FFXIV Phantom Jobs Guide: Mastery, Unlocks, And The New North Horn Roster

Phantom Job mastery is the single biggest power boost inside Occult Crescent, and it comes from something as unglamorous as grinding out the level cap of each job. Every job you take to max level grants a permanent Phantom Mastery stack, giving 2 percent additive damage and healing potency for that character inside the zone. Stack enough of them and you go from feeling like a wet paper bag to actually contributing in North Horn's tougher encounters.

On top of the mastery grind, eight new Phantom Jobs are confirmed for Occult Crescent: North Horn, bringing the total roster to 24 once patch 7.55 lands. This guide covers how FFXIV Phantom Job mastery actually works, how to unlock the current roster efficiently, and everything confirmed so far about the new jobs joining the system.

How Phantom Job Leveling Actually Works

Each Phantom Job levels independently by killing enemies and completing objectives inside Occult Crescent. Phantom Freelancer is the odd one out: instead of gaining its own experience, it levels based on how many other Phantom Jobs you have progressed, eventually turning into a flexible toolkit that borrows traits from everything you have mastered. One important limitation to keep in mind: Phantom Actions cannot critically hit, and their damage is capped based on your item level, so do not expect these skills to carry a fight on their own.

The Full Current Phantom Job Roster

As of patch 7.51, there are 16 Phantom Jobs available, split between the original 13 from patch 7.25 and three added in patch 7.4. Here is how to grab each one.

Fastest Order To Unlock And Level Everything

Grab your free starting jobs first, then head straight for the Occult Crescent Phantom Job shards sold with Silver Pieces, since those three (Time Mage, Cannoneer, Chemist) are the cheapest and give you utility early. Gold Pieces take longer to farm, so save Samurai, Geomancer, and Thief for once you are already running Critical Encounters regularly. The three random drop jobs, Berserker, Ranger, and Oracle, are pure luck, so do not go out of your way chasing a specific one; they will show up naturally the more Critical Encounters you clear.

New to the zone or just relearning mechanics? Level a support job like Chemist or Time Mage first. Chemist gives you raises and healing to cover your own mistakes, and Time Mage's haste keeps a struggling group alive long enough to learn a fight instead of wiping to it repeatedly.

Why Phantom Job Mastery Before North Horn Matters

North Horn raises the Knowledge Level cap to 40 and adds eight more Phantom Jobs on top of the existing 16, meaning the ceiling for total mastery stacks is about to get a lot higher. Since Phantom Mastery bonuses are permanent per character and apply the moment you enter the zone, every job you master now is free damage and healing you get to keep when the new zone opens. Players who show up with a fully mastered roster will simply have an easier time than those starting from scratch on patch day.

The Eight New North Horn Phantom Jobs

Based on what was shown during the relevant Letter from the Producer LIVE broadcast, the incoming lineup for the Occult Crescent North Horn roster is Black Mage, White Mage, Summoner, Red Mage, Dragoon, Ninja, Blue Mage, and Necromancer. That is a noticeable shift toward classic caster and specialist archetypes, filling a gap the current roster has had since launch, where Time Mage was the only real caster option.

Full skill lists, unlock costs, and drop sources for these eight jobs have not been published yet. Going by how the first 16 jobs were handled, new jobs tend to follow one of three unlock patterns: early quest rewards, currency purchases through the Expedition Antiquarian, or random drops from specific Critical Encounters. Necromancer stands out as the only entirely new concept with no existing FFXIV job counterpart, similar to how Chemist and Geomancer worked when the system first launched.

Practical Tips For Efficient Mastery Grinding

Farm Silver and Gold currency passively while doing your Phantom Weapon relic steps, since FATEs and Critical Encounters that reward currency often overlap with relic material farming. Prioritize whichever job your current party composition is missing, since a full group with a Chemist and a Time Mage clears content noticeably faster than one stacked with only damage-focused jobs. With 24 total Phantom Jobs once North Horn releases, full mastery becomes a long term goal rather than something to chase in a single weekend, and that is fine, since every mastery stack is permanent whenever you get around to earning it.

Final Word

Phantom Job mastery is a long grind by design, but it does not require perfection before patch 7.55 hits. Focus on unlocking the full current roster, master whichever jobs round out your playstyle, and treat the eight incoming North Horn jobs as the next phase of the same system once the full patch notes confirm their unlock methods.
