Venomous Abyss Heroic Boss Guide: Midnight Season 2 PTR

Welcome to the Venomous Abyss raid guide nobody asked Blizzard to test in public. Buried in the Temple of Ula'tek, on the newly discovered Coiled Isle east of Zul'Aman, this eight-boss raid is the entire progression race for the season, because Blizzard decided one raid is plenty of content for you this year. Seven bosses have public encounter journal entries on PTR right now, ability IDs and all. The eighth, Ula'tek herself, stays locked, because Blizzard's idea of suspense is withholding content from the people stress-testing their game for free. Every ability tag below (role, criticality, difficulty) is copied from the actual journal UI, not vibes.

1. Nek'zali the Soulcoiler

The Nek'zali the Soulcoiler heroic guide starts, appropriately, with a corpse pile. Nek'zali haunts the Soulcoil Well, and her entire personality is "feed my well and die." Everything below is pulled from her live encounter journal.

Tank

  • Eat Sever stacks, swap before Hollowed piles up too high.
  • Stand away from raid for Possession Barrage; echoes weaken over distance.

DPS

  • Burn Gravebound Advance shields off Raised Amani before they reach the well.
  • Kill Echoes of Jawae fast during the intermission to end it.

Healer

  • Plan cooldowns around Soulcoil Rite stacking raid damage.
  • Watch for Hollowed eating your healing output on whoever's tanking.

Stage One: Soulcoiler Initiation

Ability

Role

Tags

Effect

Soulcoil Rite

All

Important

Every soul the well eats grants Nek'zali 5 energy and blasts the raid for 76,972 + 19,243/1.5s (12s, stacks). Heroic adds Ritual Burn, a stacking +10% damage-taken debuff. This is the energy meter you're racing.

Soulcoil Well

All

Deadly

Standing in it ticks 15/sec Shadow. Touch the surface or die inside and you become Soulcoiled: instant death.

Soulcoil Ignition

Healer

Important

Triggers Soulcoil Rite every 1s for 4s and spawns Anguished Echoes, random-location knockback bombs. A burst healing check.

Essence Rend

All

Magic

Pulls several players in for 5s, then knocks them away for 30 dmg. Leaves a ghostly essence (5/1.5s for 15s); removing it spawns a Latent Cultist.

Latent Cultist

DPS

Adds that pulse 40 dmg/sec and 40% slow to anyone standing near the well. Kill or avoid.

Restless Amani → Raised Amani

DPS

Spirits burst from the well, run for outer sarcophagi, and animate. This is the add wave.

Gravebound Advance

DPS

Magic

Shields Raised Amani for 25% max HP, grants death immunity and a hard fixate on the well while it holds. Burn it down, don't just CC it.

Corpse Blight

DPS

Killing an Amani too close to the well erupts for 61,577 (15yd) plus 6/sec for 6s. Don't stack kills on the well's lip.

Possession Barrage

Tank

Heroic+

Echoes launch toward the tank's target, hitting the raid for 461,829 (reduced by travel distance). Heroic: each echo that connects also stacks Hollowed.

Sever

Tank

Melee autoattack applies Hollowed: 30,789/3s and -5% healing/absorbs received per stack, 15s duration. Swap tanks before it snowballs.

Residual Toll

All

Background pressure: random players tick 3/sec, becoming Hollowed after 16 seconds if ignored.

Soul Transfer

All

Important

Summoner Jawae channels 15s into an Echo of Jawae, then detonates for 80 raid damage.

Echo of Jawae

DPS

Important

Protects Nek'zali via Tether of Awakening; kill every echo to sever the tethers and pull her back into the fight.

Hungering Pyre

All

Heroic+

On death, an echo erupts for 1,539,430 shared among players within 10yd; flames chase stragglers. Heroic adds Cremation, a follow-up 92,366 + 23,091/0.5s (3s) explosion.

Grasping Depths

All

Mythic only

The well pulls players into the Immortal Coil (7,697/sec) until a Drowned Echo add is killed. Not present on Heroic: enjoy it while it's not your problem.

Stage Two: Uncoiling (100 energy)

Ability

Role

Tags

Effect

Uncoiled Rage

All

Enrage

+150% attack/movement speed, +500% damage, full taunt immunity. This is the wipe you get for feeding the well too much. Don't reach it.

Invoke

All

Re-triggers Soulcoil Rite and spawns Latent Cultists doing a repositioning dance (Entwined Step). Mythic version also interrupts casts and silences whoever dared interrupt it.

Class-wise, this fight rewards anything with spread cleave or hard CC: boomkins, elemental shamans, affliction locks, and any death knight who's ever dreamed of Death Grip-ing an entire graveyard into one pile.

2. Entombed Sentinels

The Entombed Sentinels heroic strategy is one rule Blizzard was very proud of: keep Breath of Ula'tek and Blood of Ula'tek apart. Get them within 25 yards and both gain Ula'tek's Dominance, a 99% damage reduction that turns your parse into a cruel joke.

Tank

  • Tank the two golems 25+ yards apart, always.
  • Watch Toxic Droplets facing and rotating aggro from Empowering Slam / Bloodvenom Injection.

DPS

  • Kill Venom Coagulation slimes fast, they pulse Contaminate the longer they live.
  • Track Helical Toxins stacks: merge with a partner to reach exactly 4 and neutralize it.

Healer

  • Dispel Blighted Blood before it becomes Blood Venom on the ground.
  • Heal through Contaminate when the slime finally dies (it doesn't go quietly).

Ability

Source

Role

Effect

Living Venom

Breath

All

Heroic+

Ejected venom slime fires back at its source after 4s, hitting anyone struck for 45 Nature.

Toxic Droplets

Breath

All

Sprayed in front of Breath; step on them for 35 dmg or let them erupt into Noxious Blast (423,343 raid-wide) after 12s.

Empowering Slam

Breath

Tank

1,539,430 physical hit; each repeated slam on the same tank grants +15% physical damage until it slams someone else. Rotate.

Venom Coagulation

Breath

DPS

Vomits up a living slime that pulses Contaminate (92,366/2s raid-wide) until destroyed. Priority kill.

Blood Venom

Blood

All

Heroic+

On expiration, leaves a toxic pool (20/sec). Bigger applications mean bigger puddles.

Blighted Blood

Blood

Healer

Magic

Infects a player, 100,063/sec for 18s. Dispel it before it becomes a floor hazard.

Bloodvenom Injection

Blood

Tank

1,539,430 upfront physical plus 5/sec for 40s, stacking. Same rotate-tanks logic as Empowering Slam.

Unstable Miasma

Blood

All

Marks a player; after 8s it erupts for 500 Shadow split among anyone within 5yd. Spread out when marked.

Ula'tek's Dominance

Both

All

Important

Within 25 yards of each other, both golems take 99% less damage. Keep them separated, full stop.

Mark of Acid / Mark of Blood

Both

All

40-yard stacking auras applied every 6s. Standing in both at once is the real problem, not either alone.

Vitriolic Stasis

Both, at 100 energy

All

Important

Golems rush together, take 99% less damage, and the weaker one heals up to match the stronger. There's an achievement for punishing this cast.

Helical Toxins

Stasis follow-up

All

Infects everyone with an entangled venom (2/sec, 28s). Colliding with another victim combines strength; reach exactly 4 stacks to neutralize it harmlessly. Miss that window and it detonates via Cultivated Burst.

3. Vashnik the Malignant

The Vashnik the Malignant heroic guide is a guide to babysitting three fountains in the Chamber of Virulence: shadow, blood, and fire. He Imbibes from the two nearest ones, and whichever pair he picks decides your next minute of suffering.

Tank

  • Eat Dripping Fangs stacks, maneuver Vashnik between Imbibe casts to control which fountains get hit.

DPS

  • Kill Clotting Venom / Shrouded Venom / Burning Venom adds fast; blood ones are CC-immune until dead.
  • Spread for Plague Froth so Plague Waves don't chain through the stack.

Healer

  • Track Adaptive Infection: the active infusion (blood/fire/shadow) changes what you're healing through.
  • Dripping Fangs is a heavy stacking DoT on the tank; plan externals.

Ability

Role

Tags

Effect

Imbibe

All

Important

Vashnik draws from the two nearest fountains, erupting living venom forward and gaining a stack of Toxic Vapor. Mythic also pulls Malignant Tumors into the mix.

Malignant Burst

All

Deadly

If a fountain's venom reaches the Malignant Cavity: 153,943 raid-wide plus 230,915/3s for 30s. Kill the adds before they walk home.

Malignant Catalyst

All

Heroic+

Vashnik congeals venom above the Cavity and splashes it out for 538,801 raid-wide, launching Catalytic Bile that hits for 177,034 if it tags a player (or a token 40 to everyone if it whiffs).

Plague Froth

All

Coats a target for 20/sec (4s). On expiry, Plague Waves erupt in cardinal directions for 615,772 to anyone hit. Spread, don't hug.

Dripping Fangs

Tank

1,539,430 physical bite plus 22/2s, and +100% physical damage taken for 32s. Heavy tank cooldown trigger.

Adaptive Infection

Healer

Infects based on active fountain: Siphoning Infection (blood, absorbs healing + siphons nearby allies), Exploding Infection (fire, detonates on expiry for 615,772), or Stygian Infection (shadow, ground bursts underfoot).

Blood Fountain: Hemo Expulsion

All

146,246 raid-wide, spawns Clotting Venom. Immune to CC (Sanginous Fortitude) until dead, then splits into smaller clots on death.

Shadow Fountain: Gloom Expulsion

All

146,246 raid-wide, spawns Shrouded Venom that bursts on death firing missiles for 230,915 within 3yd.

Fire Fountain: Conflagrating Expulsion

All

146,246 raid-wide, spawns Burning Venom that explodes on death for 92,366 plus a burn tick, and pulses 38,486/3s while alive.

4. The Lost Explorers

The The Lost Explorers heroic guide covers a genuine council: possessed tortollans Scrollsage Iku, First Mate Nama, and Trader Gebbo, all puppeted by the troll Mor'zahi. Break his control and he re-asserts it violently. Let him sit free too long and he ascends.

Tank

  • Watch Shredding Shards (Iku) and Steady Strikes (Nama) stacking on you; swap as needed.
  • Position so Aura of Unity can't stack all three explorers' 99% reduction together.

DPS

  • Frostfire Volley: fire and frost patches cancel each other, use that.
  • Feed a Disgusting Fish to a controlled tortollan to break Mor'zahi's concentration.

Healer

  • Blink Nova and Icebound Flames are big single-target spikes, be ready.
  • Elemental Explosion punishes bad frost/fire overlap raid-wide.

Ability

Source

Role

Effect

Dark Whispers / Binding Anguish

Mor'zahi

All

Mor'zahi controls a tortollan; if control breaks, he dumps all his energy into re-taking it, granting the victim extra abilities in the process.

Empower / Empowered Ascension

Mor'zahi

All

Deadly

The longer he's free, the more power he gathers. Full charge unleashes 384,858/0.5s raid-wide. Feed the fish before this finishes.

Malevolent Presence

Mor'zahi

All

Passive raid-wide pressure, 76,973/2s, just for having him in the room.

Blink Nova

Scrollsage Iku

Healer

923,658 Arcane to the primary target, reduced by distance for everyone else. Don't hug the caster.

Icebound Flames

Scrollsage Iku

Healer

Interruptible / Magic

538,801 plus 153,943/sec for 12s and a 50% slow if not interrupted. Kick it.

Frostfire Volley

Scrollsage Iku

DPS

Fire missiles (538,801) leave Fire Patches, frost missiles leave Frost Patches; opposite elements cancel each other's patches out.

Elemental Explosion

Scrollsage Iku

All

Deadly

692,744 raid-wide plus 153,943/sec (5s) when Frost and Fire effects collide. This is why the patches matter.

Cataclysmic Invocation

Scrollsage Iku

All

Important

Whenever an ally dies, she detonates for 615,772 raid-wide, scaling up with every subsequent death. Kill order matters.

Shell Spin

First Mate Nama

All

Three spinning shells in a frontal cone, each stunning for 4s on contact.

Mighty Thud

First Mate Nama

DPS

Marks three players and leaps to each in order; miss the leap and it hits everyone for massive damage instead.

Aura of Unity

First Mate Nama

All

Important

When Iku and Gebbo are both near Nama, all three get 99% reduced incoming damage. Keep them apart.

Steady Strikes

First Mate Nama

Tank

+4% physical damage on the tank per attack for 1 minute. Rotate before it gets silly.

Relentless Escalation

First Mate Nama

All

Deadly

When an ally dies, Nama gains +100% damage every second for 99 seconds. Same kill-order lesson as Iku.

Throw Junk / Splinters

Trader Gebbo

All

Boxes fly, hit for 120 on impact. Stomping one open bleeds you for 38,487/sec (30s, stacks) via Splinters: that's the fish hunt.

Disgusting Fish

Trader Gebbo's box

All

Important

Feed it to whichever tortollan Mor'zahi is controlling to break his concentration. This is the actual objective of the box hunt.

Mushroom Toss / Fungal Burst

Trader Gebbo

All

Deadly

Bouncy mushrooms launch anyone who touches them airborne; the mushroom then bursts for 384,858 nearby.

Explosive Surprise / Concussive Blast

Trader Gebbo

All

A bomb lands on a player, knocks back on impact, then a follow-up Blast Wave hits for 6,927,437 plus lingering fire. Get clear.

Smashing Shovel

Trader Gebbo

Tank

Deadly

When an ally dies, Gebbo switches to melee-with-a-shovel mode: extra physical damage and knockback on every swing.

The achievement for this fight is literally called "Accidental Inclusion," for finishing with Hoji still alive, which tells you everything about how seriously Blizzard takes its own council fight.

5. Sszorak

Boss five, and the Sszorak heroic strategy is refreshingly single-target: a wind-born horror on the Altar of the Six Winds whose entire job is shoving you off a platform while hitting like a truck.

Tank

  • Face Sszorak away from raid for Mutilate and Ravage cleaves.
  • Manage Corroding Venom stacks: it's a slow-building armor shred.

DPS

  • Pop Viscous Cysts from Venomous Surge somewhere safe, not into the melee stack.
  • During Howling Maelstrom, Sszorak digs in and takes +30% damage: that's your burn window.

Healer

  • Ula'tek's Presence is constant raid-wide chip damage; plan for attrition, not just spike damage.
  • Tempest slows and DoTs stack fast during Apex Predator; spread heals accordingly.

Ability

Role

Tags

Effect

Apex Predator

All

Unleashes a combo of strikes: Ravage (420 frontal, +500% dmg taken from Ravage, stacking), Mutilate (2,694,003 frontal cone, split among targets), and Tempest (poison vortices, 60 + 25/sec, 30% slow, 6s).

Venomous Surge

All

7/0.5s for 10s on several players, then bursts for 60 on expiry and forms a Viscous Cyst that knocks everyone away and slows on contact. Drop these somewhere useless.

Raging Crosswinds

All

19,243/sec for 8s, then a 60-damage burst that blasts nearby players in the wind's direction and applies Turbulent Gusts (reduced fall speed until you bump another affected player).

Howling Maelstrom

All

Important

Gales sweep the altar, blowing players away while active. Sszorak digs in (immune to forced movement, +30% damage taken for 25s): your DPS window.

Corroding Venom

Tank

Every melee hit stacks +3% physical damage taken on the tank for 12s. Manage cooldowns as it climbs.

Ula'tek's Presence

Healer

Passive caustic mist, 84,669 raid-wide every 2 seconds. Constant chip damage, not a spike.

Serpent's Fury → Unbound Ferocity

All

Mythic only

Marks a target, builds rage; at 100 rage he gains +500% damage and +50% attack speed. Not on the Heroic testing menu: yet.

The jumping-ring mechanic is tracked by its own achievement ("Jumping Through Hoops"), because someone at Blizzard really wanted you leaping through hoops on purpose.

6. The Twin Fangs

Vexhul and Ithraz present the The Twin Fangs heroic guide as the raid's second cleave-a-duo slot. Both build Eternal Venom on the raid; hit 7 stacks and you're instantly dead.

Tank

  • Position for Stone Breaker slams: if nobody's in range, the platform itself hits everyone instead.
  • Watch Fractured stacks climbing on you.

DPS

  • Pop Caustic Globules deliberately, not into the raid.
  • Feed Ravenous Feast in the right slime order for the Twin Fangs' bonus achievement.

Healer

  • Track everyone's Eternal Venom stacks like a hawk: 7 stacks is a death, not a heal check.
  • Toxic Fumes is constant ambient chip damage on top of everything else.

Ability

Source

Role

Effect

Eternal Venom

Both

All

Important

13,470/sec, stacking. 7 stacks = instant death. Mythic: dying under it spawns extra Caustic Globules.

Caustic Deluge

Vexhul

Tank

230,915/0.5s on the tank for 5s, ejecting globs that apply Eternal Venom and hit for 384,858 within 4yd, then coalesce into a Caustic Globule.

Venomous Emergence

Vexhul

All

Summons Spawn of Vexhul adds and applies Eternal Venom raid-wide. Adds spit Corrosive Spit at random players.

Stir the Depths

Vexhul

All

96,214/2s for 6s plus traveling waves that hit for 50 on impact and apply Eternal Venom to anyone caught.

Vile Flood

Vexhul, 100 energy

All

Deadly

14-second gout of venom, 50/0.5s, applying Eternal Venom on every tick struck.

Ravenous Feast

Ithraz

All

Important

Three quick consumption attempts, 100 physical split among players within 14yd, consuming 1 Eternal Venom stack per hit. Heroic+: consumed venom mixes into a Bloodcurdled Mass add.

Stone Breaker

Ithraz

Tank

Roars back, then slams repeatedly for 1,539,430 within 3.5yd, applying Fractured (+33% damage taken from this ability, stacking). If nobody's hit, the platform itself reverberates for 40 raid-wide instead: always have a tank in range.

Sanguine Storm

Ithraz

All

Continuous gore fountain, 461,829 per impact within 4yd; Heroic version leaves Congealed Gore pools that slow 60% and tick damage.

Coiling Ichor

Ithraz

All

Infuses several players for 12s, tightening area and rising damage over time, then leaves Congealed Gore on expiry.

Submerge

Both, transition

All

At roughly 66% (percentage-gated), both snakes dive, showering the area for 461,829 within 6yd and leaving a slowing Noxious Slick.

Toxic Fumes

Both

Healer

Ambient 12 dmg every 2s to everyone, all fight. Death by a thousand cuts.

Uncoiled Wrath

Survivor

DPS

When one snake dies, the survivor gains +25% damage every 4 seconds, stacking. Kill order and burn planning matter here.

7. The Coiled Altar

The The Coiled Altar heroic guide covers the raid's grand finale before the finale: Zul'jan, wielding the Fang of Ula'tek, with Hex Lord Malacrass riding along for phase two. Fair warning: Zul'jan's own kit is fully indexed in the PTR encounter journal right now. Malacrass's phase-two/three kit isn't populated in the public journal yet, so his section below stays honest about what's confirmed by name versus fully documented.

Tank

  • Intercept Ritual of the Fang beams, or the whole raid eats the damage instead.
  • Eat Chop Down hits, standard tank-swap logic.

DPS

  • Dodge Axegrinder's ricocheting spinning axes; they don't care about your DPS uptime.
  • Break Zul'jan's own defenses fast: Bloodletting clears Ritual Venom stacks, so physical uptime matters.

Healer

  • Boneslicer hits everyone in the axe's flight path: treat it like a moving frontal.
  • Phase 3 combines everything: budget cooldowns for the full kit at once, not piecemeal.

Phase 1: Zul'jan (fully documented)

Ability

Role

Tags

Effect

Ritual of the Fang

All

Zul'jan channels snake-head beams into himself for 10s, gaining Fang Empowered (8 raid-wide per second, stacking) unless players intercept the beams, which reduces it to a flat 4/sec instead.

Bloodletting

All

Important

His physical hits cause hemorrhaging, stripping Ritual Venom stacks and leaving 11/sec blood pools on the ground. Mythic-only Ritual Venom itself bursts for 40 on expiry if left alone.

Boneslicer

All

Hurls an axe at a player; 18 to everyone caught in its flight path, plus 4/sec for 9s. Treat the flight line like a frontal.

Axegrinder

All

Spinning axes ricochet through the arena, eviscerating for 10/0.25s on contact. Keep moving, don't stand in the ricochet lanes.

Chop Down

Tank

Two hacks at the current tank, 50 physical each. Standard threat/mitigation, nothing exotic.

Phase 2 & 3: Hex Lord Malacrass (name-confirmed, kit not yet public)

Straight talk: Wowhead's PTR encounter journal for Hex Lord Malacrass isn't populated yet as of this writing: his NPC page exists but the ability list is empty. What's below is limited to mechanics confirmed by name through PTR achievement text and testing footage. No fabricated numbers, no invented spell IDs.

  • Unnerving Fixation: confirmed real via the achievement "Watch Out Behind You" (defeat the Coiled Altar while everyone is affected by it). In testing, the ghost stops moving while you look at it and closes in the moment you look away.
  • Gloom soaks: a group-soak mechanic seen in testing footage, functionally similar to standard raid soak checks. Exact numbers unconfirmed.
  • Charm / platform-edge pull: an effect that walks affected players toward the platform edge, breakable by shattering the caster's shield early. Exact spell name unconfirmed in the public journal.
  • Phase 3: combines Zul'jan's full kit above with Malacrass's ghost and soak mechanics simultaneously, plus a raid damage-amp finisher. This is the penultimate fight for a reason.

8. Ula'tek: Locked, As Promised

This entry exists only because leaving it out entirely felt like lying to you. Ula'tek is the ancient serpent goddess this entire WoW Midnight Season 2 raid tier is building toward. She is not available for Heroic or Mythic PTR testing, per Blizzard's long and cherished tradition of hiding the one fight everyone actually wants to see. You'll learn her the same way everyone else does: live, blind, and immediately dead.

Tier Tokens, By Boss

Five of the seven tested bosses hand out a class tier-set token for a fixed armor slot. Miss one boss, and the Midnight Catalyst becomes your only way back into that slot: assuming you enjoy grinding delves as a backup plan.

Venomous Abyss Heroic Boss Guide: Midnight Season 2 PTR FAQ

How many bosses are in the Venomous Abyss heroic raid?

Eight bosses total; this guide covers the seven tested on Heroic PTR, since Ula'tek stays locked until the raid launches.

What is the first boss in the Venomous Abyss?

Nek'zali the Soulcoiler opens the raid, guarding the Soulcoil Well with endless adds and an energy-based wipe mechanic.

Which Venomous Abyss bosses are multi-target council fights?

Entombed Sentinels, the Twin Fangs, and the Coiled Altar all field two or more targets, demanding careful positioning and priority.

Is Ula'tek testable on the current PTR build?

No. Blizzard locks the final boss during testing, so Ula'tek's mechanics stay journal-only speculation until the raid actually launches.

When does Venomous Abyss Mythic difficulty testing begin?

Mythic testing typically follows Heroic by about two weeks, matching Blizzard's usual PTR cadence for Midnight Season 2's raid tier.
