Destiny 2 Final Hotfix: Divinity Nerf & Armor Glitch

Bungie shipped Update 9.7.0.3 on July 7, and by every account it is the last hotfix Destiny 2 will ever receive. If you were hoping for a grand send-off, you got Vanguard reputation fixes and a dead exotic instead. Poetic, in a corporate sort of way.

The Divinity Nerf

Players found a way to hit Insurrection Prime with Destiny 2 Divinity nerf damage outside the intended phase in the Pantheon 2.0 encounter. Bungie's fix wasn't a fix: it was an exorcism. Divinity, and anything standing in its damage cage, now does zero damage to the boss at any point in the fight. Forever. Not "until we find a cleaner solution." Forever, because there is no more staff to write a cleaner solution.

Before

After

Divinity weakens the boss anywhere, anytime, cheese included

Divinity does nothing to Insurrection Prime, full stop

LFG groups tolerate any subclass

LFG groups kicked people over this for weeks, so nobody's crying

Fireteams lean on one exotic to trivialize the fight

Fireteams get to relearn mechanics like it's 2019 again

"There are numerous ways to weaken the boss to increase damage.": Bungie, gently telling you to go figure it out yourself.

Bungie insists you still have options: Tractor Cannon, Fafnir, grenade launchers, the Weakened Clear artifact mod. All true. None of it changes the fact that the studio spent one of its last hotfix slots killing a cheese strategy instead of, say, fixing the thing everyone actually complained about. Priorities.

Why Nothing Gets Patched Fast (Allegedly)

A player asked, reasonably, whether rally banners could be dropped to one glimmer as a farewell gift. DMG's answer amounted to: no, because the game might explode. He then pre-empted the inevitable comment section by addressing the destiny 2 spaghetti code accusation directly, admitting that a game built nearly ten years ago, patched hundreds of times, does not take kindly to "small" changes.

"Even the smallest change can have make or break unexpected ways... before someone hops in to yell spaghetti code, video games are complex to build and maintain.": DMG, saying the quiet part on the record.

Refreshing honesty, mostly because there's nothing left to lose. It is also, notably, the closest Bungie has come to publicly conceding that the engine underneath a decade of expansions is held together with duct tape and prayer: which explains why a one-glimmer price change was apparently riskier than nerfing an entire exotic.

The Loot Sector Armor Glitch (Use It Before It's Banned Too)

Somewhere between the doom and the eulogies, there's an actual destiny 2 armor glitch worth exploiting while it still exists. If your engrams are full when a Lost Sector drops armor, the postmaster hands you Ferocious, Smoke Jumper, or Tech armor instead of whatever the destination normally rolls. It's a bug. It's also free farming. Bungie has already signaled bugs like this may just get switched off rather than fixed, so treat this like a closing-down sale.

  • Fill your engrams before running Lost Sectors on any destination
  • Collect armor drops via the Tower postmaster, not on the spot
  • Expect Ferocious, Smoke Jumper, or Tech armor sets specifically
  • Do not report this to anyone who works at Bungie; there's barely anyone left to fix it anyway

Meanwhile, the Rest of the Industry Is Also on Fire

If it's any comfort, misery has company. The same week as Destiny's send-off, xbox layoffs 2026 hit the wire: roughly 3,200 jobs cut across Microsoft's gaming division, four studios spun off, and management layers flattened from fourteen down to five. Half the cuts landed immediately; the rest arrive over the next year, presumably one dread-filled email at a time.

What Happened

The Damage

Xbox division restructure

~3,200 roles cut through FY27, ~1,600 immediate

Studios spun off

Ninja Theory, Undead Labs, Compulsion Games, Double Fine

Financial excuse

Xbox reportedly lost 64 cents for every dollar invested in its studio portfolio

Bungie, separately

~400 employees cut in June, roughly half its remaining staff

And because misery loves a sequel, reports around elder scrolls online layoffs suggest ZeniMax Online Studios lost as much as half its development team in the same round. The community's reaction was immediate: if it happened to Destiny, it can happen to your current live-service comfort game too. Nobody is special. Everybody is a line item.

The Bottom Line

Update 9.7.0.3 is, as far as anyone can tell, the actual final word on Destiny 2 patching. Bungie used it to nerf a beloved exotic, quietly ban an armor exploit's future, fix some elevators, and give you a decade-late admission that the code is exactly as fragile as everyone joked it was. It is not a bad send-off. It is also not the send-off anyone asked for.

Destiny 2 Final Hotfix: Divinity Nerf & Armor Glitch FAQ

Is this really Destiny 2's last update ever?

As far as public statements go, yes: Update 9.7.0.3 is described as Destiny 2's final hotfix following Bungie's layoffs and the team's dissolution.

Can I still use Divinity in Pantheon?

Yes, everywhere except Insurrection Prime, where it now deals zero damage permanently, killing the exploit and the legitimate strategy alike.

Is the Lost Sector armor glitch still usable?

Yes, for now. Full engrams plus a Lost Sector drop nets Ferocious, Smoke Jumper, or Tech armor via the postmaster, unpatched.

Why didn't Bungie lower the rally banner cost?

DMG said even small economy changes risk breaking unrelated systems, and there wasn't enough testing time left before lockdown.

Are the Xbox layoffs connected to Destiny 2 winding down?

Not directly: Bungie is Sony-owned: but both reflect the same industry-wide cost-cutting hitting live-service games simultaneously in 2026.
