The Monument of Triumph: Destiny 2's final live-service update (Update 9.7.0, launched June 9, 2026): added Vex Guardian armor ornament sets for all three classes. They are free in the sense that they require no Silver. They are not free in the sense that you need to complete Triumphs and spend Legendary Marks, a new in-game currency introduced specifically for this system.
The Vex set is one of 12 armor ornament sets per class available through Tenet vendors in the Tower Courtyard. Yes, twelve. Bungie had nine years of content to burn through and decided to dump it all at once. Respect the chaos.
Login Bonus Every Guardian who logs in at launch receives 50 Legendary Marks, 2 Bright Engrams, and the Toast to the Monument emblem automatically. Collect this before doing anything else. It costs you nothing and takes ten seconds.
The Destiny 2 free Vex armor ornaments acquisition loop is straightforward enough that even a Warlock can follow it without getting distracted by lore.
Monument of Triumph Legendary Marks cost Vex Guardian ornament set: 50 marks / class. Three classes = 150 marks. Starting bonus covers one class exactly. Do not blow it on a skimmer before checking prices.
Legendary Marks are earned through Monument of Triumph Triumphs: a category that covers nine years of Destiny 2 history. Raids, dungeons, Crucible, Gambit, destinations, public events, story missions. The Triumphs have no expiry, and neither do your Marks. Stack them at a pace your sanity can sustain.
The fastest sources are destination exploration objectives, Lost Sectors, and public events: low-effort, high-volume. Pantheon 2.0 (a permanent returning activity in Update 9.7.0) offers rotating bosses and extra Triumph opportunities for anyone who wants to earn marks while also suffering. Hourly Distortion events on destinations provide bonus Triumph progress.
Some entry-level Triumphs require nothing more demanding than petting Archie in the Tower or speaking to an NPC. This is intentional. Bungie built an on-ramp shallow enough that returning players from 2017 can participate without relearning the entire sandbox. Whether this is generous or condescending depends on your perspective and your Guardian Rank.

All three classes have a full Vex Guardian ornament set. The Warlock set features the Vex Milk robe silhouette: a design unique enough that it prompted the content creator who documented this to call it the best of the three. The Tower armor ornament vendors let you preview every piece before purchasing, which is the only sane way to spend 50 marks on cosmetics you cannot trial-run in the field.

These sets are universal ornament sets, meaning they apply over most standard armor. Exotic armor transmog: a separate update in 9.7.0: now allows Legendary ornaments (including these) to be applied over Exotic armor pieces in PvE. The yellow Exotic icon stays. PvP reverts to base Exotic appearance for competitive readability. Plan accordingly.
The Vex Guardian sets are built to interact with shaders that produce glowing color shifts: particularly anything with a second color channel that responds to emissive elements in the mesh. Below are the shader categories worth testing on these ornaments.
Best results. The Vex sets have emissive geometry that reacts to the secondary shader channel. Prioritize these.
Clean reads on the Vex plating. High contrast between the metallic body and glow channels.
Gated behind a Vault of Glass weekly Deepsight quest. If you do not have it, you cannot have it yet. Life is hard.
Available from Tenet vendors. Makes the glow elements pop by eliminating competing colors. Aggressive choice.
Both Chatterwhite and Superblack have special unlock requirements beyond Legendary Marks. Chatterwhite requires completing a weekly Deepsight quest from Hawthorne for the Vault of Glass raid. Check requirements before assuming your Marks are the only barrier: they rarely are.
In case the Vex set alone is not enough to justify logging in, here is the complete picture. The Destiny 2 Update 9.7.0 new armor content is the largest cosmetic drop in the game's history. Twelve sets per class across four Tenet vendors, plus the following items that cost marks or have specific unlock gates:
Vault space increased from 1,000 to 1,300 slots and loadout slots from 12 to 20. The game is, for once, slightly less hostile to the concept of storing things you paid for.
You have 50 free marks at login. Here is a rational order of operations so you do not regret your first five minutes.
Tower Courtyard, Tenet vendors. Spend 50 Legendary Marks per class after completing enough Monument of Triumph Triumphs.
Correct. No Silver. Earn Legendary Marks through in-game Triumphs. Time-gated, not paywalled. Finally.
Login bonus covers one class. Farming 100 more marks takes a few hours via destination exploration and story Triumphs.
Yes, in PvE only. Update 9.7.0 introduced Exotic transmog. PvP reverts to base Exotic appearance automatically.
No. Marks have no expiry date. Farm at whatever pace your schedule: or patience: permits.
