10 June, 2026

The 2026 FIFA World Cup runs June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It is the first tournament held in three countries simultaneously. FIFA, never content to leave history alone, also expanded the field to 48 teams and invented a Round of 32 to go with it. The final is at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Coldplay is involved in the halftime show. You were warned.

The World Cup 2026 bracket is structured across two stages. First, the group stage. Then, the part where things actually matter.
Group Stage→Round of 32→Round of 16→Quarterfinals→Semifinals→Final
Twelve groups. Forty-eight teams. Some of these nations qualified by beating opponents who qualified only because there are 48 spots now. Enjoy the parity.

The World Cup 2026 groups reveal the usual story: Spain and Argentina in draws so gentle they could sleep through the group stage, France handed a group that respects their feelings, and the USA placed in a bracket where losing to Turkey would be a national emergency. Business as usual.
Prediction markets put Spain and France as co-favorites at roughly 16% each. Defending champion Argentina sits sixth. This is what happens when you expand to 48 teams: probability gets diluted until everyone's a contender and nobody is.
The printable World Cup 2026 bracket is already circulating in offices where people believe in brackets. Spain leads all 48 teams in projected goals. Argentina, pressure-free since Messi won in 2022, enters as perhaps the most dangerous undervalued pick. Messi, Julian Alvarez, and Lautaro Martinez share 167 international goals between them. Jordan has zero chance.
Dark horse: Japan. Knocked out Germany and Spain in 2022. Now drawn against the Netherlands and projected by ESPN to win their group. Everyone will forget this until it happens.
Sixteen cities. Three countries. This is the first World Cup held across three nations, which means your viewing schedule now requires a geography lesson in addition to a football one. The US hosts 60 of 80 matches, including everything from the quarterfinals onward. Canada and Mexico host 10 each, which is fair given that the US paid for most of the infrastructure improvements FIFA required.

Estadio Azteca in Mexico City opens the tournament on June 11 with Mexico vs. South Africa: a replay of the 2010 opener. At 83,000 capacity, it is the largest venue in the competition. The final at MetLife, at 82,500, is second. Coldplay will be performing at the latter. This information is provided without editorial comment.
The World Cup 2026 knockout stage begins June 28 and runs through July 19. What follows is 22 days of football where every result is permanent and no amount of possession statistics will console you afterward.
The bracket uses a two-pathway seeding system. Spain and Argentina are separated. France and England are separated. This is FIFA's attempt to guarantee a final worth watching. Whether it works is another matter. The bracket has 495 possible combinations for how third-placed teams are slotted, which FIFA published in full in Annex C of the tournament regulations. Nobody has read Annex C.
Key Knockout Dates
Ties go to extra time (2x15 min), then penalties. The penalty shootout has ended the dreams of nations with larger economies than yours. It remains the fairest unfair thing in sport.
32 teams from group stage enter single-elimination rounds. Lose once, go home. Simple.
ESPN, FIFA.com, and every sports outlet publish printable brackets. Print one. Ruin it by matchday 4.
Spain and France lead odds. Argentina defends. Brazil is there. England will lose on penalties.

32 total: top two per group, plus eight best third-place finishers. More than ever. Obviously.
