PoE 2 patch 0.5.0 dropped and it's massive. New league, reworked Atlas, two Ascendancies, and a Runes system that will break your build. Read before y
Path of Exile 2 is a free-to-play ARPG that respects neither your time nor your sanity. Patch 0.5.0: titled Return of the Ancients: is the largest update in the game's early access history and the confirmed final major patch before the full 1.0 release. It introduces the Runes of Aldur League, a complete Atlas overhaul, two new Ascendancy classes, and a crafting system that will consume your waking hours. You were warned.
The game has eight playable classes. Class choice sets your starting position on a shared passive tree and determines your Ascendancy options. It does not lock you out of any skill gems: a Warrior can cast fire spells. Whether that's wise is a separate conversation.
Hard truth: Pick a build guide before you start. Playing blind through your first league means you'll hit a wall at Act 3 with a passive tree that contradicts itself.
Every class starts in a different area of the passive tree. Your primary attribute shapes which skills and gear your build naturally leans toward, but nothing is truly locked. For new players, the best starter build usually comes from a class that survives being played badly: which means anything tanky or with ranged PoE 2 progress help.

The passive skill tree contains over 1,500 nodes on a sprawling web shared by all classes. You gain one point per level. Do not panic. Do not freehand it on your first character. Early on, prioritize life or energy shield and your primary damage stat. Keystone nodes dramatically alter how your character functions: read them before you allocate.
In 0.5.0, all classes start in the center of the tree, and dual specialization lets you maintain two separate weapon-set loadouts with their own passives. This is not a beginner feature. Learn to walk first.
Dual specialization exists. You can swap between two skill setups mid-build. Don't touch it until Act 4.
Path of Exile 2 redesigned the gem system from scratch. Skills no longer drop from monsters: you receive Uncut Skill Gems as quest rewards and occasional drops. Use them to access the engraving window, which provides gem recommendations based on your weapon class. These suggestions are generally competent. Socket every active skill gem you find. Holding onto them accomplishes nothing.
Support gems modify active skills directly and no longer require linked sockets on gear. Level your gems: higher-level gems mean meaningfully higher damage output. This is not optional.
The Runes crafting system is the defining new mechanic of patch 0.5.0. Runes are socketed into gear to enhance damage or defenses. They cannot be removed once placed. Read that sentence again. Place them deliberately: on gear you intend to keep: not on the first rare helmet you find at level 12.
The Runes of Aldur league economy resets with this patch, meaning everyone starts fresh with no access to stored items from prior leagues. For new players, this is actually the ideal time to start: the playing field is as level as it will ever be.
Your life flask is not decorative. In Path of Exile 2, most deaths happen because players forget flasks exist until the moment they need them, which is too late. Upgrade your flasks at regular intervals: levels 4, 10, 16, 23, 30, 40, 50, and 60 are the key breakpoints. Use an Orb of Transmutation to convert normal flasks to magic for immediate benefits while leveling.
Prioritize boots with movement speed early. +10% at level 1, +15% at 15, +25% by 50. Movement speed is defense. Everything in this game will chase you.
Note: The campaign in 0.5.0 has significantly reworked layouts in the first few Acts. If you followed a video walkthrough from an older patch, some area layouts will not match any of PoE 2 pre-orders help.
When creating a character, choose a league. The Runes of Aldur League is the current seasonal league tied to patch 0.5.0: it includes the economy reset, all new content, and the Runes system. Standard League is permanent but stale. As a new player, play the current league. All your characters will transfer to Standard when it ends. Nothing is lost, just slower.
The campaign rewards permanent stat buffs that do not respawn. Missing them is not a catastrophe, but it is avoidable suffering. Each Act and Interlude contains bonus passive points, resistances, spirit bonuses, and flask recovery modifiers as quest rewards. Collect them.

|
Flask Recovery Mods |
+30% Life or Mana Recovery from Flasks: take life if you are dying, mana if you are not |
|

Extra tree points exclusively for your secondary weapon set |

Yes. Economy reset means everyone starts equally broke. New player disadvantage is minimal right now.
Yes, via Refund Points from quests and Orbs of Regret. Full respec is expensive. Plan before allocating.
Mercenary, Ranger, or Warrior. Forgiving, straightforward, and not dependent on understanding spirit mechanics.
No. Spirit Walker and Martial Artist are mechanically complex. Play them second or third character.
Clear Fortress maps first for passive points, then follow the Origins of Divinity questline to unlock Pinnacle Bosses.
