just require one extra step. This is an improvement. Accept it and move on.
This change makes the entire key economy vastly less punishing and removes the perverse incentive to play extremely passively to protect a single template.
The Marathon Cryo Archive endgame map will be available every day starting May 21 through the end of the season. Bungie will also send a free Cryo Archive Sponsored Kit to every player's mailbox daily during this period — a small mercy for those who have been avoiding the place because they can't afford to lose their loadout.

Ranked Cryo requires Run Level 25. Regular Cryo is unavailable while Ranked Cryo is active. If you are still chasing vault clears or the compiler before wipe, the two weeks of daily access are the window. Use them.
Runner Level and Faction XP gains from all sources are up by 50 percent for the remainder of the season. Warden kills specifically jumped from 15 XP to 50 XP. If the end-of-season loot event wasn't reason enough to log in, the accelerated faction grind certainly is.
Players who've been falling behind on faction goals have roughly two weeks to make up the difference. Don't squander it grinding safe PvE loops when guaranteed events are handing you targets.
Rook has been on the receiving end of indirect nerfs all season — Recon's expanded utility, warden frequency on Outpost, and general map pressure all made stealth-based play harder. Update 1.0.9 gives Rook some breathing room that lasts until Season 2:

The Ares Railgun's gold mod "Impact Shockwave" was obliterating players with blue shields or better in one hit. That's over. Explosive damage against players has been reduced by 75 percent. The mod also no longer lets you fire through UESC barriers or bubble shields. The railgun still exists. It is just no longer performing community service for the loot economy by involuntarily redistributing gear.
