Walk into a cave with 10 Edge resist and a goblin holding anything sharp will send you straight to the loading screen. You were warned.

Notice the Fire Mage's High Robe of Fire: 60 Fire resist makes it untouchable by flame, but its physical stats are an insult. It is a specialized tool, not a general solution. The Gothic 1 Remake best armor for mages depends entirely on what is trying to kill you.
Worthless by late game, but it is free. Head to the Free Mine beyond the New Camp. Find Foreman Swiney outside his hut near the quarry entrance. Tell him you want to dig. Keep insisting. He will eventually hand you the Digger's Dress at no cost. Ten Edge resist feels like wearing a wet sack, but it is better than the nothing you spawned with.
Stack this free ring on top. Head northwest of the New Camp, follow the coastline to some ruined huts, kill the wolves, loot the cave corpse. Flat +10 Edge and +10 Blunt. It effectively doubles your early physical defense for zero Ore spent.
Ancient Ore Armor in Chapter 1 (Exploitable)
The Gothic 1 Remake Ancient Ore Armor location is Gomez's bedroom in the Old Camp castle, first room on the left upstairs. The chest requires his key. Options: beat Gomez down and loot him (Scar and Arto will be displeased), pickpocket him via the Fingers trainer, or lockpick with sufficient skill. Developers have flagged this as unintended access in Chapter 1: it may be patched. Use it while it lasts.
Old Camp gives Shadow's Dress. New Camp gives Bandit Dress. Swamp Camp gives Novice Armor. None of these are impressive out of the box, but all three are upgradeable through belts, gloves, and boots purchased from faction representatives. The upgrade system is where mid-tier sets stop being embarrassing.
Same source as above but a separate item. Inside his locked chamber, not his bedroom chest. The chamber key is also on Gomez. Save before you try anything. Scar hits like a natural disaster and Arto is not far behind.
Mountain Fortress. Chest in the lord's bedroom. The key is at the top of a tower that requires the climbing skill to reach. Budget for a golem either way: you will meet one. Wind and Ice resistances make this uniquely useful in the late game's elemental encounters.
Every Gothic 1 Remake faction armor set starts mediocre and scales with upgrades. The Old Camp's Shadow set edges ahead in early game versatility: its base Edge resist is slightly higher, and even a small 2-point elemental resist beats Digger's Dress's zeroes. If you plan a magic-heavy build or expect elemental enemies early, the Shadow path wins clearly.
The Fire Mage and Water Mage robes are endgame mage gear, not general armor. They are ranked B not because they are bad, but because their physical resist is so low that melee enemies laugh at you. Pick your fights accordingly or do not pick them at all.
The Gothic 1 Remake armor upgrade system splits your total protection across body pieces, belts, gloves, and boots. Each slot adds resistance independently. This matters because a fully upgraded faction set can outperform a raw single-piece set in specific damage categories. Plan your purchases based on what enemies actually use, not what looks impressive on a character screen.
Accessories stack on top of armor. The Ring of Iron Skin does not care what you are wearing: it adds regardless. Early game, this ring is more valuable per Ore-not-spent than anything Fisk sells you at 313 Ore a pop. Do not let merchants convince you otherwise.
