Marathon Cryo Archive Guide

Bungie went ahead and locked the fourth map in Marathon behind a two-week community ARG, because apparently just putting it in the game at launch would have been too simple. The Marathon new map Cryo Archive is set aboard the UESC Marathon ship itself: yes, the actual ship: and it is exactly as cramped, deadly, and loot-dense as that sounds. Think Destiny 2 raid energy, but you also lose everything if you die. Fun!

Unlike the relatively forgiving planetary zones, Cryo Archive doesn't care about your feelings, your loadout, or the fact that it's 10 AM on a Saturday. It is a sprawling, labyrinthine first floor of a massive colony ship with tight corridors, ambush-friendly open rooms, vents that connect everywhere, and approximately four enemy types that all want you dead before you can open a single Vault. Welcome, runner. Try to enjoy it.

Cryo Archive is not a solo zone. No Rook. No solo queue. No exceptions. Bring two friends, or use matchmaking and hope the strangers you get aren't completely braindead. This is your only warning: and the game's only mercy.

The POIs across this monument to loot-induced anxiety are: CargoIndexSteerageControlPanopticonRevivalBiostockPreservation. You will get lost. You will end up back at Cargo. This is normal and expected.

The Cryo Archive weekend event Marathon Schedule

Here's a fun detail: the Cryo Archive weekend event Marathon is only available on weekends. Specifically, it runs from Friday at 10AM PDT / 1PM EDT / 5PM GMT to Monday at 10AM PDT. Much like Destiny 2's Trials of Osiris, Bungie has decided your Saturday belongs to them now. Your social life, your chores, your sleep schedule: all secondary.

The really charming part? Cryo Archive shares its time slot with Ranked Mode. So you get to choose between structured competitive stress and unstructured chaotic stress. Both will cost you gear. Both will cost you sleep. The choice is yours, and neither is wrong, and both are deeply wrong.

There is also a shared pool of seven contracts per weekend. Once your team completes a contract, it disappears from the pool for everyone. The idea is you sync questlines with your squad and run keys together: think of it as a weekend raid night, but one where the raid shoots back AND charges admission.

Completing contracts can award prestige gear and Marathon vault keys, so if you were hoping to skip the social coordination and solo-grind your way to godlike gear: again, no. The Cryo Archive is a team sport, a weekend commitment, and a genuine test of whether your squad can communicate under pressure. Most cannot. This is fine.

Marathon Cryo Archive level requirement: The Velvet Rope

Cryo Archive is an exclusive club, and Bungie is the bouncer. The Marathon Cryo Archive level requirement has three components, all of which you must meet simultaneously, because one gate wasn't patronizing enough:

  1. Be at least Level 25. The green number in the top right of your screen. If you're not there yet, go play the other maps and level up like a normal person. Cryo Archive will still be insufferable when you arrive.
  2. Complete all six Faction Liaison contracts. Yes, all six. Every single one. If you've been ignoring factions, congratulations: Cryo Archive is the consequence of your choices.
  3. Bring a loadout worth at least 5,000 credits. Cryo Archive enforces a minimum buy-in. You cannot waddle in with starter gear and free-roll the endgame. A basic shield, backpack, primary weapon, meds, and ammo gets you there fast. Implants and cores help pad it, but you'll hit 5k surprisingly quickly once you stop pretending budget gear is an option.

Don't panic about hitting exactly 5,000 credits. Toss on some ammo, an extra med stack, and a couple of implants you're not emotionally attached to. You'll cross the threshold without really trying.

How to get Cryo Archive sponsored kit (While It Lasts)

In a rare display of generosity, Bungie offers every player a one-time free Cryo Archive Sponsored Kit. Yes, free. One time. Gone after you use it. Understanding how to get Cryo Archive sponsored kit is embarrassingly straightforward: go to the Armory, claim it, and it'll cover your 5,000-credit entry requirement with a set of blue-tier gear, letting you take your first real look at the map without risking anything precious.

Use it wisely. Ideally, use it on your very first run so you can learn the layout, understand why everyone online said "oh no," and die in a new and interesting location without any lasting consequences. Consider it Bungie holding your hand exactly once before releasing you into a room full of UESC robots that absolutely do not care about your feelings.

Use the sponsored kit run to memorize exfil station locations and Scout terminal positions. Your future self: the one running 80k-credit loadouts: will be extremely grateful that past you did the homework for free.

Best loadout for Cryo Archive Marathon: Survive Before You Thrive

Let's talk about the best loadout for Cryo Archive Marathon, which is really just "as much healing and self-revives as you can physically carry." The map rewards aggression, punishes hesitation, and has enough ammo and meds lying around that you'll feel stupid for not bringing more consumables from the start.

Item

Quantity

Purpose & Essential Advice

Ammo

4+ Stacks

Primary bot-killing fuel. Don’t guess on this—bring four stacks or you'll be scavenging scraps from corpses all game.

Panacea / Big Heal

1+

Essential for rapid recovery. You will get wrecked early; this is a safety net, not a luxury.

Self-Revives

2+

cryo_archive_cringe

Plural is key. You'll likely burn through your starters before you find replacements on the map.

Antivirus Packs

1+

Mandatory for the Laboratory. The zone locks you in, and you don't want to miss the high-tier loot inside.

Grenades

As many as possible

Crucial for the map's verticality. Lobbing these around corners wins the fights gunfire can't.

Mechanic Kits / OSD Bugs

As needed

Not glamorous, but necessary for specific map sections. Don't leave home without them.

New exclusive implants from Cryo Archive drops are worth knowing about: Covert Recovery speeds your healing while in smoke: great for Assassins. Freeloader regenerates ability energy on knife kills, which sounds insane and probably is. Panic Response gives you a Cardio Kick effect when you use a heal at low health, which turns "about to die" into "briefly terrifying." These don't drop anywhere else, so your only way to get them is to actually survive the map long enough to loot them.

Where to find Security Clearance loot rooms Marathon

Once you know where to find Security Clearance loot rooms Marathon, you'll understand why everyone online is losing their minds over this map's economy. Starting at Security Level 3, locked rooms begin appearing that are absolutely stuffed with epic-quality loot. Level 4 rooms are better. Level 5 rooms are, frankly, offensive: prestige items, high-tier salvage, and materials you'd normally grind for hours on the planetary maps.

Here's the fun part: there are also loot room vents. Small ventilation shafts with a data pad next to them that requires a scan to open. These lead to tight, hidden rooms packed with additional loot. You'll miss half of them on your first few runs. The second time you find one you'd previously walked past, you will feel a very specific kind of grief.

For new players: get to Security Level 3, find a Level 3 loot room, clean it out, and extract. Don't chase Level 5 your first run. You'll get greedy, get killed, and donate your loot to someone who was smarter than you. Build up knowledge first. Gear second. Regrets never.

How to extract from Cryo Archive early (The Coward's Guide)

Knowing how to extract from Cryo Archive early is arguably more valuable than knowing where the loot is, because loot you die with is just a donation to whoever kills you. The good news is there's a valid early-exit loop: hit Security Level 3, open a Level 3 loot room, use a Scanner to locate an Exfil Station, and get out. Clean. Efficient. Alive. Repeat until you stop being terrible at this map.

Understanding how to exfil Cryo Archive Marathon requires accepting that this is nothing like the other maps. There are no standard extraction points visible from the start. The full extraction process works like this:

  1. Reach Security Clearance Level 3. This is non-negotiable. No clearance, no exfil. Goodbye, gear.
  2. Find a Scanner terminal on the wall and scan it to reveal Exfil Station locations briefly on your map.
  3. Find the Exfil Station terminal (marked with an orange icon and black arrow: look for it near and within the central Control area) and interact with it to summon the Secret Exfil.
  4. Run. The Secret Exfil spawns at a random edge of the map and you have approximately 3–3.5 minutes to reach it. Only one exfil can be active at a time, so if another team activates before you, you're waiting.

The Secret Exfil is visible to other players if they stumble upon it. Do not walk slowly. Do not get into a fight you don't need to win. Get to that beacon and extract like your loadout depends on it: because it does.

Marathon Secret Exfil locations: Good Luck

Marathon Secret Exfil locations are randomized per activation, always spawning at the outer edges of the map: which, conveniently, is often very far from wherever you just activated the terminal. The map's labyrinthine structure means figuring out the path to the exfil is its own puzzle. Lovely design choice. Very fun.

There is also a Final Exfil: a hidden extraction point that appears for exactly one minute when the run timer hits zero. It does not appear on your map. Nobody knows exactly where it spawns. It is essentially a last resort for people who completely failed to exfil through normal means. If you need it, you've already had a bad run. If you find it, you've had a miracle. Currently, no one has reliably located and documented it. Proceed accordingly.

Don't wait around after activating an Exfil Station. The 3–3.5 minute timer starts the moment you interact. The maze-like structure of the ship means your path to the edge could be long. Start moving before you've finished thinking about it.

How to open Cryo Archive Vaults (Bring a Checklist)

Multi-step process that will make you feel like you're assembling IKEA furniture in zero gravity. There are six Vaults, each requiring a Marathon Vault Key, Batteries for power, and Cryo Coolant. Here's the breakdown, which looks simple until you're actually doing it while being shot at:

  1. Get a Marathon Vault Key. These drop on other maps during the week, inside Cryo Archive from enemies, or through CyberAcme contracts. Each key shows its Power and Coolant requirements (e.g., Power: 8, Coolant: 1). Do not sell these. You will regret selling these.
  2. Find Batteries. These are physical items scattered around the map. At higher Security Clearance, your Scanner terminal will show their locations. You need approximately 8 per vault. Carry them. Do not drop them.
  3. Fill Cryo Coolant containers. Take empty containers to the lowest level of the map: Control: where frost effects are visible. Fill them there. Bring both batteries and filled coolant to the Vault door along with your key.
  4. Open the Vault and face what's inside. Each Vault contains a puzzle unique to it. High-tier containers, valuable materials, salvage, and gold weapons await behind each completed challenge.

How to get subroutines Marathon and Why You Want All Six

Understanding how to get subroutines Marathon is really understanding how to unlock Vault 7: the secret, hidden, wildly dangerous final chamber that contains the best loot in the game. Each of the six standard Vaults contains a Subroutine item that you extract with. Collect all six across multiple runs, enter Cryo Archive with all six in your loadout, and Vault 7 becomes accessible.

Totally straightforward. Just complete six separate Vault runs across multiple weekends, successfully exfil each time with a Subroutine intact, coordinate with your team, and then bring everything together for a final showdown with the Compiler boss inside Vault 7. Simple. Nothing to worry about. Very chill activity for a Saturday.

The Vault 7 rewards include Compiler Ganglion salvage and the Biotoxic Disinjector Contraband weapon. These are exclusive to the final boss encounter and cannot be found anywhere else. Whether the effort-to-reward ratio is reasonable is between you and your therapist.

Marathon new gold weapons: The Shiny Carrot

Cryo Archive drops Marathon new gold weapons in Vault weapon lockers, which is either a great reason to run the map or an elaborate punishment for enjoying the game. Gold weapons in Marathon function differently from standard variants: prestige mods fundamentally alter how the weapon operates, not just its numbers. Cryo Archive introduces gold variants that can only be found here, inside locked Vaults, behind multiple layers of security clearance, batteries, coolant, and at least one near-death experience.

New weapon chip mods exclusive to Cryo Archive include: Punishment: massively increased damage against Compiler enemies (hint: use this in Vault 7). Testament: extended ADS time dramatically increases range and aim assist, turning patience into power. Hurricane: airborne stability boost that actually rewards players who use vertical movement. These can be found anywhere in the map, which is perhaps the most generous thing Cryo Archive does for you. Enjoy the one nice thing.

How to defeat Compiler Vault 7 Marathon: The Main Event

If you've made it to Vault 7, you have successfully completed the longest lobby simulator in extraction shooter history and earned the right to fight the Compiler. The Marathon Compiler boss fight guide goes like this: the Compiler is a large cloaked figure who fires projectiles at you, shoots green lasers, and periodically opens its cloak to reveal a glowing green core on its chest. Shoot the green glowy thing. Revolutionary tactics.

But before you can even think about shooting the core, you need to do a bit of homework. The full how to defeat Compiler Vault 7 Marathon process begins before you even enter:

  1. Find a DNA Network machine in the Cryo Archive. Press the button on the right to begin printing a DNA sequence. UESC enemies will spawn: survive 45 seconds. Take the DNA Sequence item (four random letters) from the left side of the machine.
  2. Take the code to a second DNA Network machine and deposit it. Then activate 4 buttons around the room in the correct order matching your DNA letters (e.g., if your sequence is ACGT, press buttons in that order). This gives you the Command DNA Vial.
  3. Reach Security Clearance Level 4 and gather around 16 Batteries before attempting the Vault 7 encounter.
  4. Inside the fight: activate terminals around the arena with the correct symbols to open the Compiler for a damage phase. When its cloak opens, shoot the green core in the chest. Three slow green orbs will be fired: destroy them before they hit you, as each deals 50–90% of your health. Repeat until it's dead.

The green orbs from the Compiler are not decorative. Each one deals catastrophic damage. If all three hit a teammate simultaneously, that teammate is done. Prioritize destroying orbs over dealing damage to the boss. Every time. Without exception.

How to get Biotoxic Disinjector Marathon: Your Hard-Earned Trophy

So you want to know how to get Biotoxic Disinjector Marathon. Great. Collect all six Subroutines across multiple Cryo Archive weekend runs. Enter Vault 7. Solve the DNA puzzle. Maintain Security Level 4 with 16 batteries. Fight the Compiler. Destroy the orbs. Shoot the chest. Win. Then walk to the back of the room, step out to the edge of the UESC Marathon ship, and loot the body for a Compiler Ganglion and chest rewards: including the Biotoxic Disinjector Contraband weapon.

The Biotoxic Disinjector is unique, exclusive, and cannot be found anywhere else in the game. It is the Cryo Archive's final flex: a weapon that exists only for players who committed to the full grind, coordinated with their team across multiple weekends, and successfully navigated everything this absurd map threw at them. It is absolutely worth it. Probably. We assume. Good luck getting there.

After defeating the Compiler, you can immediately exfil from Vault 7. The extraction is triggered directly after the fight ends. Don't linger appreciating the view: you're still in a game that wants your gear and you've come too far to lose it now.
