This is not a regular key that showers out of every activity like Lair Keys do. It sits in its own category alongside the Betrayer's Husk: the two Exalted materials Diablo 4 Season 13 decided to gatekeep behind harder content, because apparently they thought your time was too abundant.

Mephisto is an Exalted Lair Boss exclusive to the Lord of Hatred expansion. No Crux, no chest. That's the entire mechanic. Now let's talk about where to actually get one.

Efficient Farming Strategy

The honest Crux of the False Prophet farming loop is: push to Torment X as fast as possible, then spam Greater Lair Bosses inside active War Plans. That's it. The Crux is a byproduct, not the primary target: which is the most irritating thing about it.

• War Plans are mandatory. Running any endgame activity outside an active War Plan is throwing bonus loot into the void. Set up a War Plan with Lair Bosses included and run them inside it. Every time.
• Greater Lair Keys come from Initiate bosses. Defeat all Initiate Lair Bosses: Varshan, Grigoire, Beast in the Ice, Lord Zir, Urivar, Bartuc, Astaroth: to generate Greater Lair Keys for Duriel, Andariel, Harbinger of Hatred, and Bloody Butcher. This is the key pipeline.
• Stack basic Lair Keys first. Basic keys drop from War Plans, Helltide, World Bosses, Legion Events, and Tree of Whispers caches. Season 13 raised the stack cap, so accumulate without paranoia.
• Bump Lair Boss difficulty by +1 before the fight if your build can handle it. Higher level = better loot across the board, Crux drops included.

The Mephisto loot hoard Diablo 4 reward pool is worth the friction. His chest at Torment X+ drops Mythic-adjacent gear and crafting materials that justify the entire key economy. A consistent supply of Cruxes requires consistent Greater Lair Boss clearing: there's no shortcut that isn't also selling you something.

Using the Crux: Mephisto's Loot Hoard

When you have a Crux, go to Hanged Man's Hall in eastern Kehjistan, near the Tarsarak waypoint. Defeat the Echo of the False Prophet (Mephisto). Spend your Crux on his loot hoard afterward. That's the full loop.

Mephisto is an Exalted Lair Boss. He does not accept Greater Lair Keys. He does not care about your regular key stockpile. He wants exactly one Crux of the False Prophet, consumed after the kill to unlock the chest. Show up without one and you've just done a free Mephisto kill for the experience and the principle of the thing.

For Echo of Mephisto Torment farming, treat each run as a significant investment. Unlike Greater Lair Bosses where keys flow freely once your pipeline is established, Cruxes are throttled. Don't run Mephisto at a Torment tier where you're barely surviving: the Diablo 4 Mythic item farming rewards scale with difficulty, and a sloppy low-Torment kill is a wasted key.

Exalted Tier Context: Why This Key Is Different

Season 13 introduced a three-tier Lair Boss key structure. Initiate bosses use basic Lair Keys. Greater bosses use Greater Lair Keys. Belial and Mephisto sit in the Exalted tier, using unique materials: Betrayer's Husk and Crux of the False Prophet respectively. Neither drops from Greater Lair Bosses. Both require specific conditions.

This is intentional Diablo 4 Season 13 endgame pacing. Exalted bosses are rewards caps, not daily farms. Blizzard doesn't want you running Mephisto ten times a session every session. Whether that design decision respects your time or insults it is a separate conversation.

The key stack cap increase in Season 13 is a genuine quality-of-life improvement for the standard key tiers. For Cruxes, it means nothing: you'll never hold enough to need a stack cap raised.
