Marathon Season 2 Nightfall dropped June 2. The Cradle changes how you build your Runner entirely. This guide cuts through the noise: stat priorities,
The old system made you grind faction contracts until your eyes glazed over, unlocking the same mediocre stat boosts everyone else was farming. Marathon Season 2: Nightfall replaces that with the Cradle: a dedicated progression screen where you allocate Energy across six stat categories to shape your Runner Shell from the ground up.
You earn Energy by converting loot into Cradle XP through the Matter Converter. Gold gun you'll never use? Feed it. Purple core collecting dust? Gone. The better the item, the more XP it yields. Every piece of junk becomes permanent character progress, which is a better use than watching it disappear on a failed extraction.
The Marathon Cradle progression system is shared across all Runner Shells and resets at the start of each new season. Respec your points freely: no cost, no penalty, no questions asked.
Fully maxing every category requires hitting level 84. You won't get there in week one. The Cradle is about priority, not completionism: choose what helps you survive now and respec once your playstyle stabilizes a Marathon map raid boost.
Each stat category governs a distinct part of your Runner's behavior. Spreading points evenly is the path to being mediocre at everything.

Several upgrades you previously hunted through faction trees: Primed (start each run with partial Prime ability charged), Finisher Protection, faster self-repair: are now inside the Cradle. You no longer need to commit to one faction's upgrade path to access them. Pick what you want, in the order you want it.
Marathon Season 2 progression lives and dies on movement. Contracts require map coverage. Every extra second spent waiting for your heat gauge to recover is a second your opponents are already extracting with your loot.
Dump your first points into Endurance. Heat capacity is Marathon's stamina system: more of it means more sprinting, more repositioning, and more contracts completed per run. Nothing else matters if you're standing still.

The Matter Converter turns unwanted gear into progress. Season 2 added batch selection, meaning you can convert an entire stack of purple items in one action instead of clicking through each one individually. Use it.
Every successful Marathon extraction now has a second layer of value: the items you bring back feed your permanent stat growth. A run where you die holding nothing was worthless. A run where you extract six purple items and convert four of them is a run that Marathon items.
With Runner Shell stat upgrades moved to the Cradle, faction levels now unlock armory options: better gear to barter, more weapons available for purchase, and faction-specific consumables. The grind changed shape; the stakes didn't.

In Season 2, faction priority contracts no longer gate-lock behind reputation levels. Finish one contract, the next one unlocks. No more hitting faction level 10 just to see the next set. That alone cuts the early-game drag by a third.
This is the one move that separates week-one players from everyone else re-running sponsor kits for the fourth time. The gap between a blue shield and a purple shield is not cosmetic: it is a substantial health advantage in every firefight.
Lock the NuCaloric purple shield barter as your second-faction milestone. Save all Materialist Plus gear in your vault. Do not equip it. Once the barter is unlocked, burn through purple materials with Materialist Plus active. Cryo Archive opens June 11: arrive with purple shields or arrive late.
NuCaloric's armory also provides free daily Patch Kits and Shield Charges after certain capstone unlocks: consumables that new runners burn through immediately and veterans stockpile. Getting this faction to capstone before Cryo Archive drops means you're extracting with better survivability and spending less per run on recovery items.
The Marathon competitive meta on day one of Cryo Archive will punish runners showing up with blue shields. Players who read this sentence and ignored it will figure that out the hard way to earn a progression with Marathon factions.
The new defensive Runner Shell built around squad anchor roles. Gives squads a clear defensive identity if they want to lean into it. Full breakdown pending once the shell is playable at scale.
Dire Marsh at night: limited vision, flashlights that broadcast your position, and new enemy types that are explicitly not UESC. The format shifts toward survival horror. Map layout is largely the same; darkness plus new spawns makes it play differently enough to matter.
Experimental PvE playlist. One squad, Night Marsh, no mid-run exfils. The timer is 18 minutes. There is only a final exfil. The pressure is the point.
Marathon is free for everyone June 2–9. All accounts wiped at season start: vault, credits, inventory, faction levels, Runner levels, all of it. Season 1 progress does not carry forward. Faction unlock status and initial priority contract completions do persist.
The wipe is the single best argument for bringing in new players this week. Everyone starts from zero. The only advantage returning players have is map knowledge and build intuition: both of which this guide partially compensates for.
Cryo Archive: the endgame zone with the Compiler boss: returns June 11. That's nine days to build faction rep, gear up, and have purple shields ready. Adjust your schedule accordingly.

Yes. All Cradle energy and stat allocations are shared across every Runner Shell you play. Respec freely.
Yes. Cradle resets with every season wipe, same as vault, credits, and faction levels. Plan each season from scratch.
Endurance. Heat capacity directly increases how much you can sprint and reposition during contracts and combat.
Yes. Redistribution is free, unlimited, and immediate. No currency required, no cooldown, no consequence.
Purple shields provide a larger survival advantage than weapon upgrades at early faction levels. Survivability before firepower.
