You cannot summon a chocobo companion just because you have one as a mount. Two separate quests. Two separate brain cells required. First, complete My Little Chocobo at level 20 during the main scenario. Then reach level 30 and find Docette in Camp Tranquil (South Shroud) for My Feisty Little Chocobo. Done. Now you own a barely competent bird that dies to AoEs.
Summoning costs one Gysahl Green: purchasable from any capital city vendor for approximately 36 gil. If you cannot afford that, uninstall. When your chocobo dies or you dismiss it, just toss another Green. It is not emotional. Do it.
Important
Chocobo companions cannot enter instanced dungeons, raids, or field operations. Keep your bird in the barn during A-rank trains or your FC will never forgive you.
Your chocobo earns EXP only from killing mobs in the open world. Not FATEs. Not quests. Not levequests. Just dead enemies. The rank scales from 1 to 20, and the only sane way to do this is to grind FATEs anyway: the mob kills happen automatically while you collect seals for other things.
The Challenge Log (unlocked via the level 15 quest "Rising to the Challenge" from Iyyokko in Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks) grants massive FFXIV chocobo leveling boosts via the Bosom Buddies entries: 5% of current rank EXP for 20 kills, 10% for 100 kills. Do these weekly. They exist to help you not want to quit the game.
Rank Cap Warning
At rank 10, your chocobo flatlines and refuses all further EXP. You must feed it a Thavnairian Onion to unlock each subsequent rank. This repeats every rank past 10. Stock up early or enjoy watching the progress bar do nothing.
Own or rent housing with a chocobo stable. Feed once per hour for passive EXP. Other players can feed your bird while you are offline. Keep the stable clean with a Magic Stable Broom (market board) or EXP gains are reduced. Complete the level 30 quest from Luquelot in Central Shroud to unlock stable raising. This is the one time the game rewards you for doing chores.
Each rank-up grants SP. Skills must be assigned manually in the Companion menu under the Skills tab: they do not auto-equip because nothing is ever convenient. There are three trees: Defender, Attacker, and Healer. At rank 20 you can max all three. Before that, prioritize correctly or suffer.
The chocobo skill build priority for anyone playing a non-healer job is clear: start Healer, grab Choco Regen immediately, then Choco Cure. These two abilities alone dramatically increase open-world survivability. Choco Regen lands on you constantly; Choco Cure fires when you actually need it. After those are secured, dump everything into Attacker. The Defender tree exists theoretically: the chocobo cannot hold enmity against a DPS player who is trying.

Changed your mind? Reagan Pepper resets all skills: 20 Allied Seals from your Hunt Billmaster or 48,000 Grand Company seals from the Quartermaster. You will use this at least once because you made bad choices early.
Leave the chocobo on Free Stance almost always: it handles heals and offense at its own discretion, which in 2025 is actually passable. Switch to Attacker Stance only when you want maximum damage output and do not need healing. Switch to Healer Stance only when you are actively dying and Choco Cure is the only thing standing between you and a floor sprint.
All chocobos begin as Desert Yellow (RGB 219/180/87). Changing this requires a stable, the right fruit in the right order, and six hours of your life. Yoshida has confirmed he believes you bond with a bird by doing this process manually. Yoshida is a genius. This is also insane.
Use ffxivchocobo: select your current color, select your target, hit Calculate, then click View Feeding Order. Do not skip the feeding order. The RGB value shifts with each fruit, and feeding in the wrong sequence pushes you into a color you will be living with for the next six hours whether you like it or not.
Each dye fruit shifts the feather's RGB value by approximately ±5 points per channel. Chocobo color calculator FFXIV tools exist precisely because the math is invisible to the player. Feeding begins the six-hour window. Every additional fruit fed during that window stacks. Remove the bird from the stable at any point and everything resets. All fruit wasted. The bird stays yellow. You learn patience the hard way.
Feed a Han Lemon to instantly reset back to Desert Yellow at any time. The one merciful mechanic in this entire system.

The "new feathers" message during feeding confirms the color value has crossed into a new target range. No message means keep feeding. After the 6-hour timer, the feather color snaps to the nearest valid color in the game's color table. Metallic and special dye colors are unavailable: no chrome chocobo for you.
Navigate to the Companion menu, then the Appearance tab. Head, body, and legs slots are independent: mix freely. This is how you avoid looking like every other player who bought one expensive barding off the market board and called it done. Chocobo barding combinations FFXIV have more variety than most players realize before rank 20.
Bardings are purely cosmetic. They provide zero stat benefits. You dress the bird because you want to, not because it helps you survive. Respect that honesty.
Your chocobo companion follows you into open-world content in Evercold zones. FFXIV Evercold chocobo survivability depends heavily on how well you have invested in the Healer tree: Choco Regen will fire constantly in harsh environments, and Choco Cure will cover gaps when your own job class lacks self-sustain. Reach rank 20 before entering Evercold content if you want a companion that actually helps rather than decorates the ground next to you.
The chocobo companion open world solo use case is strongest here. Think of it as a pocket healer that also does respectable chocobo DPS build FFXIV numbers at rank 20: without the passive-aggression of an actual player healer.

Feed it a Thavnairian Onion. It needs one per rank past 10. Buy from the Market Board or complete the relevant quests.
Combine FATE grinding for kill EXP with weekly Challenge Log entries and hourly stable feeding. All three simultaneously.
Yes. Reagan Pepper resets all skills: 20 Allied Seals from the Hunt Billmaster or 48,000 Grand Company seals.
You fed in the wrong order, missed fruits, or removed the chocobo from the stable mid-timer. Start over with Han Lemon and follow the feeding order exactly.
No. Bardings are cosmetic only. Zero stat impact. Dress the bird for vanity, not performance.
