Black Ops 1 & 2 PS4/PS5 Port Updates: What Changed

The Black Ops PS4 PS5 port update that dropped this week is mandatory, roughly 1.5GB, and applies only to the original Black Ops. Input latency on 120Hz+ displays has finally been reduced, which is the single biggest quality fix these ports have received since launch. Black Ops 2 got nothing this round, so keep enjoying your delay if that's your title.

Black Ops 7 Season 5 Boosting

Treyarch confirmed the ports through Iron Galaxy, and both games hit PS4 and PS5 on July 9, 2026, running full Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies. Nobody promised a remaster, and nobody got one. What you got was a fourteen year old game with a shinier server rack behind it.

What the New Title Update Actually Fixes

Zombies matches on Black Ops 1 now prioritize PS5 hosts and stop demoting the lobby to a PS4 machine, mirroring a change multiplayer already received. A toggle was also added to hide other players' custom emblems, which exists because a subset of the player base cannot be trusted with a drawing tool. Everyone's emblem stays visible by default, so the toggle only helps you if you remember it exists.

Activision itself once insisted these releases were "not upgrades in any capacity, just a ported game." That claim aged poorly the moment a real feature, the emblem toggle, showed up in a patch note.

The Black Ops 2 patch notes from July 17 covered three things: PS5 host priority in public multiplayer, added protection against host migration exploits, and a controller deadzone adjustment meant to match the original PS3 feel. None of this touches the sniping bug. The classic BO1 sniping fix from the original release has still not made it to these ports, so aim down sights and pray like it's 2011 again.

The Cheating Situation Is Worse Than the Marketing Suggested

Within days of launch, Black Ops PS5 aimbot hackers turned Ground War and Domination lobbies into a demolition derby, with players blowing themselves up on purpose to farm experience. Activision disabled select playlists, issued a server-side fix, and reset every negative-XP victim back to level 20. Some accounts were reportedly locked out of multiplayer entirely after being hit with negative XP, which is a genuinely impressive way to punish someone for owning the game.

Wallhacks, instant Master Prestige, and full "Unlock All" account imports were also documented, and a viral clip of one player headshotting an entire lobby has racked up close to a million views. The Black Ops negative XP exploit was the ugliest of the bunch since it actively locked innocent players out rather than just annoying them.

Why Crossplay Is the Root of the Problem

The Black Ops crossplay cheaters problem traces back to jailbroken PS4 consoles, since PS5 hardware is far harder to modify. Crossplay lets PS4 players end up hosting even though PS5 is now the preferred host, and that gap is exactly where modders operate. One community voice, Reality UK, argued the only real mitigation is letting PS5 owners toggle crossplay off entirely.

Cutting crossplay would shrink the player pool and slow matchmaking, so Activision is stuck choosing between a smaller clean lobby and a bigger dirty one. So far they've picked "bigger and hope for the best."

What Still Needs Fixing

  • The original sniping bug from BO1's first release has never been carried over to the port.
  • Black Ops 2 has not received the 120Hz input latency fix that Black Ops 1 already got.
  • No PS5-only crossplay toggle exists yet despite repeated community requests.
  • Anti-cheat systems on both titles remain the same outdated infrastructure from the PS3 era.

The Black Ops zombies PS5 host priority change and the Black Ops custom emblems toggle prove Activision is still capable of shipping features when embarrassed publicly enough. Whether that motivation survives past the launch news cycle is the real question, since support for legacy ports historically evaporates fast once sales numbers stop trending.

These titles have sat in PlayStation's top 10 most played games since release, so the commercial incentive to keep patching exists. Whether Activision keeps pace with the Black Ops title update 2026 cadence needed to actually kill the cheating problem, rather than just resetting a few XP totals, remains to be seen.

Black Ops 1 & 2 PS4/PS5 Port Updates: What Changed FAQ

Did Black Ops 2 get the new title update too?

No, this update only applies to Black Ops 1. Black Ops 2 received a separate patch on July 17 instead.

Is the classic Black Ops 1 sniping bug fixed on the port?

No, the original sniping fix from years ago has still not been applied to these new PlayStation ports.

Why are cheaters so common on these ports?

Jailbroken PS4 consoles exploit crossplay with PS5, letting modded lobbies and exploits spread through host migration.

Can I hide other players' custom emblems?

Yes, a toggle now exists in Black Ops 1's multiplayer menu, though emblems remain visible by default for everyone.

Was negative XP hacking actually fixed?

Partially. Activision reset affected players to level 20, but admits more mitigations are still rolling out.
