Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5 is live. Here's what changed, what's free, what's bugged, and which quests you've already wrongly skipped in the Runes of Al

Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5 quietly hands you two free socket upgrades during the campaign. Most players in a rush will blow straight past both. Congratulations on running a 3-link into maps because you couldn't be bothered to read.
SUUP! WE know you maybe not interested in the exactly theme of this article… or else… or you’re here are missclicked. Any case… I have a CRINGEBLOG promocode for you. Which Is work for any offer in our shop. The sad news, is that I put it in almost every article… Buut… nobody use it… And it’s… impressively huge!
Act 2: Massdon Badlands: Find the Ruins of Aldur (also called Ezomyte Remnants). The curated bonus reward here is a Lesser Jeweller's Orb, which bumps your main skill to a 4-link. You can do this at the very start of Act 2. There is no excuse.
Act 4: Naganaku: Same drill. Find the Ruins of Aldur, complete it, collect your Greater Jeweller's Orb. That's your 5-link for free, before you even see a single map. Your main skill will feel noticeably less embarrassing after this.
The Act 4 Greater Jeweller's Orb reward doesn't trigger for roughly 10–20% of players. No confirmed fix. Zone reset may or may not help: nobody bothered testing it properly. If it's bugged for you, welcome to the unlucky minority. Try the Currency Exchange with Alva after Act 3.

The Runes of Aldur league mechanic is built around Ezomyte Remnants: ancient stone objects scattered through every zone. Interact with one, pick a rune recipe, and the remnant summons a wave of empowered monsters. Kill them, claim the reward. Simple enough that you could explain it to a golden retriever.
NPC Farrow shows up in Act 1 to introduce this. He gives you his book. You will largely ignore it until Act 4, when you realize it mattered all along.
Rune combinations determine what you craft. The simplest example: a Tempest Rune + Lightning Rune produces an Orb of Augmentation. Runeforging in PoE 2 scales through the entire game: ignore it in campaign and you'll be rebuilding your gear from scratch in maps like everyone else who ignored it in campaign.
A new defensive layer. It activates when you hit 1 Life and acts as a buffer before death: you spend Runic Ward to cast Kalguuran Skill gems. It's not optional if you plan to not die repeatedly in red maps.
GGG reworked several previously useless quests into permanent power sources. If you're the type to sprint the PoE 2 campaign guide and skip every side objective, this section is written specifically to punish you.
Kill the Great White One on Whakapanu Island. It drops a Shark Fin that eats 4 inventory slots until you deliver it to NPC Kaimana. Her location shifts depending on your Act 4 progress:
Hand it in, choose your reward. In 0.5, this now grants a permanent defensive bonus: your pick from 30% increased Armor/Evasion/Energy Shield or Armor applies to Elemental Damage + Deflection Rating. This is not a "spirit gem you'll never use." This is permanent. Do it.
Permanent Bonus: Act 4 Shark Fin Quest
Choose one: 30% increased Armor, Evasion, and Energy Shield OR Armor applies to Elemental Damage + Gain Deflection Rating equal to 12% of Evasion.
This runs through all four acts and unlocks new Rune Seeker quest rewards and recipes for the season mechanic. Skip it now and backtrack later. Your choice. The Act 3 zone Mystic Refuge with the vault door you can't open? That's tied to this. The Act 4 map quest that everyone ignored? Also this.
You will need these recipes. There is no version of this where skipping them turns out fine.

Why It Matters Now |
|
Tribal Medicine (Shark Fin) |
Act 4 |
Permanent defensive stat. Non-negotiable. |
|
Rune Seeker Quest Line |
Acts 1–4 |
Unlocks recipes & Runes of Aldur functionality. Backtrack tax if skipped. |
|
Map Quest (Act 4) |
Act 4 |
Reworked into Rune Seeker line. Unlocks more recipes. Previously worthless. |
The Runes of Aldur divine orb recipe exists. It can appear in any Remnant slot during the campaign. Multiple players pulled two raw divine orbs from it on day one. The economy implications are what you'd expect.
What to look for: a purple rune in the third slot of a Remnant. There are several purple runes, not all of them are the divine recipe: one is an exalted equivalent, which will briefly trick you into thinking you're rich. You are not. Check anyway. You're stopping at every Remnant regardless, so the cost is zero.
Stop at every Remnant. Check the slots. If you see a purple rune in slot 3, do it before you do anything else. If it's not the div recipe, you still get whatever bonus loot is curated for that area. There is no downside.
Early league economy note: Verisium farming Path of Exile will spike in price during the first 48–72 hours, same as every league reset. High-tier runes and Runic Alloys will follow. If you're playing day one, this window exists for you. If you're reading this later, it already closed.
PoE 2 0.5 campaign changes are broader than just the league mechanic. Two new Ascendancies arrived: Spiritwalker for the Huntress and Martial Artist for the Monk. Both are built well around the rune system. The Atlas was fully reset. All previously accumulated endgame progress means nothing, as expected.
Aldur's Legacy (also called Olroth's Legacy) is a new currency that destroys a Kalguuran or Ezomyte unique, extracts one of its modifiers, and turns it into a socketable rune. Mediocre uniques with one strong mod are now extraction fodder. Hoarding them is correct.
Put passive points into league mechanic nodes first. Quantity and Waystone bonuses multiply an already-working loop; they do not create one from nothing.

Try resetting the zone. If still broken, buy from Currency Exchange via Alva after Act 3. Roughly 4 orbs cost 17 Chaos.
It's visually purple in the third Remnant slot. Multiple purple variants exist; only one is the divine recipe. Check regardless: it costs nothing.
Technically optional until maps. Functionally mandatory. Skipping it means backtracking to unlock recipes you need anyway.
Armor-stacking builds take the elemental damage option. Everyone else takes the 30% flat defensive increase. Neither choice is wrong enough to matter.
Yes. The mechanic scales into endgame with Grand Expeditions and Pinnacle Bosses. Campaign Remnants are just the tutorial version.
