Marvel Rivals Season 8.5 Tier List: Best Heroes Ranked

Marvel Rivals Season 8.5 introduced Cyclops: leader of the X-Men, king of a visor, and, predictably, already S-tier. This is fine. Every new hero enters broken; the meta adjusts around them like a body fighting an infection. Meanwhile, the Marvel Rivals Season 8.5 meta remains brutally brawl-focused. If your team isn't punching someone in the face at close range, you're probably losing.

Devil Dinosaur stormed into Season 8.0 as an instant top-tier Vanguard and hasn't been dethroned. Phoenix and Star-Lord kept receiving DPS buffs that no reasonable person asked for, resulting in a Duelist meta so predictable that competitive bans write themselves. The counterplay to the best heroes in Marvel Rivals right now is simply knowing which four characters to ban.

Full Tier List

This list targets Diamond rank and above. If you're Bronze, you don't have a meta problem: you have a fundamentals problem. Also valid; just a different issue.

Tier

Heroes

Notes

S

Cyclops · Phoenix · Star-Lord · Gambit · Invisible Woman · Elsa Bloodstone · Venom · Bruce Banner · Devil Dinosaur · Emma Frost · Rocket Raccoon

Pick these or ban them. There is no in-between.

A

The Thing · Winter Soldier · White Fox · Daredevil · Psylocke · Iron Fist · Thor · Magneto · Hulk · Moon Knight · Groot · Namor

Strong when S-tier is banned out. Competent counters in the right hands.

B

Blade · Deadpool (DPS) · Human Torch · Angela · Storm · Iron Man · Ultron · Adam Warlock · Spider-Man · Captain America · Rogue

Situational at best. Spider-Man got a buff; it barely mattered.

C

Black Widow · Scarlet Witch · Squirrel Girl · Luna Snow · Doctor Strange · Mister Fantastic · Hawkeye

Some have loyal mains. Those mains are suffering.

Note on C-tier: A low rank is not an excuse to play these. It is a warning.

Duelists (DPS)

S-Tier Duelists

Phoenix and Star-Lord received buffs that turned an already stifling DPS meta into an outright oppressive one. Both reward aggression and punish passive play: which happens to describe most of the enemy team you'll face in ranked. Marvel Rivals best DPS characters discussions now basically start and end here. Elsa Bloodstone remains an elite pick for consistent damage at range; she doesn't need the spotlight to quietly top the scoreboard.

The New Addition: Cyclops

Season 8.5's new Duelist is, by early data, another case of a hero launching overpowered while players figure out how to play against him. The Cyclops Marvel Rivals guide community is still forming consensus. Until that happens, he sits at S-tier by default. Expect nerfs by mid-season. Enjoy him while the developers still feel guilty about the release cadence.

What's Sinking

  • Hela dropped to A-tier: Phoenix's rise stole her kills and her identity.
  • Hawkeye fell off hard. One-shots are great, but mobile enemies make him a liability.
  • Black Widow remains at the bottom, season after season, a monument to wasted potential.
  • Scarlet Witch locks onto enemies for slow damage. Ranked players don't wait around to be drained slowly.

Vanguards (Tanks)

The Marvel Rivals Vanguard tier list finally has new blood at the top. Devil Dinosaur debuted in Season 8.0 as one of the strongest tanks in the game. He is still being mastered, still S-tier, and still eating players whole. Venom and Hulk anchor the brawl meta that defines competitive play right now: dive and close-range pressure is how games get won.

Who Climbed

The Thing quietly moved into A-tier relevance. The brawl meta suits him, and he serves as a reliable check on enemy divers: a role that becomes more important the higher you climb. Emma Frost received a notable buff in 8.0 that restored her meta viability after months of being an afterthought.

Who Fell

Deadpool (tank variant) was nerfed hard enough that his streak at the top of the meta finally ended. The nerfs were severe and the performance data shows it. Captain America and Rogue remain stuck in B-tier, casualties of CC changes that gutted their core toolkit several patches ago.

Doctor Strange, once a meta cornerstone, has been reduced to a portal delivery service. There is no reason to pick him for his combat kit. There is one reason to pick him: a last-second push portal: and it barely justifies the slot.

Strategists (Support)

Gambit received another nerf to his ultimate, but it's moderate enough that he remains S-tier. If you're playing ranked without him or Invisible Woman in your support line, you're making things harder on yourself. The Marvel Rivals support tier list Season 8.5 is blunt: these two are the spine of any competitive composition.

Rocket Raccoon: Finally Treated Like a Person

Multiple buffs in the 8.0 patch restored Rocket's relevance. He's survivable again, he's useful again, and he's settling into low S-tier. The community celebrated. White Fox received a sidegrade that lowered her skill ceiling but raised her floor: less ceiling, more consistency. The ranked meta rewards consistency, so she's still A-tier.

  • Loki dropped to A-tier after a nerf hit his survivability hard enough to matter.
  • Luna Snow occupies the worst possible position: too difficult for lower ranks, too weak for high ranks.
  • Adam Warlock and other fliers are grounded: Hela and Phoenix are everywhere, and the sky is not safe.

Top Team-Up Combos

Season 8.5 brought Bestial Hunt: Punisher paired with Daredevil. It upgrades Punisher's grenade kit. It's decent. The real Marvel Rivals team-up abilities ranked story this season is the continued dominance of established S-tier synergies.

Heroes

Tier

Why It Matters

Lucky Loan

Black Cat · White Fox · Captain America

S

White Fox gains auto-healing AoE; Cap reflects damage. Huge upgrade for all three.

Arcane Order

Doctor Strange · Magik

S

Magik gets lockdown on slippery opponents. She now secures kills she couldn't before.

Vibrant Vitality

Varies

A

Built to enable double-healer comps. Strong setup, strong payoff.

Bestial Hunt

Punisher · Daredevil

A

New this season. Punisher's grenades upgraded. Functional, not spectacular.

Fastball Special

Bruce Banner · The Thing · Wolverine

B

Widely considered the worst team-up in the game. Avoid.

What to Actually Pick

The Marvel Rivals ranked tier list guide advice is simple: the brawl meta rewards teams that can fight in tight spaces. Dive compositions with Venom, Hulk, and a DPS who can follow up: Phoenix, Psylocke, or Iron Fist: are the current competitive blueprint. Two healers, specifically Gambit and Rocket or Invisible Woman, remain non-negotiable at Diamond and above.

Ban Priority

  1. Phoenix: buffs made her oppressive, ban on sight
  2. Star-Lord: same energy, same result
  3. Gambit: if you don't, the enemy heals through everything
  4. Devil Dinosaur: new, strong, still being mastered, not worth letting through
  5. Cyclops: no full data yet, treat as S-tier threat until proven otherwise

Counter Picks Worth Knowing

The Marvel Rivals counter pick Season 8.5 meta rewards reading the enemy comp before locking in. Mobility counters Hawkeye into irrelevance. The Thing specifically counters dive-heavy lineups. Magneto handles ranged compositions cleanly. None of this matters if you instalock without reading the lobby, which describes a significant portion of the playerbase.

Mister Fantastic continues his slow journey toward irrelevance. CC changes hurt him specifically. His buffs in 8.0 changed nothing meaningful. He remains the answer to a question nobody is asking in ranked play.

Is Cyclops good in Season 8.5?

What supports should I play in ranked?

Gambit and Invisible Woman. Every other choice is a downgrade until proven otherwise at Diamond rank.

Why is Black Widow still C-tier?
