Patch 0.5.0 dropped Remnants into every zone. This guide covers slots, Runeshapes, Verisium Runeforging, and the Runes of Aldur league: without paddin
Every zone in the Runes of Aldur league contains a Remnant: a portable crafting station that GGG has graciously scattered across the map so you can ignore it for three hours, then panic about it later. It is an ancient object with engraved slots. You fill those slots with Runeshapes. It produces an item. Enemies try to stop you. This is the entire loop, and it replaced the old Expedition mechanic because apparently nothing is sacred.
Remnants spawn with 2 to 10 slots. Higher slot counts are rare. Higher slot counts also mean more enemy waves with runic modifiers stacked on top. The game is very honest about punishing ambition.
One Runeshape = one wave. Each wave adds runic modifiers to enemies. Fill all 10 slots and congratulate yourself on your funeral arrangements.
The math is simple. The dying is simpler. Here is the full breakdown of what you are agreeing to when you fill those PoE 2 Exalted Orb help:

Early league: cap yourself at 4-6 slots. The waves spiral faster than your ego if you lack single-target damage or mobility.
Runeshapes are collected as you explore maps. Each one you slot into a Remnant imprints a Runic Recipe onto the item you are crafting. More shapes = rarer output = more murderous enemies. The relationship is transactional and the Ezomytes are not negotiating.
Extended Rune System: Full Count
Monsters killed during a Remnant encounter drop Verisium Metal. It feeds the new Verisium Runeforging system, accessible after completing Farrow's Act 1 quest. What does it do? It adds Runic Ward to your armor: a defensive buffer that activates when you hit 1 HP.
Farm Verisium through campaign quests first. Do not attempt to skip directly to high-ilvl Ward application. The numbers will embarrass you.
Runic Ward only absorbs damage at exactly 1 HP. It is a last-resort mechanic dressed up as a defense layer. Plan accordingly. Or don't and learn the hard way.
Farrow is a new NPC added in Act 1 with 4 campaign quests. Each quest unlocks crafting features progressively. Do not skip him. The 8 new Kalguuran Support gems are gated behind Remnant crafting and include: Concussive Runes, Fist of Kalguur, Healing Runes, Kalguuran Conviction, Runeforged Blades, Runic Extraction, Runic Infusion, and Scouring Flame. That is a substantial list. Ancient Runes specifically unlock after Farrow's Act 4 quest: do not expect them before that.
The Ezomyte Runesmithing system rewards patience and punishes the slot-greedy. Here is the honest version of how to progress without losing your mind or your character:
The Recombinator has been disabled for the duration of this league. The Omen of Recombination is deleted: any you own vanish on login. GGG removed it because, combined with Meta Crafting Runes and the Genesis Tree, top-tier items would have been trivially accessible. The Verisium Runeforging and Alloys systems are the replacement: shifting crafting from chaotic gambling toward something closer to actual strategy. Whether that is better is a matter of taste and how much you enjoyed gambling.
The Atlas received a full reset. Complete Precursor Tower maps to raise The Fortress hub. Over 300 Atlas Passive Tree nodes are now available. The Arbiter of Divinity is the new Pinnacle Boss. Kill it five times consecutively and auto-complete entire Fortress sections: if your build is capable of that without blinking.

The Path of Exile 2 crafting system has never had more levers than in 0.5.0. Most of them pull toward the Remnant loop. The rest pull toward Verisium. None of them pull toward doing PoE 2 leveling service.

A portable crafting object found in every zone. Insert Runeshapes, fight waves, collect the crafted item. That is the entire mechanic.
Start at 4 slots. Six is the safe ceiling until your build can sustain heavy modifier waves without dying repeatedly to bad positioning.
New currency dropped by Remnant monsters. Spend it at Farrow to add Runic Ward to armor. Unlock the system in Act 1 first.
It absorbs damage only at 1 HP. It is a last-resort buffer, not a primary layer. Treat it as insurance, not a defense strategy.
The Ruins of Kingsmarch sits southeast of your Atlas starting location. Accessible after completing your first Precursor Tower map.
