Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Release Date & Full Overview

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 release date is October 23, 2026. Announced May 28. You have five months to prepare your excuses for why you keep buying these annually. The game is a current-gen exclusive: PS4 and Xbox One are dead to Infinity Ward. Good riddance.

Platforms

MW4 platforms cover every modern box, including: finally: Nintendo Switch 2. First CoD on a Nintendo platform since Ghosts hit Wii U in 2013. It supports cross-play and Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, which is either inspired or absurd.

Campaign

The Modern Warfare 4 campaign drops you on the Korean Peninsula as Private Park, a South Korean soldier who did not ask for any of this. North Korea invades, everything collapses, and somewhere else Captain Price is running an off-books operation with Ghost that somehow makes it all worse. The plot spans Korea, New York, Paris, and Mumbai: trench warfare, high-speed chases, SAS night raids. The whole itinerary.

Makarov and Ghost are both back, with early footage suggesting Price and Ghost are directly at odds. Long-running storylines supposedly reach "a powerful and emotional breaking point." Whether that means good storytelling or a cutscene that lasts forty minutes is anyone's guess.

Multiplayer

MW4 multiplayer ships with 12 all-new 6v6 maps at launch. No recycled content from past titles. The maps are set across visually distinct global locations, with separate Gunfight maps and Big War maps for large-scale vehicle combat. Nobody asked for wall-running or cloaking devices, and Infinity Ward did not include them.

The studio calls it Ballistic Authority: a unified weapon technology stack. Bullet trajectory, weapon motion, audio, and FOV all tuned together. The headline feature: no more weapon bloom on hipfire. Bullets go where you aim. Revolutionary concept, evidently.

Kill Block A dynamic multiplayer map with 500+ layout configurations that change between rounds. The most interesting thing about MW4 multiplayer and also the thing most likely to be patched into oblivion by Season 2.

The loadout system has been redesigned into one unified screen. Attachments are now shared across weapon classes: unlock one on an AR, it applies to the whole class. Classic Prestige also returns, for those who enjoy the ritual of voluntary demotion.

DMZ Mode

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ returns as a full core mode, not an afterthought bolted to the side of multiplayer. It launches October 23 alongside the campaign and standard MP. The extraction map is called Hajin. Full reveal is set for June 7 at Summer Game Fest, which means you have approximately three days before every content creator on earth spoils it completely.

Pre-ordering any edition gets you MW4 pre-order bonus content: Open Beta Early Access and the Hunter Killer Operator skin, which is redeemable in Black Ops 7 and Warzone immediately. The loyalty discount requires you to have owned and played a CoD title from 2019 onward on the same account. If you have been buying these annually like clockwork, congratulations: you saved ten dollars.

Open Beta

An MW4 open beta is confirmed. Pre-ordering any edition grants Early Access. The exact dates have not been announced. Minimum duration is two days, which is the legal minimum for calling something a beta rather than a server stress test.

Warzone Integration

MW4 Warzone gets a full reset with Season 1. All weapons, operators, camos, and cosmetics from previous titles will not transfer. Everything you spent three years grinding in Warzone: gone. Activision thanks you for your service and your microtransactions.

Development

Infinity Ward leads development with support from High Moon, Sledgehammer, Treyarch, Raven, Beenox, and several others. This is the 23rd game in the franchise. Context: Call of Duty 2026 arrives roughly a month before GTA 6 on November 19, which means Activision is either confident or delusional. Possibly both.
