Apex Legends Hemlok Guide

Named, delightfully, after a poison that killed Socrates: a man considered one of history's greatest thinkers: the Hemlok was presumably named with full awareness that it would be handed to players who run directly at shotgun-wielding enemies at five meters. The plant's genus, Conium, derives from the Greek for "to spin" or "to whirl," which is also exactly what your crosshair does every time you try to land a burst on a strafing target. Poetic.

The Hemlok is the only assault rifle in the Apex arsenal that fires in bursts rather than full-auto. This is either a strength or a fatal character flaw depending on your disposition, your aim, and how much therapy you currently have access to. It is often called "easy to learn, hard to master": which is just the gaming community's polite way of saying most people are bad at it.

Base Statistics

Here are the cold, unfeeling numbers behind this weapon. Memorize them. Weep over them. Tattoo them on your forearm if that helps: it won't, but the commitment is admirable.

Stat

Value

Note

Ammo Type

Heavy Rounds

Pick up every packet you see. You'll need it.

Damage (Body: Burst)

18 per shot / 54 per burst

If all three bullets hit, which they won't.

Damage (Head: Burst)

24 per shot / 72 per burst

Lovely in theory.

Base Magazine Size

18 rounds (6 bursts)

Generous enough to feel false hope.

Extended Mag Lv.1

21 rounds

A white attachment that helps nobody.

Extended Mag Lv.2

24 rounds

Getting somewhere. Slowly.

Extended Mag Lv.3

30 rounds

Now you're cooking. Mostly.

Extended Mag Lv.4 (Gold)

Auto-reload passive

Obtained by being favored by the loot gods.

Fire Modes

Burst / Single-Fire

Two modes. Zero excuses.

Effective Range

Medium to Long

Do not try to out-R-99 someone at 5 meters.

Note: Damage figures do not reflect the 15% reduction applied against Fortified Legends (Gibraltar, Caustic). They are also invincible against your panic-spraying in a 1v3 situation.

Fire Modes

The Hemlok graciously provides two ways to engage targets. Both are wrong in different circumstances, and you will inevitably choose the wrong one at the critical moment. Below is an honest breakdown.

3-Round Burst

  • Default fire mode
  • Higher total damage potential per trigger pull
  • Recoil pattern lifts upward, returns to baseline: learn it or lose it
  • Ideal at medium range with disciplined fire rhythm
  • Fire, let recoil settle, fire again: patience rewarded, impatience punished
  • Can down an unshielded enemy in under half a second if all hits connect
  • Will not help you at close quarters, and you will try anyway

Semi-Automatic

  • One precise bullet per trigger pull
  • Lower damage per cycle, higher accuracy reward
  • Ideal when your target will not stop moving like a panicking rabbit
  • Recommended for long-range engagements where burst spread punishes you
  • Pairs beautifully with a 2x-4x Variable AOG scope
  • Slower effective DPS: do not enter close range expecting to win
  • Toggle with a button press. Actually remember to toggle, for once.

The Recoil: Your True Enemy

In burst mode, the Hemlok's recoil pattern moves upward sharply then returns to approximately the same position. Unlike weapons that send your crosshair spiraling into the upper atmosphere, the Hemlok is actually controllable: assuming you respect the rhythm. Fire a burst, let the gun settle, fire another. If you hold down the trigger hoping for something to happen, nothing will happen except your death and mild embarrassment.

In single-fire, pull down gently to compensate for the slight upward drift. Your enemies will still strafe. Nothing in this guide prevents that.

The Recoil: Your True Enemy

Attachments

The Hemlok accepts four attachment slots, which is actually generous considering how ungrateful this gun will be when you miss three bursts in a row. Prioritize in this order: Barrel first, Stock second, Magazine third, Optics last.

Barrel Stabilizer

Your single most important pickup. Reduces recoil, decreases muzzle flash, makes life marginally worth living. Hunt this down first. Do not be precious about rarity: even a white one helps.

Standard Stock

Reduces ADS speed and improves general handling. You'll want at least a blue (Rare) version. The Epic variant gives you that silky-smooth feel you absolutely do not deserve at your current skill level.

Extended Heavy Mag

Bumps your 18-round magazine up to 30 at Lv.3. The golden version (Lv.4) gives auto-reload. You will find neither of these when you actually need them. Stock up on regular heavy ammo instead.

2x-4x Variable AOG

The recommended optic. Variable zoom for both medium and longer engagements. A 3x HCOG "Ranger" is also excellent. Refreshingly, the Hemlok's iron sights are among the cleanest in the game: you can comfortably run it naked-sighted and no one will judge you. Much.

The Boosted Loader (Hop-Up)

At various points in Apex's balance history, the Hemlok has been compatible with the Boosted Loader hop-up. When active, this attachment accelerates reload speed on tactical reloads and adds bonus rounds to the magazine if you reload while it's close to empty. Think of it as the game rewarding dangerous behavior. It granted 20% recoil reduction, 30% less randomness, and reduced muzzle flash. It is not always in the loot pool: check current season patch notes to confirm availability before planning your entire strategy around it for the exactly Apex rank carry.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Every weapon in Apex Legends has a purpose. Some are more forgiving of incompetence than others. The Hemlok is not one of those weapons. Below is a clinical inventory of what this gun does for you and what it absolutely refuses to do.

Why You Should Love It

  • Exceptional medium-to-long range damage output when burst lands cleanly
  • High damage per burst: body shots deal 54 total, headshots 72
  • Dual fire mode adaptability for different engagement distances
  • Surprisingly clean iron sights: no scope required
  • Manageable, predictable recoil in burst mode
  • Pairs extremely well with close-range secondaries like the R-99 or Shotguns
  • Fast bullet travel speed: hits register quickly at range
  • Consistent meta presence across multiple seasons
  • Can strip shields and down opponents in 2-3 bursts with good aim

Why You Will Hate It

  • Actively punishes panic fire and close-range encounters
  • No full-auto mode: your brainstem will forget this mid-fight
  • High skill ceiling means bad results punish you more than other ARs
  • Requires actual aim, not spray-and-pray theology
  • Burst spread widens if you fire without letting recoil recover
  • Genuinely outclassed at close range by nearly every other weapon
  • Small base magazine (18 rounds) without attachments
  • Requires heavy ammo: competes with Flatline and Wingman for it
  • Ranked just below the Flatline in most current tier lists

How Not to Embarrass Yourself

The following tips are provided in good faith. Their effectiveness is directly proportional to the amount of time you spend in the Firing Range practicing instead of immediately queuing ranked. Which is to say: go practice.

  1. Respect the burst rhythm. The Hemlok's burst fires three rounds rapidly, then pauses. The correct play is to fire: wait for the recoil to return to baseline: then fire again. The incorrect play is to hold the trigger like you're wrestling it. You will miss. The enemy will not miss you.
  2. Switch to single-fire at long range. If your target is actively strafing and at significant distance, the burst spread becomes your enemy. Toggle to single-fire with a button press and pick your shots. One accurate bullet beats three enthusiastic misses every time.
  3. Grab a close-range secondary. The Hemlok is not a close-quarters weapon. This is not a debate. Pair it with an R-99, a Volt SMG, an EVA-8, or anything that fires before your enemy's shotgun empties into your skull. The Hemlok is the patient sniper; your secondary is the panic button.
  4. Prioritize a Barrel Stabilizer above all else. Before the scope, before the mag, before any other attachment: hunt down a Barrel Stabilizer. This single attachment transforms the Hemlok from a frustrating experiment into a functional weapon. Without it, you are choosing suffering.
  5. Use the iron sights until you find a real scope. The Hemlok's default iron sights are genuinely among the best in the game. You can run without optics and perform perfectly respectably. Do not grab the first white 1x HCOG just because it fills the slot. Wait for a 2x-4x Variable AOG or a 3x HCOG "Ranger."
  6. Cover your teammates: you are not the initiator. The Hemlok is a support-from-a-distance weapon. Provide high-damage cover fire while your teammates advance. Do not be the person who rushes in with a burst rifle. That person always dies first, and their teammates always shake their heads.
  7. Practice the timing in the Firing Range. The difference between a good and bad Hemlok player comes down almost entirely to muscle memory. Spend twenty minutes drilling burst rhythm at various ranges before loading into a real match. It is boring. It works. Pick one.

Meta & Tier Standing

The Hemlok occupies a complicated position in the Apex meta: solidly useful, rarely the first pick, occasionally dominant when the right player picks it up. In most tier lists it sits squarely below the VK-47 Flatline (which does similar work with far less patience required) and above weapons that embarrass themselves at every range. Respectable company, if not glamorous.

Current Meta Snapshot

Tier Position. A-tier for skilled players. B-tier for everyone else. That is not an insult: that is an honest performance curve. all other can go Apex account service.

Primary Rival: VK-47 Flatline: full-auto, heavy ammo, forgiving recoil. The Flatline is what the Hemlok would be if it had fewer principles.

Season Updates: Hip-fire accuracy has been buffed in past patches. Boosted Loader hop-up compatibility has varied by season. Always verify current patch notes before building around a hop-up.

Tournament Presence" Seen in competitive play when players invest the time to master burst discipline. Consistent enough to be trusted in organized matches, which is more than most weapons can claim.

Skill Requirement: Higher than average. Below sniper rifles. The gap between floor and ceiling is where the Hemlok earns its reputation as a weapon that rewards investment.

Apex Legends Hemlok Guide FAQ

Is the Hemlok good in Apex Legends?

Yes, at medium-to-long range. No, up close. Exceptional in the right hands, punishing in the wrong ones.

Should I use burst mode or single-fire on the Hemlok?

Burst for medium range, single-fire for long distance. Switch modes based on engagement distance, not panic.

What is the best attachment for the Hemlok?

A Barrel Stabilizer, without question. Grab it first, above magazine, stock, and every optic in the zip.

What weapon should I pair with the Hemlok?

Any fast close-range weapon: R-99, EVA-8, or Wingman. The Hemlok handles range; your secondary handles everything else.

How do I control the Hemlok's recoil in burst mode?

Fire one burst, pause for recoil recovery, then fire again. Rushing it widens spread and guarantees missed shots.
