Modern Warfare 4 Beta Dates: Full Schedule and Backlash

The Modern Warfare 4 beta dates are locked in and they are somehow worse than expected. Early Access runs August 21 to 25 for anyone who pre-ordered, and the Open Beta runs August 28 to September 1 for everyone else. The Modern Warfare 4 release date itself is October 23, so Activision has decided the best time to test a new shooter is the exact week another one of their own games is still trying to breathe.

Season 5 Reloaded brings the Rex Infernace map on July 23, and Infinity Ward apparently could not wait one more week to start cannibalizing their coworkers' zombies fans.

The Call of Duty Next 2026 showcase also lands on August 21, immediately before the beta unlocks, and this year it is being run entirely from creators' homes instead of a live event. Activision framed this as a cost saver. Everyone else is calling it what it is, a quiet admission that in person Call of Duty Next stopped helping the brand a while ago.

The open beta begins the day after Black Ops 7's biggest zombies content drop in years, meaning Activision is actively splitting its own audience between two of its own games in the same week.

The Modern Warfare 4 Nintendo Switch 2 rollout is the one genuine surprise here. Pre-orders open August 26, and Switch 2 owners skip Early Access entirely, jumping straight into the Open Beta on August 28 with no purchase required. Standard Switch Online applies for online play, same as everything else on the platform.

Then there is the Modern Warfare 4 pre-order bonus structure, which somehow makes pre-ordering feel like a part time job. You get the Moonlit Pearl camo instantly, sure. But the second camo, Glided Gun, requires completing a challenge in Black Ops 7 first, and only the first 100,000 players get their name individually stamped onto it. Both eventually unlock in Modern Warfare 4 at launch anyway, so the entire exercise exists purely to keep players logged into two games at once.

On the actual Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer side, the beta introduces Kill Block, a modular map that swaps chunks between rounds, alongside returning modes like Search and Destroy and a new Training Mobility Course. Nineteen weapons will reportedly be unlockable across the test, scaling from 3v3 skirmishes up to larger tank heavy modes. None of this addresses the core complaint that the game still looks like every Modern Warfare that came before it.

Everyone just finished enjoying stripped down Black Ops 1 and 2 ports, and now gets handed the most overcluttered version of this franchise yet, timed to land directly on top of Black Ops 7's own send off. Nobody asked for this collision. Activision built it anyway.
