Marathon Ranked Mode Guide

You've spent hours grinding loot, leveling factions, and barely learning how not to die to a UESC drone: and now Bungie graciously invites you to do all of that again, except now every mistake costs you both your gear and your rank. This is Marathon Ranked Mode, arriving March 20 as part of Season 1: Death Is the First Step. The name is not ironic. It is aspirational.

Unlike every other piece of progression in Marathon that gets wiped at season reset, Ranked Mode exists to give you something permanent: the cosmetic proof that you were once competent enough to reach a certain tier, before the universe conspired to drag you back down. At least the badge stays, even after the ego doesn't.

"Ranked mode in Marathon is not about wins or kills: it is about how much loot value you can drag out of a warzone while other Runners actively try to murder you and steal your stuff." Welcome to the only genre where losing a game means losing your inventory.

Unlike casual play, Ranked Mode offers permanent cosmetic rewards via the Codex. Everything else in Marathon resets each season: your gear, your faction rep, your Runner level, your dignity. The ranked cosmetics, however, are yours to keep. This is Bungie's way of saying: prove it once and we'll believe you forever, or at least until we invent a new rank tier you haven't reached.

Requirements

Before you're even allowed to queue into Ranked, Marathon makes sure you have skin in the game: literally. Here's the checklist of prerequisites Bungie requires you to meet before it permits you to suffer:

  1. Reach Account Level 25: You must have met all six factions. If you haven't introduced yourself to every corporation and anarchist collective on Tau Ceti IV yet, go do that first. Ranked will wait. Your self-esteem won't, but Ranked will.
  2. Select a Zone: Ranked zones rotate weekly. You don't get to pick your favorite map permanently. The game picks for you. Adaptation is mandatory; complaints are free but useless.
  3. Meet the Gear Ante: Low Stakes requires gear totaling at least 3,000 credits in value. High Stakes demands 10,000. Show up under-geared and the game simply won't let you in. It's almost polite, honestly.
  4. Purchase a Holotag: No Holotag, no Ranked entry. No exceptions. The Holotag isn't cosmetic decoration: it is the core mechanic around which your entire run revolves. Buy it, equip it, and then watch it disappear along with your hopes if you die.

Low Stakes vs. High Stakes Zones

Every player can access Low Stakes zones from the start of Ranked. High Stakes zones unlock at Platinum rank and above, featuring denser loot tables, considerably angrier opponents, and the existential comfort of knowing everyone in there worked hard enough to be there. Both zone types rotate weekly, so prepare to relearn map layouts just when you felt confident. That confidence was getting dangerous anyway.

Rank Tiers

Marathon's Ranked ladder runs from Bronze to Pinnacle, with a possible seventh tier: Master: rumored to exist above Pinnacle for the top percentile of players on the entire server. Think of it as Bungie whispering "there's always someone better" in the dark.

Each rank contains three subdivisions: I, II, and III: which you must grind through before advancing to the next tier. Getting to Silver means surviving Bronze III, Bronze II, and Bronze I in sequence. Getting to Pinnacle means surviving everything. Multiple times over. Getting to Master: if it exists: means being one of the best runners alive on Tau Ceti, which is a remarkable achievement for someone who presumably has other options for spending their time.

Holotags

The Item That Controls Your Entire Existence

A Holotag is a purchasable item from the Armory that you carry into a Ranked match. It performs two jobs: it sets your crew's score target for the run, and it determines exactly how badly you get punished if you fail to extract. Think of it as a contract you sign in your own blood before every match.

Higher-rarity Holotags give you a larger head start of credits toward your score target the moment you drop in: but they also raise that target significantly, increase your loss penalty on death, and signal to every other Runner on the map that you're carrying something worth stealing.

When you kill another Runner and loot their Holotag, it does two things: it adds those credits toward your own score, and it raises your score ceiling: known as your overperformance capacity: beyond your original target. In other words, murdering someone well rewards you financially and competitively. Marathon is nothing if not consistent about its values.

Tag Chips: The PvE Consolation Prize

If hunting players feels too direct, Tag Chips can also be collected from high-ranking UESC enemies and dynamic map events like Lockdowns. These count toward your score target just like looted Holotags, so engaging with the PvE layer isn't just for faction rep: it's a legitimate path to climbing Ranked without making enemies. Fewer enemies, at least. The UESC still hates you.

Important: Ammo, consumables, and any gear you brought into the zone do not count toward your score. You cannot game the system by hauling in a backpack full of pre-loaded goodies. The game knows what you're thinking, and it judged you for it.

Scoring & Progression

Every Ranked run ends in one of three ways. Two of them are disappointing. One of them briefly makes you feel like a professional before the next run corrects that impression.

  • Extract at or above target score → Rank Points gained. You looted enough, survived long enough, and successfully ran away. The game rewards this behavior. Exceeding your target by a wide margin results in considerably larger rank gains, because overachievement should occasionally be rewarded before the next run destroys you.
  • Extract below target score → Zero progress, zero loss. You played it safe, got out alive, but didn't hit the number. No gain, no penalty. The game offers you a neutral outcome with the quiet contempt of a teacher handing back a blank exam. "At least you showed up," it says. It does not sound impressed.
  • Fail to extract → Rank Points lost, gear gone. Die in a ranked zone and you lose rank points equal to your crew's combined loss penalty. You also lose every piece of gear you brought in. This is the ranked system's most honest moment: it takes your competitive standing and your inventory simultaneously, with the emotional efficiency of someone who has done this many times before.

There is no MMR, no Elo, no win/loss ratio. This is not a game about being skilled: it is a game about being skilled, lucky, and adequately geared, repeatedly, over an extended season, while other skilled, lucky, geared players try to eliminate you and take what you've earned. This is Bungie's vision of competitive balance, and it is something to behold.

Rewards

In a game that wipes all your gear every season, Ranked rewards are among the few things that permanently survive. Progress through the tiers and the Codex unlocks two categories of rewards worth suffering for:

  • First-time rank milestone packages: Reaching a new rank for the very first time earns you a reward package from the Codex. Fall back down afterward? The reward stays. The game remembers your brief moment of competence even when you don't.
  • Exclusive cosmetics at select tiers: Certain ranks unlock cosmetic items that are not available anywhere else in the game. These are the permanent marks of distinction that carry over between seasons, so future opponents will know you once climbed to Diamond before the ranked season humbled you.
  • Instant vs. seasonal delivery: Some rewards are granted the moment you hit a milestone. Others are held until the start of the next season. For delayed rewards, the game uses your highest rank achieved during the previous season: so even if you drop back down before it ends, you'll still receive the rewards earned at your peak. Small mercy. Take it.

Cosmetics, achievements, titles, and Codex progression carry over between seasons. Your gear, faction progress, Runner level, and hope do not. Plan accordingly.

Strategy

The following tips are presented not because you'll follow them, but so you can think back on them after losing a Diamond Holotag to a team with better positioning and worse manners.

  1. Match your Holotag to your actual skill level, not your aspirational one. Buying a Pinnacle Holotag at Gold rank is a donation to whichever Platinum-tier squad finds your corpse. Start with the tier just below your current rank and work up as confidence grows. Overconfidence in extraction shooters has a face and it looks exactly like someone who just lost 20,000 credits of gear in thirty seconds.
  2. Engage with Lockdowns and UESC events. Tag Chips from events count toward your score. Doing PvE while enemies scramble for PvP targets is, statistically, less likely to get you killed. Use the UESC enemies as cover. They hate everyone equally.
  3. Clear your brought-in loot early. Items you carried into the zone don't score. Replace them mid-run with found high-value loot as soon as possible. Your inventory slot is not a museum for gear you're sentimentally attached to.
  4. Know your exit before you engage PvP. Hunting enemy Runners for their Holotags is lucrative. Getting into a firefight three minutes from the nearest exfil point with two teams closing in is a beautiful way to donate your Holotag to the ecosystem.
  5. In High Stakes, assume everyone is better than you. It keeps the paranoia at a healthy functional level and prevents the kind of optimistic pushes that end careers. Platinum and above is inhabited exclusively by people who survived long enough to earn those zones. Respect the lobby or it will instruct you accordingly.

Marathon Ranked Mode Guide FAQ

What is a Holotag and do I actually need one?

Yes, a Holotag is mandatory for Ranked entry — no Holotag means zero score contribution regardless of how much loot you drag out.

What happens to my rank progress if I die without extracting?

You lose Ranked Points equal to your crew's combined loss penalty, plus all the gear you brought in. It stings precisely as much as it sounds.

Can I play Ranked solo or do I need a full squad?

Currently Ranked is squad-only — some zones require a full crew, so either bring teammates or use matchmaking. Solo queueing is not currently supported.

Do Ranked cosmetic rewards disappear when the season resets?

No — Ranked cosmetics are permanent and carry over every season. Your gear wipes, your level resets, but the cosmetics stay as proof you briefly excelled.

What's the difference between Low Stakes and High Stakes Ranked zones?

Low Stakes requires 3,000 gear value and a Bronze Holotag minimum. High Stakes demands 10,000 gear value, a Platinum Holotag, and a much higher tolerance for disaster.
