New guide live: The Apex Legends Hemlok Burst AR: damage stats, attachment priority, fire mode tactics, and loadouts. Everything you need to stop miss
Named, delightfully, after a poison that killed Socrates: a man considered one of history's greatest thinkers: the Hemlok was presumably named with full awareness that it would be handed to players who run directly at shotgun-wielding enemies at five meters. The plant's genus, Conium, derives from the Greek for "to spin" or "to whirl," which is also exactly what your crosshair does every time you try to land a burst on a strafing target. Poetic.
The Hemlok is the only assault rifle in the Apex arsenal that fires in bursts rather than full-auto. This is either a strength or a fatal character flaw depending on your disposition, your aim, and how much therapy you currently have access to. It is often called "easy to learn, hard to master": which is just the gaming community's polite way of saying most people are bad at it.
Here are the cold, unfeeling numbers behind this weapon. Memorize them. Weep over them. Tattoo them on your forearm if that helps: it won't, but the commitment is admirable.

The Hemlok graciously provides two ways to engage targets. Both are wrong in different circumstances, and you will inevitably choose the wrong one at the critical moment. Below is an honest breakdown.
3-Round Burst
Semi-Automatic
In burst mode, the Hemlok's recoil pattern moves upward sharply then returns to approximately the same position. Unlike weapons that send your crosshair spiraling into the upper atmosphere, the Hemlok is actually controllable: assuming you respect the rhythm. Fire a burst, let the gun settle, fire another. If you hold down the trigger hoping for something to happen, nothing will happen except your death and mild embarrassment.
In single-fire, pull down gently to compensate for the slight upward drift. Your enemies will still strafe. Nothing in this guide prevents that.

The Hemlok accepts four attachment slots, which is actually generous considering how ungrateful this gun will be when you miss three bursts in a row. Prioritize in this order: Barrel first, Stock second, Magazine third, Optics last.
Your single most important pickup. Reduces recoil, decreases muzzle flash, makes life marginally worth living. Hunt this down first. Do not be precious about rarity: even a white one helps.
Reduces ADS speed and improves general handling. You'll want at least a blue (Rare) version. The Epic variant gives you that silky-smooth feel you absolutely do not deserve at your current skill level.
Bumps your 18-round magazine up to 30 at Lv.3. The golden version (Lv.4) gives auto-reload. You will find neither of these when you actually need them. Stock up on regular heavy ammo instead.
The recommended optic. Variable zoom for both medium and longer engagements. A 3x HCOG "Ranger" is also excellent. Refreshingly, the Hemlok's iron sights are among the cleanest in the game: you can comfortably run it naked-sighted and no one will judge you. Much.
At various points in Apex's balance history, the Hemlok has been compatible with the Boosted Loader hop-up. When active, this attachment accelerates reload speed on tactical reloads and adds bonus rounds to the magazine if you reload while it's close to empty. Think of it as the game rewarding dangerous behavior. It granted 20% recoil reduction, 30% less randomness, and reduced muzzle flash. It is not always in the loot pool: check current season patch notes to confirm availability before planning your entire strategy around it for the exactly Apex rank carry.
Every weapon in Apex Legends has a purpose. Some are more forgiving of incompetence than others. The Hemlok is not one of those weapons. Below is a clinical inventory of what this gun does for you and what it absolutely refuses to do.
The following tips are provided in good faith. Their effectiveness is directly proportional to the amount of time you spend in the Firing Range practicing instead of immediately queuing ranked. Which is to say: go practice.
Because the Hemlok covers medium-to-long range and handles close quarters with the grace of a filing cabinet, it demands a competent partner. Consider the following combinations.
Hemlok (fully kitted) + R-99 SMG. The textbook pairing. You handle anything beyond fifteen meters, your R-99 handles anything at conversational distance. Slightly competing on heavy vs. light ammo, but the combination of ranges covered makes this one of the most complete loadouts available. This is what your teammates wish you were running.
Hemlok + Wingman. For those who enjoy the aristocratic practice of aiming before shooting. Both weapons reward precision and punish spray. The Wingman handles close-to-medium range encounters with decisive stopping power while the Hemlok manages longer sightlines. Both use heavy ammo, which means excellent resource efficiency and one less thing to think about.
Hemlok + EVA-8 Auto Shotgun. You hang at distance, chip shields, force enemies out of cover, then close to shotgun range for cleanup. Slightly chaotic. Surprisingly effective. The Hemlok does the intelligent work; the EVA-8 does the satisfying work. You will feel smart exactly twice before doing something reckless with the shotgun.
The Hemlok occupies a complicated position in the Apex meta: solidly useful, rarely the first pick, occasionally dominant when the right player picks it up. In most tier lists it sits squarely below the VK-47 Flatline (which does similar work with far less patience required) and above weapons that embarrass themselves at every range. Respectable company, if not glamorous.
Tier Position. A-tier for skilled players. B-tier for everyone else. That is not an insult: that is an honest performance curve. all other can go Apex account service.
Primary Rival: VK-47 Flatline: full-auto, heavy ammo, forgiving recoil. The Flatline is what the Hemlok would be if it had fewer principles.
Season Updates: Hip-fire accuracy has been buffed in past patches. Boosted Loader hop-up compatibility has varied by season. Always verify current patch notes before building around a hop-up.
Tournament Presence" Seen in competitive play when players invest the time to master burst discipline. Consistent enough to be trusted in organized matches, which is more than most weapons can claim.
Skill Requirement: Higher than average. Below sniper rifles. The gap between floor and ceiling is where the Hemlok earns its reputation as a weapon that rewards investment.

Yes, at medium-to-long range. No, up close. Exceptional in the right hands, punishing in the wrong ones.
Burst for medium range, single-fire for long distance. Switch modes based on engagement distance, not panic.
A Barrel Stabilizer, without question. Grab it first, above magazine, stock, and every optic in the zip.
Any fast close-range weapon: R-99, EVA-8, or Wingman. The Hemlok handles range; your secondary handles everything else.
Fire one burst, pause for recoil recovery, then fire again. Rushing it widens spread and guarantees missed shots.
